TORN by Julie Kenner
This is the second book in Julie’s "Blood Lily Chronicles", an urban fantasy trilogy we’re publishing back to back. (This means very little waiting for the next installment, which is a good thing with such a fast-paced and exciting story.) Lily Carlyle has always lived on the edge. But after she died while avenging her younger sister, she came back to life as someone else-‘and was recruited as an assassin for the light. At least that’s what she thought-. Now Lily is in trouble of the deepest kind, since it turns out the bad guys she was killing actually weren’t the bad guys at all. With a little help from half angel, half demon Deacon Campshire, she must try to take down the enemy from within as a double agent. |

MARION ZIMMER BRADLEY’S SWORD OF AVALON by Diana L. Paxson
Many of you will be familiar with Marion Zimmer Bradley’s powerful female-centric retelling of the Arthurian mythos, THE MISTS OF AVALON. After its publication, Marion wrote a number of prequels. When Marion passed away, Diana Paxson, her long time collaborator, completed PRIESTESS OF AVALON and went on to write more beautiful historical fantasy novels set in this world. SWORD OF AVALON is the origin story of the forging of Excalibur. It includes fascinating historical detail and tells of the love between a girl training to be a priestess and the young man who is destined to wield the sword. |

DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner
We wouldn’t be Ace and Roc if we didn’t have a fabulous new urban fantasy series for you, and this one is fresh and fun and worth a try for Vicky’s hapless zombie apprentice alone. DEADTOWN features shapeshifter Vicky Vaughan, professional demon-slayer and dreamwalker, who keeps Boston safe from nightmares of all shapes and sizes. While single-handedly saving Boston from destruction won’t be easy, it gets harder when Vicky’s got a foolhardy zombie apprentice to worry about, a mysterious demon-plagued client (who keeps firing her), and a shifter-niece kidnapped by a “research facility” (which is really more like Dr. Moreau’s island for paranormals). |

THE SPIRIT LENS by Carol Berg
Carol writes complex, character-driven fantasy, the kind of book you can curl up and get lost in, and THE SPIRIT LENS is no exception. The first of her new Collegia Magica trilogy, it’s set in a kingdom on the verge of a renaissance, where natural science has supplanted sorcery. For Portier de Savin-Duplais, failed student of magic, sorcery’s decline into ambiguity and cheap illusion is but a culmination of life’s bitter disappointments. Reduced to tending the library at Sabria’s last collegia magica, he fights off despair with scholarship. But when the King of Sabria charges him to investigate an attempted murder that has disturbing magical resonances, Portier believes his dreams of a greater destiny might at last be fulfilled. |

BLOOD CROSS by Faith Hunter
Vampire hunter and skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is back in the sequel to urban fantasy SKINWALKER. But this time she finds herself on the other side, working for the vampires. Jane’s been hired by the Vampire Council of New Orleans to hunt and kill one of their own, who has broken ancient rules. With the help of her witch best friend and local vigilantes, Jane finds herself caught between bitter rivalries-‘and closer than ever to the secret origin of the entire vampire race. If you’re still not convinced, don’t forget: Jane’s love interest is a hot Cajun biker! |

UNKNOWN by Rachel Caine
I really love Rachel’s Outcast Season series. It’s set in her Weather Warden universe, where certain humans have the ability to control the powers of weather, fire, earth, but from the point of view of one of the djinn. And not just any of the djinn, but Cassiel, one of the most powerful (and aloof). But when she defied her ruler, she was cast out and forced to take human flesh as punishment. As a being that has spent millennia viewing humans the same way we do ants, becoming mortal really puts her through culture shock. Especially when she starts falling for one of them- |

EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
It’s funny, I didn’t notice it until I was putting this together, but EXCEPT THE QUEEN has a similar theme to UNKNOWN, except it has fairies getting cast out instead of djinn. This is a wonderful contemporary fantasy novel, from authors who are highly regarded in the field. Two sisters are proud members of the high court of the Fairy Queen-‘until they discover a secret Her Highness would like to keep hidden. Cast out from court and stripped of their powers, they are banished to the mortal realm. There, each bonds with a troubled mortal: one with a young girl bearing an ornate tattoo, a magic symbol that will draw evil to them; and the other with a homeless boy whose mind is plagued by dark visions and nightmarish creatures. The sisters know that these signs point to a force whose power is rising-‘one that threatens both the fairy and human worlds. |

We are giving away one book to 15 random commenters. Please leave a comment identifying your first and second choice AND your own ACE/ROC recommendation.
My rec: Simon R. Green! His Nightside series is wonderful and I wish he was more known but honestly, I haven’t found one person who has reads his books. I also just reviewed Confessions of a Demon by S.L. Wright and absolutely loved it! And anything by Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. Seriously – ANYTHING.
I can’t wait to read DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner and BLOOD CROSS by Faith Hunter. I really liked SKINWALKER, the prequel. Those are my two choices, I can’t wait for Kenner’s second book, loved the first and I’m definitely checking the others out! Great line-up.
I’ve been recommending Jim Butcher’s CODEX ALERA series to anyone who’ll listen. Now that the series is complete, I think I can persuade a few more people to read it (and just flat out buy it as gifts for a few select others).
BLOOD CROSS is 1st on my “I want!” list. I also think DEADTOWN sounds pretty awesome!
ACE/ROC always has such a great lineup!
Oh a lot of goodies there! My first choice would be
# DEADTOWN / Nancy Holzner
and the second
# EXCEPT THE QUEEN / Jane Yolen & Midori Snyder
The first cos I have seen it around and it has my interest, the second cos it sounds cool.
I would say that Jim Butche’rs First Lords Fury sounds really great and appealing.
1st choice: Nancy Holzner’s DEADTOWN
2nd choice: Faith Hunter’s BLOOD CROSS
ACE/ROC recommendation: Jes Battis’s NIGHT CHILD. Think it came out in 2008. Love how the author made the paranormal sound scientific. Love that it was set in Vancouver. Have yet to get my mitts on the sequel (A FLASH OF HEX) or the third novel (INHUMAN RESOURCES, due out late May/early June), but I hope to own them someday ;-)
1st choice: Deadtown
2nd choice: Except the Queen
Recommendation: Julie Kenner’s Tainted. I just finished reading it and it’s one of the best urban fantasies I’ve read in quite a long while!
I always try to talk up Rob Thurman and Anne Bishop. I’ve loved everything they’ve written! I agree with Butcher’s Alera series…most know him for Harry, but these books are just as good. Patrick Rothfuss..though he’s only got the one book out, it’s a winner!
1st choice..Faith Hunter <love love love her
2nd choice..Rachel Caine …same goes :)
First Choice: Except the Queen
Second Choice: Deadtown
I recommend the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. It’s really one of the greatest series out there. Second or equal to Ann Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series and Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series. I recently bought Confessions of a Demon and I’m glad to see Wendy above loved it!
My own rec would be MAGIC IN THE SHADOWS, the 3rd Allie Beckstrom novel by Devon Monk.
Out of this excellent line up of forthcoming ACE/ROC books, I’d love:
1) EXCEPT THE QUEEN
2) DEADTOWN
Cheers,
Kaz
1. Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Sword of Avalon
2. Torn by Julie Kenner
I recommend Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton to anyone who’ll listen. I love the Anita Blake series and think it’s a great stepping stone into the world of urband fantasy.
Oh, I’d recommend Devon Monk’s books. The third, and most recent, is MAGIC IN THE SHADOWS. It’s fantastic, with complex world-building, a swift plot and intriguing characters.
My first choice would be EXCEPT THE QUEEN and my second choice would be THE SPIRIT LENS, although they all look great!
Ooo, new books–shiny!
My first choice would be the Carol Berg THE SPIRIT LENS. I have been a fan of hers forever.
And I seem be be joining the crowd when I mention EXCEPT THE QUEEN. Looks like Ace/ROC has a winner on their hands there.
(And I will buy these two books if I don’t win).
And I will always love ACE for putting out the mm editions of all the Liaden books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Currently, I’ve been pushing Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. Love them!
@Wendy: Here’s a Simon R. Green fan. *Waving wildly* The gross out factor can be high in his books but it’s never stopped me from reading (or listening to) his books. While I’ve been enjoying his Secret History series– I’m on the second one, Demons Are Forever, I still occasionally pick up his Hawk & Fisher series.
I’m thinking about giving the Carol Berg a try because I did like her first few books- lost track of her most recent ones and the Yolen/Snyder because I have enjoyed individual books by both of these authors.
1st choice: DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner
2nd choice: EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
I recommend Midnight’s Daughter by Karen Chance for vampire and urban fantasy lovers. I was intrigued from the moment I heard the heroine is mentally challenged (dhampirs are unstable in Chance’s world) and Dracula’s niece.
1st Choice – Except the Queen
2nd Choice – Torn
of course Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher are probably my favorite Ace authors
#1 for me would be the new Rachel Caine
#2 would be the new Faith Hunter
However – like Paula, I can’t wait for the next Karen Chance novels….
Great contest. These titles all sounds sooo interesting!
My first choice would be DEADTOWN; the second choice UNKNOWN.
Marjorie Liu is a great author. I recommend DARKNESS CALLS or any of the books in the Maxine Kiss series.
Great contest. My first choice would be DEADTOWN. My second choice would be TORN.
I’d have to say (1)Deadtown and (2)Unknown
And I LOVED Faith Hunter’s Rogue Mage novels. Excellent!
I love Simon R Green, too! I’ve been reading his Nightside series since the beginning. Love the quirkiness and dry humor of his writing.
#1 would be Unknown
#2 would be Blood Cross
I also am waiting eagerly for the Patricia Briggs book and Ilona Andrews. Aren’t they coming out later in 2010 than they did in 2009? Rats. But I am still eager :)
I LOVE URBAN FANTASY!
1st choice the Faith Hunter’s latest
2nd would be Rachel Caine’s Unknown
My recs would be for Patricia Briggs (I’m waiting for the paperback release of Bone Crossed), Ilona Andrews (Is it May 2010 yet? BTW there’s an excerpt for On the Edge series at Ilona Andrews website) and Karen Chance (I’m rooting for Pritkin).
I'd recommend Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom books.
1. Except the queen
2. Deadtown
1st Choice: Except the Queen
2nd Choice: Spirit Lens
I’m also looking forward to the new Hendee novel of the Noble Dead Through Stone and Sea. I *love* that series!
Lexie
First choice would be TORN by Julie Kenner, second DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner.
As far as recommendations go…I have to tout Ilona Andrews, either the Kate Daniels series, or her new Edge series. Then there’s Lisa Shearin, whose Raine Benares series is definitely excellent. Oh oh! Or Rob Thurman’s Cal Leandros series.
Should I stop now? ;)
What a great giveaway! Thanks to Ace and Roc for offering it.
I think my first choice would be The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg, followed closely by Julie Kenner’s Torn. Truthfully, though, all the books listed look good.
I loved Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson and Alpha/Omega series so much that I’ve been working my way through her backlist. I also love Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series.
I would like either
â– DEADTOWN / Nancy Holzner – 2 finished copies
or
â– BLOOD CROSS / Faith Hunter – 2 ARCs
I just finished On the Edge by Ilona Andrews and loved it! I also recommend both Patricia Briggs series, Mercy Thompson and the Alpha and Omega books.
Thanks for the opportunity to win! :)
Patrice
1. Deadtown
2. Torn
I love the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher.
Well, picking my favorite won’t be hard since I didnt read the intro or the months and thought they might be out now… (I would make a horrible spy with my lack of any detail noticing skills)
Torn By Julie Kenner looks really good, and I love the first Outcast book, and have been eagerly anticipating the second, so Rachel Caine Unknown is my second choice (because I would buy it anyway, so for a free book, I should like to take a risk!)
Excellent giveaway and write up!
So many wonderful choices. If chosen, I’d have to boil it down to 1) “Torn” by Julie Kenner (just picked up “Tainted”) and 2) “Except the Queen” by Jane Yolen & Midori Snyder.
@DS:
Hi, DS!! So happy to hear someone likes his books too! They can be pretty gross, but I just love the books, his writing is so awesome. I haven’t read his Secret books but I do have the first one in my pile!
My first choice would be Deadtown and second choice The Spirit Lens. I’ve been recommending Kat Richardson’s Greywalker series all year. Love the characters! I’m hoping to get the latest book for Christmas. ;-)
Thanks for offering this wonderful giveaway!
Oh my recommendation would be Devon Monk’s Allie Beckstrom series and for sure anything by Ilona Andrews. Love both!
My favorite would be: DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner
And the follow up: EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
Great giveaway!
I’d love to read 1) DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner, 2) EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
I’d recommend Ilona Andrews! One of my favorites. Awesome storytelling.
My first choice would be The Spirit Lens and second would be Except the Queen. Recommending my own is hard because Roc really does publish a number of excellent titles. Jim Butcher is of course a favorite. If you are a fantasy reader, you have to read the Age of Fire series by E. E. Knight. My husband and I both love those books.
My recommendation would be Robin McKinley. The first book of hers that I read was Sunshine, and it was a richly told, very original vampire story. I read Deerskin for a class not too long after Sunshine, and I love her writing style.
My first choice would definitely be Carol Berg’s “The Spirit Lens,” and my second is “Deadtown” by Nancy Holzner.
Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
First choice would be EXCEPT THE QUEEN (this sounds like an great book)
Second choice would be THE SPIRIT LENS
I frequently recommend anything that Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews write to family and friends.
These giveaways are a lot of fun, and yet more great-looking titles this time.
First, my recs:
1. On the Edge by Ilona Andrews – as if everyone hasn’t read it already, it is just awesome
2. Devon Monk’s Allie Beckstrom series, beginning with Magic to the Bone – great magic system in this one.
3. The Raine Benares series by Lisa Shearin, beginning with Magic Lost, Trouble Found – one of the most fun fantasy series I’ve ever read.
If I won I would love to get either Except the Queen or The Spirit Lens
Thanks!
My choices would be 1) DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner, 2) EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
As far as recs, I’m going to go with The Noble Dead series by Barb & Jc Hendee. I’ve barely started the first, but my husband gobbled them up like candy (and recs don’t come much higher than that for me)
I would recommend Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. She and her husband are amazing.
I would love to review Except The Queen (I am feeling cover love)
or
Unknown by Rachel Vincent (she is another one of my favorites.)
Thanks for the chance to read these.
Cool recommendations!
I clicked through to their page, and of the new releases, I have to put in a word for Robin McKinley’s Chalice. I haven’t read it, but I love everything she does.
My first choice for an ARC would be Except the Queen (I read and loved Snyder’s book The Innamorati) and second choice is The Spirit Lens.
Wow, what choices….
I would love to read:
1) Except The Queen — I’ve greatly enjoyed works by both Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder and would LOVE to see how they work together
2) The Spirit Lens — Can’t get enough of Berg’s prose!
My first choice would be DEADTOWN / Nancy Holzner and my second choice would be BLOOD CROSS / Faith Hunter.
For a recommendation I would have to second the Simon Green Nightside Series and also recommend the Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman both of these are excellent
My first choice is Except the Queen, the second Deadtown. I highly recommend anything by Patricia Briggs.
Thanks for the chance to win! :)
1st-Except the Queen
2nd-Unknown
Hands down Steven R. Boyett. I fell in love with his book Ariel back in the 80’s, and am trying to find Elegy Beach locally for a Christmas present. I’m so glad Ariel was reprinted and expanded…now there’s much much more to love. :))
They ALL look good. But I’d have to have Deadtown and Spirit Lens as my picks simply because they’re firsts instead of sequels. My recommendation would be Kenner’s first book in that series :)
I would be happy to win (and read) any of these wonderful books!
JB Hunt
1st choice- The Spirit Lens
2nd Choice- Except the Queen.
My own person Ace/Roc recommendation–Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series. It blew me away.
Recs: Anything by Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher.
1st choice:
UNKNOWN / Rachel Caine
2nd choice:
BLOOD CROSS / Faith Hunter
Thanks for the giveaway!
My recommendation is for Rob Thurman’s Cal Leandros series. Love Cal and Niko!
Choices are:
1. EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
2. UNKNOWN by Rachel Caine
Recommend midnight’s daughter by Karen chance. My choices #1 unknown #2 torn.
I’d love to add to my MZB collection with “Sword of Avalon” by Diana Paxson. I have been reading & collecting MZB’s books since high school.
I’d also like “Except the Queen” by Yolen & Snyder. I’d love to see how they team up.
As far as recommending goes, I have eclectic tastes. I love Jim Butcher and Simon R Green, as well as Robin McKinley.
I’d really love to win, especially since my birthday is coming up :)
1. Unknown
2. Torn
I’d recommend Patricia Briggs new series, based in the same world as Mercy’s
1st: DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner
2nd: BLOOD CROSS by Faith Hunter
And I HIGHLY recommend Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series!
#1 – THE SPIRIT LENS
#2 – TORN
I’m very new to the paranormal subgenre, just got my feet wet with the first Sookie Stackhouse book by Charlaine Harris so I’ll recommend DEAD UNTIL DARK. I quite enjoyed it and am now plowing through the rest of Sookie’s adventures.
Thanks for the giveaway.
TORN / Julie Kenner
UNKNOWN / Rachel Caine
Would love to read these books
I would have to recommend anything by Ilona Andrews she has some fabulous books out.
1) UNKNOWN / Rachel Caine
2) EXCEPT THE QUEEN / Jane Yolen & Midori Snyder
I’m a huge fan of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, and pretty much everything by Anne Bishop. Her Black Jewels Trilogy is my personal favorite of her works.
1. Except The Queen
2. Spirit Lens
I’m a huge fan of Ilona Andrews and highly recommend her work in the crowded Urban Fantasy field!
“Hapless zombie apprentice”? Deadtown has to be my first choice based on that description alone. Torn is my second.
From ACE/ROC, my favorites are Rob Thurman, Devon Monk and Patricia Briggs. I love every word these authors have written.
Thanks for this great opportunity!
My choices would be Torn by Julie Kenner and second DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner.
As for my recommendation: The Cal and Niko books by Rob Thurman– all of them!
Thanks:)
1st Choice: The Spirit Lens
2nd Choice: Bloodcross
They all sound amazing, but those 2 sound diffiernt enough to make me get all drooly and excited! (What an awful picture.)
1st choice, Deadtown
2nd, Except the Queen
All the books sound so great it was tough to choose.
1st Choice – Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
2nd Choice – Unknown by Rachel Caine
My recommendation would be the Mercy Thompson series starting with MOON CALLED by Patricia Briggs. Also the Cassandra Palmer series starting with TOUCH THE DARK by Karen Chance – both are excellent!
1. UNKNOWN / Rachel Caine
2. EXCEPT THE QUEEN / Jane Yolen & Midori Snyder
My recommendations from Ace: anything written by Patricia Briggs and Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. :)
@rosecolette: I completely forgot to add my recs — d’oh. Julie Kenner’s “Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom” series. Adventure, snark, tender moments… The series has it all.
My first choice is Blood Cross by Faith Hunter. I love her work so she’s an old favorite. My second choice would be Deadtown by Nancy Holzner for someone new to me.
My recommendations from Ace are of course anything by Patricia Briggs and I also love all of Rob Thurman’s books. Oh, and Karen Chance. Oh, and Rachel Caine. Wait, wait, Ilona Andrews. Okay, done. Crap, did I leave out Simon Green and Robin McKinley? Okay, now I’m done. Seriously.
#1 DEADTOWN
#2 BLOOD CROSS
#3 Any of the books listed in the post!
Recommendations: The Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher, everything by Patricia Briggs. I just discovered Devon Monk and am enjoying those too.
My first choice would be UNKNOWN by Rachel Caine, and second would be BLOOD CROSS by Faith Hunter.
For the recommendation, I’ll admit to not reading a lot of Ace/Roc books, but I have really enjoyed Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden books. I haven’t tried her newer series yet…
Thanks for the contest!
My first choice would be Carol Berg’s “Spirit Lens”, followed closely by “Deadtown” and “Blood Cross”.
I absolutely love both fantasy and vampire novels. In fact, out of several hundred books on my Kindle, probably 80% fall into those two catagories! (I have in excess of 1,300 boks on it right now!!)
For my first choice, The Spirit Lens. (Can’t wait to read it!)
Second choice, Deadtown.
I highly recommend anything by Jim Butcher – am always anxious to get his books. Then there’s Carol Berg’s Books – I can’t put them down and always end up re-reading them. Every time.
#1 Spirit Lens
#2 Except the Queen
And there are LOTS of great books and authors recommended – Im going to mention one I dont think has been yet
Patrice Sarath – Gordath Wood and Red Gold Bridge – modern cross over world fantasy with added horses :)
First Choice: The Spirit Lens
Second Choice: Blood Cross
I love so many Ace/Roc books it’s hard to pick one, but I think Gordath Wood by Patrice Sarath should be more widely read
@Wendy: I’ve actually read ALL of his Nightside series, and all of his Edwin Drood series. (can’t get into Deathstalker). Nightside is cool – they’re addictive books that I can’t put down when I’m reading them, but after I’m done I have a queasy feeling, much like the way visiting the nightside would be, I imagine. I’m still not sure if I actually like John Taylor, although he’s definitely an interesting character to say the least. My fave of the Nightside series was actually a short story I read in an anthology w/ another main character, a ghost PI (can’t remember his name, but it was very interesting to see John Taylor from the outside, so to speak).
I actually like the Edwin Drood books much more, I just finished reading the latest one. Walker’s a main character in it, so if you ever wanted to know (a little) more about him…
As for the books in the post, many sound interesting! I’ve been a fan of Julie Kenner’s Demon series for a while, so I might check that book out. I really like the cover, she’s wearing jeans and looks like she *might* actually be able to fight in her clothes! (not too tight, she’s still wearing heels but hey, I know some people – not me- can run in them, and least they’re boots. Plus, the spikes might come in handy.) The trench can cover up the sword, like the dudes in Highlander. That’s one of my pet peeves, covers w/ heroes or heroines wearing clothbes they couldn’t possibly fight in (assuming the book is about a fighter, of course). So yeah, looks interesting!
My first choice: Julie Kenner. Second: Rachel Caine (I like her Morganville Vamps).
Recommendation: Simon R. Green’s Edwin Drood series, of course
I would love the opportunity to try a few new authors, so:
#1 – Deadtown
#2 – Except the Queen
I highly recommend Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs, both of whom I discovered through Dear Author.
I’ve got a copy of Deadtown coming my way, so my choices would be: BLOOD CROSS by Faith Hunter and UNKNOWN by Rachel Caine
My first choice: Spirit Lens by Carol Berg. Second choice: Except the Queen by Jane Yolen.
I’d recommend anything by Carol Berg. All her books are fabulous.
#1- Torn
#2- Unknown
My recommendation is Jim Butcher’s The Dresden File series.
First choice by far: The Spirit Lens by the awesome Carol Berg. Second choice would be Deadtown for the urban setting and fun female heroine.
Recommendation is anything by Carol Berg but especially Song of the Beast, my personal favorite since I am a musician.
1- Deadtown
2- Blood Cross
Recommend Ilona Andrews, love the Kate Daniels books and On the Edge was full of win as well!
1 – The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
2 – Unknown by Rachel Caine
Big fan of both Carol Berg and Rachel Caine — delighted to hear there are new books coming out!
1 – The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg (totally love all her books)
2 – The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg :) (I just can’t help myself)
Recommend ‘Flesh & the Spirit’ by Carol Berg, just finished reading this for the 3rd time yesterday
I’m relatively new to the PNR genre, so many of these authors are still in my TBR pile, however, of the ones that I have read, I love Patricia Briggs, Rachel Caine and Karen Chance.
I’d love to get either 1)Torn by Julie Kenner, or 2)Blood Cross by Faith Hunter. In both cases, the first book of each series is on my list so if I won the second, it would force me to get cracking on it.
1- Unknown by Rachel Caine
2- The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
I would recommend The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. The writing is wonderful, and its full of tons of humor and mystery and action. I’m also a huge fan of Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels novels.
First Choice Deadtown
Second Choice Blood Cross
Reccomendation: Torn by Julie Kenner. I liked this better than the first in the series, and I love her suburban Mom vampire hunter series with play on word titles!
This seems like the way most people have commented but:
1st choice: Deadtown
2nd choice: Torn
My rec? It doesn’t come out until January, but I’d say Doppelganster. You can’t go wrong with an insane title like that.
1. Unknown
2. Except the Queen
Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop is always my number one recomendation. And if recall correctly, Mindy L. Klasky’s Glasswrights’ Apprentice is from Roc, too. Both are oldies, but still amazing.
Would love to read Dead Town or Torn.
Recommend Club Dead, the anthology by Charlaine Harris and Kindred in Death by JD Robb.
#1 – The Spirit Lens
#2 – Sword of Avalon
Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera’s books are some of the best fantasy I’ve ever read.
First choice: Blood Cross. Second choice: Unknown.
Just finished the 2nd Mercedes Thompson half and hour ago and I’m hungry for more. I actually started with the Alpha and Omega series last year and have to confess I prefer that series. But I’ve been having a lot of fun with Mercedes too. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes their fantasy romance-friendly.
Jim Butcher has just finished his high fantasy series Codex Alera with “First Lord’s Fury”. It’s a great read.
I’d love to have either
1. Bloodcross by Faith Hunter or
2. The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
@Elisa:
Another one! Yay. You know, John’s an interesting character. Half the time, I think he’s sweet in a weird not-really kind of way. I mean, his definition of sweet could very well mean killing your enemy but still, I like him. But I kind of don’t. It’s odd.
Glad to hear you like the other series, I can’t wait to read those either!
My first choice would be Carol Berg’s The Spirit Lens, and my second choice would have to be Carol Berg’s The Spirit Lens :). I think she’s an amazing author.
My ROC recommendation would be any of Anne Bishop’s books! Or Wen Spencer, A Brother’s Price was an interesting and unique story.
1st choice: The Spirit Lens
2nd choice: Except the Queen
I recommend everything Carol Berg has written. I just finished reading Flesh and Spirit, am now reading Breath and Bone, which comprise her most recent series, and I think they’re her best work yet (no wonder they won the Mythopoeic Award). I can’t wait to read The Spirit Lens.
I also like Patricia Briggs’ Hurog duology and Raven duology. Both are very enjoyable and page-turning secondary world fantasy, and it’s too bad they’re not as well known as her urban fantasy series.
1- Deadtown
2-Torn
I can’t recommend any because I didn’t know there was an Ace or Roc. All of them look great! Hmmm which ones to write on mah Christmas list?
First choice: Unknown by Rachel Caine. Love her Djinn books.
Second choice: Blood Cross by Faith Hunter.
I always recommend Ilona Andrews’ books to anyone who will listen. Their Kate Daniels series renewed my urban fantasy cravings.
1. Unknown by Rachel Caine
2. The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg.
I alos recommend Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Marjorie Liu and Devon Monk.
What a great giveaway! My first choice would be “Except the Queen” (I heart Jane Yolen!) and my second choice would be “The Spirit Lens.” I already plan to snap up “Bloodcross” the instant it’s released :-). My recommendation has to be for Ann Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series – I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series! Also I second (third, fourth) the Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher and Simon Green reccs. And I just got hooked on Ilona Andrews…so many books, so little time!
1. The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg. I loved her previous series.
2. Deadtown by Nancy Holzer. Always anxious to try out a new series!
I can’t think of any recommendations that haven’t been made already. The Codex Alera, Ilona Andrews, Anne Bishop… Even Wen Spencer got a mention, and she was a recent discovery for me. Great books!
choice 1: BLOOD CROSS / Faith Hunter
choice 2: TORN / Julie Kenner
I’d reccomend On the Edge by Ilona Andrews
1. Spirit Lens
2. Except the Queen
My recommendations are for any of Carol Berg’s books, my favorites being flesh and spirit/breath and bone as well as the rai-kirah series (the first being Transformtion I believe).
I had looked at TORN with eager eyes, but being the season, my $ has to go for others. It’s on my wish list, but I rarely get books from hubby or friends. Believe it or not, they think that since I’m an author, I can handle the “book department” on my own — whatever that means! LOL!.
DEADTOWN would be my second choice simply because it has zombies, and the title is very eye-catching!
Hear, hear on the Jim Butcher series! ITA, especially if you want something completely different in fantasy.
I find it very intriguing that so many of the heroines are “shifters” or “skinwalkers”. Has there ever been a series where the WOMAN was ex-military?
1st choice–Torn/Julie Kenner
2nd choice–Deadtown/Nancy Holzer
And I’m always recommending Jim Butcher books. Well written, great action.
1. Deadtown
2. The Spirit Lens
And I have to recommend Ilona Andrews. I’ve pre-ordered Magic Bleeds months in advance.
1. Unknown by Rachel Caine
2. Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
My recs would be Chalice by Robin Mckinley and I love Patricia Briggs.
@Linda:
Hell yes!! Two classic women ex military spring to mind – the Jani Kilian series by Kristine Smith and Elizabeth Bear’s Jenny Casey trilogy
http://www.elizabethbear.com/jenny.html
http://www.kristine-smith.com/books.htm#
And then there is the Kris Longknife series where she is active military in the beginning and kinda diplomatic military later on
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/s/mike-shepherd/
1. The Spirit Lens
2. Except the Queen
My own reading tastes lean more toward epic or fairytale(ish) fantasy with a dash of romance — I recommend Guy Gavriel Kay and Patricia McKillip. Carol Berg is on my “read more!” list, especially after reading Guardians of the Keep.
1. Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
2. Torn by Julie Kenner
My rec would definitely be Ann Aguirre’s Sarantha Jax series. I just finished Doubleblind and it was another great book in this series.
my rec: heir to sevenwaters by juliet marillier–i love the way she writes and this book is a must especially for those who read the first three books for the sevenwaters trilogy
i’d love to read:
-except the queen
-deadtown
1st would be THE SPIRIT LENS by Carol Berg.
2nd would be DEADTOWN by Nancy Holzner.
List: anything by Karen Chance or Patricia Briggs
1st choice : Unknown by Rachel Caine
2nd choice: Except the Queen by Jane Yolen & Midori Snyder
I would recommend anything written by Jim Butcher or Patricia Briggs.
1. The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
2. MARION ZIMMER BRADLEY'S SWORD OF AVALON by Diana L. Paxson
I would recommend Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera novels and of course, all novels by Carol Berg!
Hmm this is a really hard list to choose from. This is why I love Ace/ROC -their editors are amazing and they do a fine job of picking great new authors. I always know that a new title by this publisher will likely be something incredibly entertaining and well written. No- I am not a shill for the company I just appreciate what they do.
For my picks I would go for authors I havent yet read or havent read in ages:
1st pick Deadtown by Nancy Holzner ( Boston what! what!)
2nd pick Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
Honorable Mentions:
Except the Queen- I have always loved Jane Yolen’s YA stuff its breathtaking
Bloodcross – Faith Hunter always has fresh and well executed ideas and characters
Unknown- Rachel Caine is always entertaining
Such a great selection of books!!!
1 – Bloodcross – Faith Hunter (whoo Hoo!!!)
2 – Torn – Julie Kenner
As a back- up =Deadtown – Nancy Holzner
Its not an ARC recommendation, but you gotta read Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler

Heather
I’m joining the crowd with first choice DEADTOWN and second choice BLOOD CROSS or EXCEPT THE QUEEN, but I’m honestly interested in ALL the books listed and would be thrilled with any of them. :)
My recommendations are for two FANTASTIC series: The Cal Leandros books by Rob Thurman and the Dog Days series by John Levitt. Excellent reads. I also really enjoyed CHALICE by Robin McKinley.
Thanks for the contest!
Oooh, terrific giveaway! My choices would be
1. Deadtown by Nancy Holtzner
2. Except the Queen by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
And I recommend the Ravirn series by Kelly McCullough.
Thanks for the excellent contest!
@Linda: Tanya Huff’s Valor series features an active military heroine, a Staff Sergeant. Granted, it’s a space military of the future (can’t remember the branch, I think Marines?) but the military mindset seems realistic to me (at least from my admittedly limited experience). It’s not my favorite Tanya Huff series (my faves are the Blood books, closely followed by standalones like the Fire’s Stone and Gate of Darkness Circle of Light) but it’s pretty good.
More great releases. My choices would be:
1. Unknown
2. Torn
My recommendation would be The Good The Bad and the Uncanny by Simon Green/
First choice: Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
Second choice: Torn by Julie Kenner

2nd choice: Except The Queen
Thank you for the holiday giveaway….Mitzi.

Recommendations: Kinda depends on people’s tastes. All the following authors are good – Julie Kenner, Patricia Briggs, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Jim Butcher, Devon Monk, Kristen Landon, Faith Hunter, Sharon Shinn, Juliet Marillier, Robin McKinley, Anne Bishop…never ask me to name favorites, it inevitably leads to ginormous lists. :)
Anne Bishop and Karen Chance are two of my recommendations.

1. THE SPIRIT LENS by Carol Berg
2. EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
I’ve been dying to read The Spirit Lens. Carol Berg is my absolute favorite author. I often find myself rereading her books when I’m supposed to be trying new things. The Lighthouse Duet had an especially satisfying ending, unlike anything I’ve encountered in fantasy before.
great contest!
I wholeheartedly echo the recs for Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. A YA series that I recently read and recommend is “Midnighters” by Scott Westerfield.

But all of the books look amazing. Thanks for the awesome holiday contest! My recs are Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance and my DH’s new fave Jim Butcher.
Like the comment above I would recommend anything by Carol Berg, especially her Lighthouse series had me captivated for days after I read it. Her worldbuilding is spectacular and I can’t wait to read her new novel! For the more urban fantasy minded I’d put forward the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews which has some deep character building and awesome world structure too!
I’d love ;
1st choice) The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
2nd choice) Except the Queen by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
The Magic Bites series by Ilona Andrews is probably my favorite from ACE/ROC.
I’ve been wanting to try Carol Berg and EXCEPT THE QUEEN sounds interesting.
Except the Queen and Torn would be my #1 and #2 choices, respectively.
I love Ace/Roc books, and would be hard-pressed to choose just 1 author, but in the next couple months I’m really looking forward to the releases of Changes by Jim Butcher and Shalador’s Lady by Anne Bishop.
My 1st choice would be “The Spirit Lens” by Carol Berg, and my second choice would be “Except The Queen” by Janet Yolen and Midori Snyder.
As for the recommendation, does it have to be only one? I read so many of your authors! Well, the one I’ve been recommending the most, recently, is “On The Edge” by Ilona Andrews. I love it – maybe even more than her Kate Daniels series (which I also love)! Not exactly urban fantasy…Appalachaian fantasy?? Great world-building, great characters, great story. I’ve also been recommending all of Devon Monk’s books (just finished the 3rd, my favorite!) and Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera – I’m hoping to get First Lord’s Fury for Christmas.
I would recommend Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega series and I really liked Rob Thurman’s new Trixa series.
Torn by Julie Kenner sounds really interesting and my second choice would be “Except The Queen†by Janet Yolen and Midori Snyder.
I would love to get my hands on Carol Berg’s The Spirit Lens. Except the Queen looks pretty great too.
Favorite Ace/Roc author not listed here: Jim Butcher. Sad to see the end of the Codex Alera, but it was nicely wrapped up, at least…
Woohoo!!! All of these titles look excellent!
My first pick is UNKNOWN by Rachel Caine, my second pick is EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Yolen and Snyder.

Torn by Julie Kenner
Unknown by Rachel Caine
And I enjoy anything by Ilona Andrews.
1st choice: Spirit Lens by Carol Berg — she is great
2nd choice: Torn by Julie Kenner — have read the 1st in this series and loved it
I love being a “book pusher” but it is too hard to choose just one author or title so, I would have to say Patricia Briggs (particularly the Alpha/Omega series), Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse series), J D Robb (In Death series), Tanya Huff, Robin McKinley, Alyssa Day and Ann Aguirre. Some of these are authors that I have followed for years and others I have just recently started to read. I also have to second Barb (#11) who says that she loves ACE for releasing the Liaden books by MIller and Lee.
Thanks ACE/ROC for the great giveaway
1: Except the Queen by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
2: The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg
I have to rec anything by Ann Aguirre, Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews too.

Love JR Ward, Charlaine Harris, Ilona Andrews, Ann Aguirre, Patricia Briggs – there are so many! Thanks for the giveaway!
First Choice THE SPIRIT LENS by Carol Berg
Second Choice EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder
Currently, I’d recommend anything by Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Robin McKinley, Carol Berg, Charlaine Harris, Rachel Caine, …
1st: Except the Queen. I have enjoyed everything I’ve ever read with Jane Yolen’s name on it.
2nd: The Spirit Lens. Carol Berg is a new-to-me author I’d like to try.
(tie)
2nd: Sword of Avalon. I’d like to give Diana Paxson another chance — the other Avalon titles that she has written without MZB’s input didn’t really do it for me.
So many wonderful authors, including Robin McKinley, publish with Ace/Roc, that I can’t pick a favorite. But I highly recommend Ann Aguirre’s Sarantha Jax series, starting with Grimspace. SOOO good!
