Review: Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly
From the author of Love & Other Disasters comes a sparkling grumpy-meets-sunshine romance featuring two men’s sweeping journey across the Western wilderness.
Alexei Lebedev’s journey on the Pacific Crest Trail begins with a single snake. And it is angling for the hot stranger who seemed to have appeared out of thin air. Lex is prepared for rattlesnakes, blisters, and months of solitude. What he isn’t prepared for is Ben Caravalho. But somehow—on a 2,500-mile trail—Alexei keeps running into the outgoing and charismatic hiker with golden-brown eyes, again and again. It might be coincidence. Then again, maybe there’s a reason the trail keeps bringing them together . . .
Ben has made his fair share of bad decisions, and almost all of them involved beautiful men. And yet there’s something about the gorgeous and quietly nerdy Alexei that Ben can’t just walk away from. Surely a bad decision can’t be this cute and smart. And there are worse things than falling in love during the biggest adventure of your life. But when their plans for the future are turned upside down, Ben and Alexei begin to wonder if it’s possible to hold on to something this wild and wonderful.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about this book, Sirius; thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Oh thanks Kareni I bought it full price so imo it is a good deal
Kelly self-published (I think) “Moonlighters,” a series of 3 novellas that take place at a queer karaoke bar. I read and liked #2, “Our Favorite Songs.” She’s definitely an author to watch for.
I listened to this one on audio. I gave it a B overall too.
I love SOMETHING WILD & WONDERFUL and have put it on my favorites of 2023 list. Like you, I was unfamiliar with the writer when I purchased the book on sale a few days ago. I started it, was immediately caught up in the story, pulled a bad decisions book club, and ended up finishing it less than 24 hours after I bought it. I loved how Alexei and Ben gradually grow in their feelings toward each other and how beautifully Kelly describes the natural beauty (and dangers) of the Pacific Crest Trail. But probably the thing I appreciated more than everything else was how Kelly did not end the book where so many other authors might have: at the point where Alexei meets Ben’s large, loving, and welcoming family & friend group, and he (Alexei) feels loved and accepted for who he is for the first time. But Alexei realizes he still hasn’t finished his journey of self-discovery and reinvention, and the story continues. I think a lesser author might have basically said, this is the HEA. But Alexei—and, to some extent, Ben—have some more growing to do. I loved everything about SW&W. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed Something Wild and Wonderful. Even more than the first book in the series, Love and Other Disasters, which was also good (f/nb romance set in a cooking competition). Both MCs of book 1 show up in SWaW, as friends of Ben in Nashville.
Anita Kelly (they/them) is definitely an author to watch. I’m looking forward to book three of this series – I think I saw on their website that it will be f/f and set in Nashville.
@DiscoDollyDeb: I enjoyed the book too and if it ends up being memorable, who knows maybe it will end up on my list, but not as of now. It is interesting, re: ending . I did not feel that the story should have ended during the meeting with the family either BUT I was ready for Alexey’s journey of self discovery to continue without such an obvious metaphor in other words by that point in the story I have had more than enough of hiking :).@cleo: @Kaetrin: Glad the book worked for you both.
