Do you have to read the books in this series in order? I’m sort of intrigued by this one but have never read any of the books in this series before.
@Layla. They don’t need to be read in order. The authors are pretty good at bringing new readers up to speed without info dumping. But there are a lot of recurring characters and you miss some of their background.
And just FYI, IA has a gallery on the book’s page that shows all the original spouse portraits that ran with the serial but are not included in the book. I always follow the serials, and this was a fun one, with reader polls on who stays and who goes, and who’s the villain?
@Layla: I would say yes if you want the backstory on the main characters and as Sandra said some recurring characters are a great deal of fun.@Sandra: I loved the illustrations in the book, but did not see the ones on the site.
I enjoyed the serial more than the finished book. The illustrations were brilliant and I liked the political slant but the chapter blurb/transitions were clunky. They’re so good at dialogue and the conversation between characters was my favorite part of the book. My child read this over Christmas and every request ended with “we discuss?” which still makes me laugh out loud. Also the stuff with Gaston was gold, adding him to the mix was brilliant.

Honestly, I zoned out and stopped reading it when it was going up online. I felt bad about it, but now after reading this review, it wasn’t just me, then? TOO MANY CANDIDATES to keep track of, by far, too many people to not care too much about.
@Jennifer: No, not just you, as I mentioned I have had the parts of the book I enjoyed but this sentiment we definitely share.
