Spring 2010 Giveaway for Putnam and Riverhead

When I was in New York, I got an invitation to the Penguin offices and one of the great people I met was Lydia Hirt, publicist for Putnam and Riverhead. I stopped by her office to pick up an advanced copy of PJ Tracy’s Shoot to Thrill, a police procedure series based out of Minneapolis. Lydia and I got to talking about books and blogs and she noticed that we had done some giveaways in the past and wondered if the Dear Author readership would be interested in hearing about some of the Putnam and Riverhead titles.
I thought, why not? Romance readers read across genres and love to read good books. So without further ado, here is the following from Ms. Hirt:

BLOOD OATH by Christopher Farnsworth (Putnam, 5/18/10)
I was late hopping on the vampire bandwagon, and BLOOD OATH was my first paranormal read. It definitely set the standard high for the entire genre! Action-packed and exciting, featuring Nathaniel Cade, a vampire with feelings, this was a book I couldn't put down. A cross between the hit show "24' and the "Bourne" movies, this book features: The ultimate secret. The ultimate agent. The President's vampire.

Well, my choice would be the Cullen and Quick book. And my favourite childhood book? Anything by Enid Blyton. I read her complete Famous Five series about five or six times by the age of 12 :-)
My Wife’s Affair caught my eye a few weeks ago. I think the cover is lovely.
Favorite childhood book will always be Alice in Wonderland.
Jayne Ann Krentz is a weakness of mine, and I’d love an ARC of The Burning Lamp. And My Name is Memory sounds fascinating.
How far back in childhood do you want as favorites? I remember reading anything I could get my hands on. Let’s say the Black Stallion books were at least some of my favorites. And in jr. high school (when they still called it that) I remember reading Night of Masks by Andre Norton over and over again.
I don’t know much about Putnam and Riverhead but they sure have interesting titles! Thanks for giving us the opportunity of discovering them. I especially like the blurbs of Creation of Eve and My Name is Memory – just my type of stories :).
And my favorite childhood book would probably be Heidi. It stuck in my impressionable mind and made me yearn to visit Swtzerland and see those beautiful mountains for myself :). I still re-read the series on a regular basis :).

My choice would be the Amanda Quick book. My childhood favorites were Nancy Drew for a long time, then Anne of Green Gables.
My two picks would have to be Amanda Quick(I do read her books) and Ann Brashares(looks promising).

I had to look up the author of my favorite girlhood book; Daddy Long Legs, it was Jean Webster. I’m still a sucker for stories about orphans who end up with rich men… sad to say but it still works for me.

I loved and read the whole series of stories. I couldn't get my daughter interested in the books, she said she didn't like the reruns on TV why read the books.

I didn’t read as a child. But I remember the summer I was 16, there was a Library By Mail program. Great for someone living in Rural Texas at the time. I started with The Flame and The Flower. Good thing my parents had no idea what I was reading.

The first childhood book that came to mind was The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I read it several times as a child.
Well, My Wife’s Affair is definitely my top choice. Next would be The Lost Summer of Louise May Alcott, because Little Women was one of my absolute favorite books as a child. That and The Secret Garden. I don’t even remember how many times I read them. The Creation of Eve also looks fascinating. I read Jane Eyre when I was nine (which means I have been in love with Rochester since forever), and since it remains to this day one of my favorite reads — I reread it at least once a year, haha — that’ll have to be top childhood read for me. :) So timeless!

Ah Trixie Beldon was my first introduction to the love of the mystery genre.
First choice would be Burning Lamp, second would be Blood Oath. I’m trying to imagine a cross between thrillers and vampires.
The other comments reminded me of childhood books I loved (my complete collection of Nancy Drew, Witch of Blackbird Pond, and Island of the Blue Dolphins) but my favorite childhood book of all time would be Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. Back when librarian’s checked books out by hand, the slip had my library card number, my number, my number, someone else’s number, my number, my number…ad infinitum. :) Close second would be A Ring of Endless Light by Madeline L’Engle. Made me want to be a marine biologist.

My favorite childhood book was The Farthest Away Mountian by Lynne Reid Banks, great adventure where the young woman has to be clever to work out how to save not just herself but the whole kingdom.
I 99.8% loved GIRL IN TRANSLATION and would highly recommend the winner to choose that one. (I can’t tell you about the 0.2% that disappointed me, because it would be a spoiler). It’s a wonderful coming of age story.
The Creation of Eve looks pretty interesting, too.

My favorite book as a child was the original novel of Bambi. I read it in 3rd grade twice and will never forget it. My favorite 1st romance was Jane Eyre.

One of my favourite childhood books are those from “Puck” series, by Danish writer Lisbeth Werner. I used to read these books hundreds of times throughout the summer holidays. They were around thirty-something books I think. I still keep the collection with utmost care.

“Girl in Translation” and “My Name is Memory” both sound amazing.
My favorite book as a child was “Johnny Tremaine.” The incredible bravery (foolhardy though it might have been at times) had touched some part of 10-year-old me. It also started my nearly lifelong love affair with Colonial American history.

Hard question because there were a lot of books I loved as a child. One of the ones that had the biggest impact on me was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which is probably why I’m drawn to Girl in Translation.

I’d be interested in Girl in Translation or My Wife’s Affair. I don’t really have a favourite childhood book – I loved too many – but if we restrict it to early childhood (before I knew how to read) my favourite book was Where is the Bear by Betty Hubka.
My first choice would be Blood Oath and my second would be Girl in Translation.
Favorite childhood book – there were so many, but my all time favorite was Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield. I was so excited to see this book (and all the other “Shoes” books) back in print a few years ago that I promptly bought one for my 13 yo niece. My other all time favorite was the horse book, Man-O-War, by Walter Farley (loved all the Black Stallion books too of course).
My favorite book as a kid was Little Women, so it will not surprise you that The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott tops my list. And the second title that particularly interests me is My Name Is Memory.

For anyone who hasn’t read the Monkeewrench series, I strongly recommend you go out and get “Monkeewrench” (the first in the series) and read it RIGHT NOW so you can read the new book when it comes out. And if you can squeeze in the time, read the other 3 in the series as well (though “Dead Run” is my next favorite to “Monkeewrench”).
LOVE IN TRANSLATION sounds absolutely amazing, and BLOOD OATH is interesting as well. You should consider doing more of these upcoming-books blurb collections, even sans giveaway.
