Review:
Dear Sapphire Wolf,
I really liked the first two books in these series and I could not wait to read this one when it was originally announced last year. Alas, it was delayed and it was only recently published. Did I like to wait? NO, but this book made the wait worthwhile for me.
I would not recommend readers starting with this one, because there is already a lot of back story and relationship development between some of the characters, even if this specific police procedural is a new one, there were some references to some events in the books one and two.
But more importantly Kat Kale and the hybrid squad she works in and especially her sergeant – the banter between them, the deepening friendship no matter how Kat liked to deny it – I enjoyed it very much. I love me some good solid urban fantasy, always did, but when vividly drawn characters participate in interesting adventures, I am here for it and this book was a good example of it.
I realized it is also a good, interesting police procedural, more than a pure mystery. Here as the blurb tells you, Kate and her team are trying to figure out why a human killer went on a killing spree and what was the initial trigger. That was supposed to help them find him and catch him and it did eventually do that. For a little while I was wondering whether someone else would end up being the killer than the original suspect, but no, he ended up being the one. The investigation mostly was trying to figure out Why? and not Who? and I ended up liking that.
Even the plot which was centered around Kat’s continued troubles with the rogue wolves was not a mystery, but a police procedural/ suspense/ adventure after Kat rather quickly figured out who was behind it. Then they were focused on finding the criminals behind that plot and save the kidnapping victims.
As I mentioned before as much as I liked the fast paced parts of the story, I enjoyed the human interactions most of all. Yes, yes I still have hopes for Kat and Anhelm. I can dream no matter how delusional my dreams may end being, no?
Grade: B+ only because it is an ongoing series and I will happily grade it even higher when the series is complete and the ending satisfies me :).
