You don’t often find a romance novel blurbed by Hilary Mantel, but I clicked on the link for Naoise Dolan’s EXCITING TIMES (about which I knew nothing, but the toothbrushes on the cover intrigued me), and Mantel’s positive endorsement was the first one listed. OTOH, it’s quite expensive, so this may be a library loan for me.
Also, Mary Balogh must be republishing some of her earlier works. I remember reading THE OBEDIENT BRIDE in the late 1980s when I was just coming back to reading romance after getting totally burnt out on bodice rippers. I was surprised by the on-page sex (unusual in Regencies at the time) and the fact that the hero kept visiting his mistress after he married the heroine. It’s not a bad book, but I think Balogh’s style has certainly changed in the 30+ years since it was published.
Calamity Jane also is out this week. It is written by the same authors of Lady Jane and Plain Jane.
@DiscoDollyDeb and @Jane: Are you sure Exciting Times is a romance? The blurb describes it as “heartbreakingly raw” as well as “dryly funny.”
@Janine: Perhaps not. Which might explain how Hilary Mantel was persuaded to blurb it! Lol
