REVIEW: The Artist Who Loved Cats: The Inspiring Tale of Theophile Steinlen by Susan Schaefer Bernardo
The Artist Who Loved Cats: The Inspiring Tale of Theophile Alexandre Steinlen is a picture book biography of the artist who created the iconic Le Chat Noir cabaret posters. Steinlen moved to Paris in 1881 to pursue his creative dreams, ultimately creating more than 700 journal illustrations, famous posters, sculptures, cartoon strips, and paintings. Many of Steinlen’s artworks feature cats, his favorite subject. More than just a biography, The Artist Who Loved Cats is a celebration of art, inspiration, and following your heart to create a life that you love.
Dear Ms. Bernardo,
I adore all things cat – well, maybe not the litter box but most things cat. Of course when I saw this book cover, I knew that I needed to check it out.
(Subtitles ON: It’s adorable. It’s charming. It’s filled with cats. I adore it. My cats adore it too. I enjoyed looking for the little cats on each page. I especially loved the cats dancing the can-can. The black cat who narrates it is fantastic. I must go and read it again.)
Purrs, Jayne

This looks like a truly enjoyable book, Jayne. And I was happy to see note that my long ago high school French still allowed me to read your French praise.
@Kareni: My very, very long ago high school French got me started then G**gle translate took over. Finally, a friend who is fluent in French double checked me and made one suggestion change. Merci, L. ☺
I knew the cat on the cover looked familiar. This is wonderful, thank you for posting. And also for the chance to dust off grade/high school French. Apparently I do remember some things.
@Darlynne: You’re welcome. It’s a darling book and has several of Steinlen’s other famous posters including the one with the borzoi – which I also love as I used to have several over the years.
