$25 Visa Giftcard & Book Giveaway: This is Where I Leave You
Today’s giveaway, open to US addresses only, and running until September 12, 2014, is for the book to movie sensation “This Is Where I Leave You” by Jonathan Tropper. The $25 GC can be used to take yourself to the movie and gorge on all the popcorn and candy you like. Or you can take someone with you and eat less.
The cast looks tremendous. I kind of want to watch anything with Tina Fey in it.
When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide—driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.
This Is Where I Leave You stars Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Dax Shepard and Jane Fonda

We used to have a place outside of town that was build in the 1800’s so it had two foot thick limestone walls. I used to curl up on the windowsill and read or look out the windows.
The woods behind my house was my favorite childhood place.
My elementary school library. There was a spot near the back wall where the sun would hit and no one would bother you. I read there all the time.
Anywhere was the best spot for me.
perched in the middle of the stairwell, the only quiet place to get away from the big family and read in peace
Anywhere in the house of my maternal grandmother and grandfather. They let me get away with everything as a kid!
Hmmmm. I guess it was under the big tree in the big open lot next to our house. Or maybe it was in the kitchen baking with my Mom.
My bedroom had my music, books, & posters.
I liked being above ground. I’d climb our neighbor’s maple tree and read there. I also liked to sit on our roof, especially at night.
Near the chess tables at Bennett Park. It was perfect – i could take a dog, I was outside and the chess players would help with any words I got stuck on.
the backyard tree house
I loved the window seat in our dining room when I was a kid.
Strangely, my favorite place was also my closet. It had this raised platform in the back – for storage I guess – and i’d settle in up there with ALL the pillows and blankets and read for hours.
The stream across the street–we used to pretend all kinds of things.
on the swing in my backyard
Definitely the public library. I still feel happy whenever I walk into one.
BTW, I recommend This is Where I Leave You and all of Jonathan Tropper’s novels. They usually feature a middle aged but emotionally adolescent male protagonist with father issues who gets his act together, often with the help of a woman who calls him on his bullshit. Very Nick Hornby.
Public library!
On the bed in my room, if the door was closed and no one bothered me. I could read for hours!!
The huge elderberry bush in my backyard. It had grown around an old stump, so was hollow inside; so when my mother told me to “go play outside” and threw me out of the house, I could bring a blanket and a snack and a book, crawl inside and hide there for hours.
My grandparents’ house. I spent many summers and holidays there. It was full of books and antiques and I had many adventures there.
I had a fort in the woods that I would “carpet” by transplanting moss. I loved it!
(aside: the cast is awesome!)
In the second house we lived when I was a child, there was an storage niche about ten feet from the floor. It was about four feet high and six feet wide and deep, and it was my favorite space in the entire house. (Because I was the only one light enough to climb up there, as well as small enough to be perfectly comfortable laying there reading for hours, plus the fact that it was the only place where I could have a little privacy (being the youngest of give in a house with only three bedrooms didn’t give anyone in the family a lot of that one commodity))
We have crawl spaces in our playroom (with little entrance doors) and my dad carpeted it out so I could sit in there and read. It was the best!
My favorite place was my Nana’s house :)
I loved our swimming pool.
Anywhere in my home.
Backseat of the minivan, we moved a lot and the only thing I’d bring in the car was a stack of books to take me anywhere else but the horrible ‘transition’ phase we were driving toward. My favorite memories are the adventures I would go on in books from the backseat driving cross country.
My bedroom with the door closed. It was the only time I could have some quiet time.
Another closeted kid! (Wait, that came out wrong. STRAIGHT BUT NOT NARROW.) I curled up on the floor of my closet to read. (And this book has been on my to-read list for ages. I better get cracking before the movie comes out, because I gotta see it: I love everything Kathryn Hahn has ever done.)
I spent summer’s at my grandparents farm. They had an old red barn, like the one you see in movies. I used to climb up to the hay loft and read. Toasty warm and I loved the smell of the hay bales.
I’m going to steal from the Lion King for this one: home is where your rump rests. I never had a favorite place (still don’t to this day). If anything my favorite place was always somewhere or something new, never holding still.
My favorite place was at my great grandma’s house.
I loved reading on my bed in my bedroom with the door shut. I still love reading in bed and do it every night before I go to bed.
my favorite place was my grandma’s house
Anywhere I could read. Sometimes I’d sit on my windowsill and read with the window open and enjoy the smell of fresh-cut grass during the spring/summer months.
There was this great comfy chair tucked into a corner of the local library. It was the perfect spot to curl up with a book and not be bothered by anyone.
Alas, while the chair, or a really similar one, is still there, renovations and such have moved it to a much more central location.
My parents built our house when I was in elementary school, and I had a window seat in my closet. Clearly, they knew their daughter well!
outside – in the garden, digging in dirt
Backyard swing. I could swing for hours.
Nana and Pop Pop’s apartment. I had only ever lived in a house so the idea of sharing a building with so many other people seemed very exciting. Plus — ice cream anytime!
My swingset – it had this tube in it between the swings and the slide and I’d sit, lay and play it in all the time.
A big wingback chair in my parents dinning room right in front of the window. We never used the dining room so it was perfect.
Mine was in my bed on a pile of pillows with only some Christmas lights on.
The movie theater. My dad works nights, but have Sundays off. So, most Sunday afternoon we went to the movies.
My bedroom laying on my bed, reading a book.
My favorite childhood place…hmm. I don’t know if I had a favorite, but I always loved sitting in a comfy chair by the front window, especially if there was a book involved.
Going to the library.
the park
Under my parent’s back porch. It was very large and latticed in, and I loved playing “house” under there :) Thanks for sharing!
I loved sitting at my window watching out
I’m not sure I had a real “favorite” place. I guess I liked my closet too, where the carpet was really soft because it so rarely got walked on. I liked sitting in there and playing or reading.
the school playground was my hangout! :-)
My grandparent’s house
I used to read in a specific tree that was in a field near my house. I read all the way through a tornado warning siren once. It just wasn’t a loud enough siren and it wasn’t raining all that hard.
Mine was our family cabin on the water :)
My public library branch. You could find me there, if nowhere else.
My canopy bed was my favorite place to read.
The window seat in our living room!
The space under the kitchen table.
Reading under the covers of my bed with a flashlight. Thanks for the giveaway.
always the beach. we were 10 minutes from the ocean and my mom would take us there every week.
I loved reading in the small tree house my Dad and I built. Thanks for the giveaway.
Vacations at the river. Nothing more relaxing than reading in the shade by the river =)
I loved the tree in my front yard, where I could read for hours in peace and quiet!
My friend had a treehouse.
As a kid on the days I was feeling adventurous, my favorite place was the woods behind our house. On other days my favorite place was my bedroom, door closed, where I would read for hours at a time.
I guess it would be the attic — or as we referred to it, the third floor. We had a cardboard “house” that was purchased when we were really little — it had windows and a door, it was probably about 4′ high and 4′ wide…anyway, I have fond memories of playing in there.
My bedroom with the door closed and my radio on.
the living room — watching tv, reading, playing games or w/ toys, hanging w/ family/friends — good stuff happened in the living room :)
Oddly enough, the bathroom. I would sit on the closed lid of the toilet and read until my legs fell asleep. It was the only place in could close a door and find any privacy.
The public library and Mrs. E. – the children’s librarian who introduced me to so many wonderful books.
We lived at the end of two streets back by woods. My brothers and I spent so much time hanging out in those woods. When I think back to what we used to do. . .
. . . but it was a great place to be a kid.
Under the blankets, with a flashlight. So I could read after my sister with whom I shared a room had gone to bed.
My favorite childhood place was the library. I rode my bicycle there weekly and loaded up with books. I spent many hours there as well, I loved being surrounded by all those books.
I liked to read in my room. My brothers were noisy and nosy, so that was the best place to read.
the cubbard in the backroom! all i remember was that it had red doors took up an entire wall and it was very room with a pillow and blanket and a flash light to read of course!@
The library. I spent pretty much all of my time there.
My favorite place was the local public library. We were very poor, not even a TV for about three years, but we would go to the library almost daily. Thank goodness mom was a reader!
I loved my childhood basement. Down there I would sit in my bean bag chair and play Nintendo w/ my dad, help my mom with the laundry, and play Barbies with my friends.
No lie: the library. I think I spent more time there than at home.
In my bedroom with the door closed so I could get away from my younger brother and sister.
I loved the library. Every summer, I looked forward to when they’d get new kid books. I’d check out half a dozen books and read them all in a week.
I like the school auditorium, because that meant we get to skip class and be entertained.
I had a tire swing in the back yard at one of our houses. I think that was probably my favorite place. Although I spent far more time inside books than anywhere else – and could go anywhere through books, so actually I think I’m going to change that to ‘my favorite childhood place was inside whatever book I was reading.’
There was this big, deep, L shaped closet in an upstairs bedroom that was my (way older) sisters’ room before they moved out…..I loved it there, it was a treasure trove—there were boxes of old 45 singles, clothes and tons of boxes of books (which is how I ended up reading Steinbeck when I was 8 years old)!!
Definitely my tree house. I remember that is where I first discovered Judy Blume books. You couldn’t tear me away.
We had a huge detached garage where I would go to hang out with friends or play with my dolls.
My favorite childhood place was my grandmother’s house. Between the local library and grandma’s house, I chose the house because there’s always something to snack while I read my books or listen to stories or most importantly watch cartoons (as kid, not so anymore).
A park near my house that had a outdoor kitchen and portico….it was peaceful and no one actually used it so a great place to be Queen.
my favorite childhood place was my aunts house. my parents couldnt afford to send me to camp so my aunt created a camp for me and my cousins at her house.
My friend Karla’s house, ’cause they had a pool. Thanks for the great giveaway!
My backyard. Climbing trees or playing on the swing set.
I loved hiding behind my headboard.
Cape Cod. We were more free there than anywhere else.
I loved my family pool. When the weather was warm, I could swim for hours. When it was cold, it was a vast ocean for boats…
I loved the barn. That’s where the horse was :)
I loved being in my room – it was my own little world.
I used to climb out my bedroom window onto the roof and read leaning up against the chimney. It was also a nice place to watch the world without ever being seen.
A partition in a dance studio I went to– I would hide back there and write in my diary. I was a big diary-writer ;-)
Porch outside if bedroom for me.
Mine was the mimosa tree in my front yard. I used to climb it and hang out up there, sometimes even fall asleep in It’s branches and once fell off knocking the breath outta myself lol! But I loved that tree.
My favorite childhood place was in the woods on the side of my house. I had many hideaways there.
I loved my playhouse!! :)

My favorite place was my dad’s favorite chair after he went to sleep. It was still warm from him and I would stay up late reading books.
Mine was my closet, too! I made a nest in the corner of my walk-in with all of my stuffed animals and played with my toys or read my books or even played my playstation on the tiny old TV I’d nicked from the garage and hidden behind all my dresses. :)
My favorite place was at my grandparents’ house. They lived out in the country where it was nice and quiet.
Ahhh, beanbag chairs! I remember them well. Oh, the books I read while being cocooned in that pseudo leather comfort. It didn’t matter where it was located as long as the door had a lock to keep my annoying sister OUT. My favorite place back in the day? My bright blue beanbag chair…with a book.
My favorite place was our club house “girls only”
My favorite spot as a child was my room, with the door closed.
I love the closet under our stairs.
There was a row of hedges in the front of my house . The space was just wide enough to hide. I could sit there (criss/cross applesauce) undiscovered, undisturbed, and unbugged (this was in the days before the DDT ban).
Please enter me in the giveaway. Thanks.
My favorite place was my bedroom – it was neqar a tin roof addition and I loved when it rained. My bed was in an alcove, somewhat separated from my sisters’ beds, so it felt somewhat secluded and private – great for reading or listneing to music.
My favorite place was my bedroom. While my sisters had to share, I had my room all to myself. I loved being alone with my books, stuffed animals and cassettes. :)
this little hiding spot in my friend’s house’s attic!
Sitting in my room with my favorite pillow and blanket while reading.
My grandparent’s farm. The owned over 600 acres of land that we used to roam when we were kids.
The corner of my bedroom. I had a butterfly chair and a throw. I would read and or listen to music.
The bathroom. It was where nobody would come in and bug me ;)
Mine was the bedroom when my sister wasn’t in it.
My basement toy room. Totally awesome!
My favorite place was my friend Linda’s house.
Best place for reading was the space between my bed and the wall — just narrow enough for a nightstand and just the right amount of privacy. It was perfect for hiding and reading (or reading and hiding).
I loved my bedroom!
I had a double decker tree house that my brothers built. LOVED it so much!!
I liked my friend’s attic bedroom…it was like a cool hideaway.
The woods behind my grandma’s home

The weeping willow tree in my backyard!

My favorite childhood place was a corner in our yard that was sort of secluded.
My favorite was my treehouse.
