I was looking for a holiday novella and saw this one. The season and the price were right so I bought it and got started. It is a sweet and spicy story about two people at a crossroads in their lives finding each other and deciding to see where their fling goes.
Stefan Sutherland is still getting the hang of looking after his young nephew when Jacob presents him with a grungy, injured cat. Off to the local vet office they go where Dr. Callie Webber stiches up Sandy (and Stefan knows he’s doomed to cat parenting after Jacob names her). Both Stefan and Callie are looking at possible major changes in their lives as Stefan’s vision damage might not heal enough for him to get back to his Naval career while Callie is thinking about joining a practice in Baton Rouge and leaving some heartache behind. But are the feelings they each have enough to bring them together?
First off, I love nephew Jacob. He is definitely not a plot moppet and he saves a cat! Go, Jacob. I did have to laugh at Stefan’s reaction when Sandy horks up a hairball. No, Sandy didn’t just cough up an organ but his reaction has given Callie something to twit Stefan about for years.
Although this is a novella and both heroine and hero have personal issues to work through, I feel satisfied with where they end up emotionally. In truth, they’ve been thinking about what choices they face even before the story starts and as it proceeds, Callie and Stefan keep thinking and talking with each other, you know – like adults. Solutions to Callie’s feeling that she needs to leave and Stefan not being able to continue flying are salted in rather than suddenly appearing at the end. I also like that the novella finishes with a HFN rather than HEA. B
