REVIEW: Unexpected: A Holiday Short (The Holiday Shorts) by DL White
Saidah’s Christmas memories have been warped by personal tragedy. A chance encounter brings her unexpected love and a new outlook on life.
Here’s to finding love where you least expect it!
Trigger warning:
Spoiler: Show
Dear Ms. White,
I actually found this novella when I began looking for Kwanzaa romances. Not being one to start with a sequel when I can avoid it, I decided to read the excerpt for “Unexpected” and after liking that, start there. This is a sweet novella that has some slightly darker elements to give it depth and avoid sugar overload.
Saidah had planned on staying home in her condo on her comfy couch with her Christmas tree socks on until her dearest college friend called and presented her with a chance to see if the One Who Got Away might turn out to be a second chance romance. Saidah quickly has her answer and it’s not what she was expecting.
I was enjoying myself so much, I zipped through this novella fairly quickly. Saidah and her friends Faith and Anthony are obviously friends of long standing and it shows. Faith knows exactly what will get Saidah over to her house for Christmas dinner and the two share opinions on how it turns out. I’m trying not to give away spoilers but I liked how Saidah was open to trying something new but still holding back just a little to be sure what she was getting.
She also begins to move forward and deal with something that has haunted her at this time of the year for too long. New traditions look like they’ll be made and I do love a man who loves his small, froo-froo dog and can cook. B

This does sound appealing, Jayne. And I’m a fortunate woman who is married to a man who can and does cook!
@Kareni: Excellent. You are a lucky woman. But does he like froo-froo dogs? ☺
That’s a no on the froo-froo dogs, Jayne; however, I’m happy to have a nice meal every day!
I’ll take a nice meal every day over a froo-froo dog any time of the year. But I am a foodie and not a dog person!
Me, too, @Janine. Me, too!
