Open Thread for Readers for May 2020
Got a book you want to talk about? Frustrated with a book or series? In love with a new one? Found a buried treasure? An issue that keeps popping up in the books you are reading? Just want to chat about stuff in general?
I often thought that content warnings, in addition to a book review or synopsis, were unnecessary because the information was in or could be reasonably assumed from the review. Then I read Constable on the HIll. Phew. Talk about rage. Dog beating, casual dismissal of the fate of a hungry stray dog, I’ve read a couple of dozen books since and I’m still simmering about this one.
@LML: Thank you for mentioning that. I had seen these books and had heard them talked up. And then there’s the description attached to the title – “a perfect feel-good read …” I’d say NOT. What you describe would be the kind of thing to stick with me for a long time.
Same here, LML and Jayne.
If you are looking for a feel-good mystery, LML (Jayne has already read it), I recommend The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair. It’s about two very different women who open a marriage bureau in London in 1946. When one of their clients is accused of murdering another of their clients, they decide to investigate. The mystery is fun but the best part of the book is the friendship between the two women.
@LML: I recently read The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and it really helped soothe me for a few hours during this pandemic. I have been very angry.
In the book here is the most marvellous wedding ceremony. It really perked me up!
“there”
@mel burns: I have that in my TBR pile! I’ll move it up.
Ok—I’m in full, unapologetic, braggy fan-girl-squee mode right now. Kati Wilde’s long-awaited LOSING IT ALL was finally released yesterday. So, as soon as I woke up yesterday morning, I immediately downloaded it—and when I got to the dedication page, I saw that Kati had dedicated the book to me!! I was both shocked and thrilled. To say that Kati made my day is putting it mildly. A banner day—and I got to read a new Hellfire Riders MC romance (which is very good, but quite dark and includes a content warning from Kati at the beginning).
@DiscoDollyDeb: That is SO fabulous, DiscoDollyDeb!! How incredible to have this dedicated to you! And I agree, Losing It All blew me away!
I don’t know where else to post this, but Elizabeth Cadell’s THE CORNER SHOP is .99 at Amazon US. Jayne reviewed it way back in 2017 and gave it an A- recommended read. Cadell’s books almost never go on sale, so for anyone interested, check out Jayne’s review.
@Darlynne: OMG – I’m in shock. You’re right, I’ve never seen her books on sale. Even a little.
