Spring 2010 Giveaway for Putnam and Riverhead
When I was in New York, I got an invitation to the Penguin offices and one of the great people I met was Lydia Hirt, publicist for Putnam and Riverhead. I stopped by her office to pick up an advanced copy of PJ Tracy’s Shoot to Thrill, a police procedure series based out of Minneapolis. Lydia and I got to talking about books and blogs and she noticed that we had done some giveaways in the past and wondered if the Dear Author readership would be interested in hearing about some of the Putnam and Riverhead titles.
I thought, why not? Romance readers read across genres and love to read good books. So without further ado, here is the following from Ms. Hirt:
Welcome to the forthcoming books giveaway from G.P. Putnam's Sons and Riverhead Books!
We're thrilled to be joining the Dear Author community and have the opportunity to connect with a new group of readers. Putnam and Riverhead publish a number of books across all genres, and have highlighted several titles that we believe you'll find compelling. We invite you to visit us on Facebook (Putnam and Riverhead) to keep track of other upcoming books and to let us know what you think – we'd love to hear your thoughts!
March 2010:
CREATION OF EVE by Lynn Cullen (Putnam 3/23/10):
Embark on a trip back to the Golden Age in Spain thanks to the talented hand of Lynn Cullen in THE CREATION OF EVE. This story deftly combines mystery, romance and history as one young painter becomes embroiled in a love triangle involving the Queen, the King, and the King's illegitimate half-brother, Don Juan. This novel asks the question: How well do you really know those closest to you? And can you ever truly know another person's heart?
"Intrigue, jealousy, misplaced love, escape and escapade–what could be more tantalizing?" -‘Susan Vreeland, author ofLuncheon of the Boating Party and Girl in Hyacinth Blue
April 2010:
THE LOST SUMMER OF LOUISA MAY ALCOTT by Kelly O'Connor McNees (Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam 4/1/10):
As a personal fan of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel LITTLE WOMEN, this is the book for which I have been waiting. Louisa taught us how to love through LITTLE WOMEN, but who taught her? Debut author Kelly O'Connor McNees deftly mixes fact and fiction as she imagines a love affair that would influence Louisa's writing career for the rest of her life – a wonderful story that explores how she so deftly portrayed young love and heartbreak, but did so at a cost none of us ever knew.
"A wonderfully imagined, lively novel of first love…" -‘Meg Waite Clayton, author of The Wednesday Sisters
BURNING LAMP by Amanda Quick (Putnam 4/20/10):
Don't miss this second novel in the Dreamlight Trilogy from New York Times-bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz, writing as Amanda Quick. The Arcane Society was born in turmoil, and now psychic power and passion collide as a legendary curse comes to a burn…
"Fast-paced and cleverly constructed, the tale perfectly balances lively adventure, passionate romance, and the paranormal against an elaborate and refreshingly original background. Arcane Society fans will be thrilled, and new readers will find this stand-alone story very accessible." – Publishers Weekly
MY WIFE'S AFFAIR by Nancy Woodruff (Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam 4/15/10):
Have you ever gotten something you wanted, but somehow, still wanted more? Georgie Connolly has. Narrated by her husband Peter, a failed-writer-turned-businessman, My Wife’s Affair is about infidelity, passion, duty, and about finally getting what you want and then wanting still more. Don't miss this smart, sexy novel about a woman's search for her former self on the London stage.
"-leaves not a dry eye in the house in this gripping ode to theater and the love it can command-‘and crush." –Publishers Weekly
GIRL IN TRANSLATION by Jean Kwok (Riverhead Books 4/29/10):
An unforgettable and classic novel of an American immigrant – a moving tale of hardship and triumph, heartbreak and love, and all that gets lost in translation. When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn squalor, she quickly begins a secret double life: exceptional schoolgirl by day, Chinatown sweatshop worker in the evenings. Between the two lives Kimberly leads are different boys and experiences, and she must make a decision.
"A moving coming of age story, reminiscent of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn-Kwok perfectly captures the voice and perspective of a young immigrant, and the result is a powerful work about love, sacrifice and faith." -‘Min Jin Lee, author of the bestselling Free Food for Millionaires
(Jane’s insertion: I’ve started reading this book. I love the cover).
May 2010
BLOOD OATH by Christopher Farnsworth (Putnam, 5/18/10)
I was late hopping on the vampire bandwagon, and BLOOD OATH was my first paranormal read. It definitely set the standard high for the entire genre! Action-packed and exciting, featuring Nathaniel Cade, a vampire with feelings, this was a book I couldn't put down. A cross between the hit show "24' and the "Bourne" movies, this book features: The ultimate secret. The ultimate agent. The President's vampire.
"Witty, exciting, and compulsively readable, with a central character who seems destined to become a favorite of both skeptics and true blood believers, Blood Oath may just be the best debut vampire novel in many years. " -‘John Connolly, author of The Lovers
Jane’s insertion: Have heard from a romance reader who has read this that she thinks romance readers would like it. Kind of campy and has slight romance in it.
June 2010
MY NAME IS MEMORY by Ann Brashares (Riverhead Books 6/1/10):
Sometimes love lasts more than a lifetime- Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia have been drawn together-‘and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory," the ability to recall past lives and recognize the souls of those he's previously known. For all the times that he and Sophia have been together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. Don't miss this magical new novel from the New York Times– bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Last Summer (of You and Me).
"Brashares's writing is natural, insightful, and affecting."-‘Entertainment Weekly
We have two ARCs or finished books available for each of the titles listed, as prizes for the giveaways. I'm always happy to talk books! If you need additional information or have any questions, please drop a note in the comment section and I will try to reply.

Well, my choice would be the Cullen and Quick book. And my favourite childhood book? Anything by Enid Blyton. I read her complete Famous Five series about five or six times by the age of 12 :-)
My Wife’s Affair caught my eye a few weeks ago. I think the cover is lovely.
Favorite childhood book will always be Alice in Wonderland.
Jayne Ann Krentz is a weakness of mine, and I’d love an ARC of The Burning Lamp. And My Name is Memory sounds fascinating.
How far back in childhood do you want as favorites? I remember reading anything I could get my hands on. Let’s say the Black Stallion books were at least some of my favorites. And in jr. high school (when they still called it that) I remember reading Night of Masks by Andre Norton over and over again.
I don’t know much about Putnam and Riverhead but they sure have interesting titles! Thanks for giving us the opportunity of discovering them. I especially like the blurbs of Creation of Eve and My Name is Memory – just my type of stories :).
And my favorite childhood book would probably be Heidi. It stuck in my impressionable mind and made me yearn to visit Swtzerland and see those beautiful mountains for myself :). I still re-read the series on a regular basis :).
1 – My Name is Memory
2 – The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott
Favorite Childhood Book – From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Lost Summer of Louisa Mae Alcott and Burning Lamp.
My favorite book was also “The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” — can’t tell you how much I wanted to run away from home and live in that museum.
Wow those are some gorgeous covers.
Amanda Quick’s Burning Lamp because I’m in it for the long haul with the Arcane Society and The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott because it’s NOT about Mr Darcy.
I had to look up the author of my favorite girlhood book; Daddy Long Legs, it was Jean Webster. I’m still a sucker for stories about orphans who end up with rich men… sad to say but it still works for me.

Growing up, I think my favorite book was “The Witch of Blackbird Pond.” I must have read that book until the spine wore out. Followed closely by “Isle of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell (I think?) Those are the books I still remember *blank* years later, so that says something.
@rebecca b: God, I loved Blackbird Pond! And The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle… those two are still on my bookshelf.
My 2 choices would be
The Creation of Eve and My Wife’s Affair…they both sound really good.

Thanks for this chance!
First choice – Amanda Quick’s The Burning Lamp.
Second choice – MY NAME IS MEMORY sounds interesting.
I didn’t read as a child. But I remember the summer I was 16, there was a Library By Mail program. Great for someone living in Rural Texas at the time. I started with The Flame and The Flower. Good thing my parents had no idea what I was reading.
Oh, I’d love to get my hands on “My Name is Memory” or “Burning Lamp.” Thanks so much for the generous offer!
As for favorite childhood book, I’ll go back pretty far and say “The Monster at the End of This Book.” Grover is awesome.
Would love the Quick and the Kwok books.

The Creation of Eve and The Burning Lamp.
My favorite book from childhood? Geez… Burnett’s The Little Princess or The Black Cauldron.
I’d love either The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott or My Name is Memory.

I read Jane Eyre when I was nine (which means I have been in love with Rochester since forever), and since it remains to this day one of my favorite reads — I reread it at least once a year, haha — that’ll have to be top childhood read for me. :) So timeless!
And it taught a young me a lot about angst, lol.

The other comments reminded me of childhood books I loved (my complete collection of Nancy Drew, Witch of Blackbird Pond, and Island of the Blue Dolphins) but my favorite childhood book of all time would be Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. Back when librarian’s checked books out by hand, the slip had my library card number, my number, my number, someone else’s number, my number, my number…ad infinitum. :) Close second would be A Ring of Endless Light by Madeline L’Engle. Made me want to be a marine biologist.
1.) Girl in Translation

My childhood faves – My first thought was Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon. Then,as I read through the comments I kept thinking, “oh! I like that one, too” So I need to add The Monster at the End of This Book, and Little Women/Little Men/Jo’s Boys. I also LOVED Trixie Belden mysteries. Even when I was little I used to daydream what it would be like when Trixie and Jim got married and had kids…
