The Helen Hoang book isn’t due out until May.
What Helen Hoang book? *looks around innocently*
Sweet baby Jesus, the cover for ANTON is unbelievable. I couldn’t tell you what’s in the rest of the list, I’ve possibly scrambled some brain cells, but I am here for that cover (even though they may have removed part of his lower spine). Thank you, Jane. I’ll see myself out after one-clicking.
@Darlynne: Darlynne, your comment made me laugh! I don’t read a lot of m/f anymore, but here’s me one-clicking just for you.
Darlynne this cover truly is something else :-).
I am counting on Jayne to review The Secret Life of Mac.
I wonder who is the photographer hmmm :).
@Darlynne: I had a similar reaction Darlynne!
@Darlynne: Seriously. That cover ought to be a poster.
I think the cover of ANTON is an outlier and soon we’ll be seeing more naked butts on romance covers (not that I’m complaining or anything). We seem to have reached the peak of six-pack/eight-pack abs, V-channels, and bulging biceps (or what I like to call “fetishization of the male torso”), so we need a new body part…and, what’d ya know, butts it is.
/it’s a great cover, but I’m totally there for the 27 TRUTHS, FLARE UP, and ROUGHNECK guys. I must go to work on my “reverse harem” fan-fic.
@Susan: At $7.99 I’m going to wait until there’s a sale.
@Kaetrin: Yup, I thought of that, too. So out of character for me. I have tried to figure out why my response was so visceral and profound. I *think* it’s because there is so much power in that body as it’s posed and–completely winging it here–so much humility and control. I bought the book entirely for the cover, also out of character for me.
@Eliza: I hope it’s not a disappointment, but we’ll always have that cover.
We need a “Covers that got a visceral reaction from us” open thread!
@DiscoDollyDeb: But in a good way, right? There’s enough bad stuff to go around out there, maybe that’s another reason this one seems so different. I like your idea.
@Darlynne: Oh yes! I don’t mean Cover Snark—which can be fun, but that’s not what I meant. I mean an open thread about covers that speak to us on some level and to share our ideas about what makes them so appealing. I really like what you wrote above about what it was in that ANTON cover that you found so wonderful.
@Darlynne: LOL! I at least read the blurb first but I bought it too. It was worth it for the cover alone frankly. It’s one of the best ones since the first Jaci Burton Play by Play book I reckon.
@Kaetrin: Full disclosure: I did read the sample, but unless it was horrid, I would have bought anyway.
Now that I’ve read the book *in one night the day I bought it* that picture is Anton. I’m conflicted about my rating, currently it’s a B+, and will read it again with closer attention. I liked the characters immensely.
@DiscoDollyDeb: Jane, what do you think of DiscoDollyDeb’s idea? Since Kaetrin mentioned the Jaci Burton book, maybe that would be a fun place to start?
@Darlynne: So like a cover thread? Would it be monthly? I don’t mind if you use the comments of the new releases to remark on covers or do you want to recommend covers and have me post them? I’m open to anything.
@Jane: Uh, anyone? @DiscoDollyDeb: Thoughts? Or help?
Speaking for myself, I might try writing something about the ANTON cover, tying it in with a book review and sending that to you, Jane? See if it works? Yeah, no anxiety on my part here. When I’m in my dotage (like, next week) I’ll look back at this cover and remember it as the fork in my road.
I was just thinking of it as a one-time thing—during the monthly readers open thread perhaps—where we link to a book (or books) that have covers that absolutely grabbed us and we discuss why they did: smoking hot cover model, unexpected pop of color, composition, unusual props, interesting tattoos, etc. I admit that I have purchased a few books based entirely on my response to the covers—with varying levels of success.
@DiscoDollyDeb: I enjoy discussing book covers; great idea! I’m also looking forward to Darlynne’s post / review.
I have only ever bought one book *solely* on the basis of the cover (I had no interest whatsoever in the contents). It was not a romance, or a novel at all. I bought it in print, and this was the cover that sold me.
Interesting thread.
Hmm, I can’t recall buying a book solely for the cover in recent years but it would be fun to read submissions from readers who did buy books based on the cover and then let us know if the story was good or not.
@Darlynne: I’m even more excited to read it now! Thank you!!
