Bravo. Well done. I didn’t care that I figured out who the murderer was before poor Abbot Listrum finally learns the truth behind why the unloved Brother Gorm became the face-flat and dead Brother Gorm after yelling “You bastard!” during the plunge.
Miss Gentle is a one of a kind mystery solver with her own peculiar way of figuring things out. But Radish was correct in telling Abbot Listrum that she was going to solve it. After the whole worry about his monks lying to him and the threat of the grim Bishop appearing with penitence in mind for the Brothers, the Abbot can be excused for fretting.
Miss Gentle showed no such reservation and stomped over to it in an echoing series of clanks.
“Dropped a long way, did he?” she observed, leaning over the corpse with a tortured groan of metal. “Front’s all flat, isn’t it?”
The journey to the end was delightful and the reasoning behind Miss Gentle’s payment makes absolute sense – grim as what she demands is. I will definitely read this one again. A
