Dear Author Recommends for January 2013
It is a slow start to the new year for the DA reviewers. Hopefully this doesn’t mean the entire year is going to be bare of great books.
- The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand, recommended by Sunita. Review to come.
- Unforgivable by Joanna Chambers, recommended by Jennie. Review to come on Jan 15 (the release date).
- When Chocolate is Not Enough by Nina Harrington (reviewed and recommended by Jayne).
Are we not reading the right books and therefore missing awesome ones? Let us know in the comments.
I haven’t been wowed by many of the books I’ve read lately either, so I wouldn’t know if you’re missing anything.
I don’t know much about the publishing world. Do they jump bad books in January the same way movie studios dump bad movies there? Could that be it?
I just read and loved Vanity Fare by Megan Caldwell.
I recommend it!
I have had the same proble so far this month. Out of 7 books read, 5 have been meh. The crime novel I am currently reading is full of infodumps. *facepalm* Hopefully it’ll get better soon…
I’d like to recommend Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. This is a really intense teen romance with a lot of heavy issues. Newly released and very good.
I liked the latest Sarah Mayberry, The Other side of Us. I always like her characters. Also, not sure if it is a January release, but I bought the Boomerang Bride by Fiona Lowe because I liked the picture in your side bar, and it was a fun read for me, being Australian.
Sorry, the side bar was on SBTB. Still a fun read though !
Just saw a review for a book called The Duke of Shadows, a debut book by an author Meredith Duran. Apparently, this reviewer doesn’t give five stars, ever, until now. The book sounded very interesting. C. Vowel is the same reviewer that you mentioned in your other post regarding the book And the Bride Wore Plaid. I searched the DA site for this new book, but didn’t find it … maybe its good??
One more thing – I’m probably WAY late to the party as this ‘debut’ book came out in 2008, lol. Oh well, I tried!
@Kit: I highly recommend Meredith Duran. She’s a fantastic writer.
@Jane, you wrote: The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand, recommended by Sunita. Review to come.
Sunita reviewed the book in the fall. I read it on her recommendation here.
@Keira Soleore: I take that back. Sunita recommended “The Chocolate Thief,” which I read. Looking forward to reading her review of “The Chocolate Kiss.”
@Elizabeth: I reviewed Boomerang Bride last year here at DA when Carina published it as an ebook. I believe this month’s release is in trade paperback (and it’s still available as an ebook). I enjoyed it very much.
@Kit: There are two reviews of Duke of Shadows at DA, one by Robin/Janet and one by Jan.
@Keira Soleore: I liked it very much and the review is forthcoming quite soon.
ETA: Jane reviewed Duke of Shadows as well.
@Sunita thanks so much for your earlier review of Chocolate Thief! Being the cheapo that i am, the review plus excerpt (plus high price of the ebook) made me try out Interlink, that program where libraries loan to each other. CT was delightful, and I was really won over by her memoir Blame It On Paris. ( If you are ch.. Ok frugal like me, she has a lovely novella out that was a DA deal) Chocolate Kiss is smart and romantic and makes me glad it’s part of a (loosely connected, easily read as stand alone) trilogy, because it means hooray! More! I love that her heroes are sexy but do not derive their appeal from man ho-liness and are not afraid to fall deeply in love with the heroine. I also love that the journey involves H strengthening her own core or identity, in order to be able to fall in love. Plus Hooray forbher strong witch aunties (and the way families assert there presence in h and H’s lives) plus Florand writes food AND sex in a very decadent, knee melting way – ok so 4 wins out of 4 reads means autobuy status. Thanks again for the heads up
