REVIEW: Fearless by Shira Glassman
A newly out-of-the-closet band mom falls for an orchestra teacher while snowed in at All-State. Lana Novak hasn’t played violin in over twenty years, her musical life these days confined to being a devoted band mom to her clarinet whiz daughter Robin. She didn’t think she could get back into it after this long, but Melanie Feinberg, the outgoing, enthusiastic, and very cute butch orchestra director from Robin’s school, has other ideas.
Dear Ms. Glassman,
Having never tried one of your short stories, I picked this one more or less at random. It’s light, sweet (no sex, just one kiss at the end), and loaded with band stuff. No, that’s not D/s. It’s an All-State Band concert at which the MCs along with a ton of high school musicians get snowed in at a hotel. Me I wanted more of the newly out, slightly older mother who is unsure of herself and still getting the hang of being divorced and trying to meet fellow lesbians. Lana is nice, a great mom (and not only to her own daughter) and thrilled that all around amazing Mel (who is like a pied piper for her students) seems interested in her. Before we know it, they’re exchanging winks, cups of hot cider, and getting Lana to try her hand at playing a tune on an instrument (a violin only) she hasn’t touched in years. It’s all gentle and kind but there’s no conflict here at all. Everything progresses with no issues and there is way more music stuff than I wanted. But then I wasn’t a band nerd. C+
