Happy Turkey Day
My brother in law serves steak and lobster instead of turkey to his family. I’m not certain how the non traditional meal started becoming a tradition but I suspect it’s because he’s just not the biggest fan of turkey. Me? I could go either way but my family is traditionalists.
Today I’m responsible for cooking the turkey. It’s been my role for the last two years ever since I deep sixed the brined turkey process. It’s not that the brined turkey isn’t delicious but it’s just too damn much work.
My current favorite recipe is Tom Colicchio’s Herb Butter Turkey recipe. The key to this recipe is two fold: (1) copious amounts of butter stuffed inside the cavity and between the skin and the breast and (2) regular basting of the turkey in a broth.
The turkey and gravy that you get from this recipe is outstanding. Thanksgiving has sordid beginnings but the concept of taking a day out of our busy life to be thankful is an important one.
I have a lot to be thankful for. Despite the, um, challenges 2014 has presented, it’s also been a wonderful year. I’ve read some great books, made new friends, and was treated to an overwhelming show of how amazing the community can be. I’m grateful I have this opportunity to blog and share a love of romance books with my fellow readers.
I’m thankful for the awesome reviewers on the blog and the equally wonderful commenters. I appreciate my fellow bloggers, the people who interact with me on Twitter and Facebook, and finally (but not last) the authors who write the books that keep me entertained.
We may have our differences but we are all bound together by our love of the genre. We may not all love the same books, but we all adore reading.
We have more in common than we have differences. We come from all over the world, celebrating our different traditions and holidays and meaningful moments. But at the core of everything, we are moved by stories of people falling in love and binding themselves into one unit.
I’m thankful for you. And that I have an eReader full of ebooks. What are you thankful for today?
I’m thankful that my parents, particularly my mother, encouraged my love of reading when I was young. I’m thankful for the wonderful books I’ve read (and many reread) over the years. I’m thankful I get to hang out online with a great group of people and discuss books. And that the discussion is not “why are you wasting your time on those books. I’m thankful for my family.
And like Jane, I’m thankful for my eReader full of ebooks. And the new-to-me authors I’ve yet to enjoy as well as the favorites I’ve been enjoying for years.
It’s been a rough year, but I have lots to be thankful for. Sometimes I have to actively go thru the list to remind myself, but, hey, I do actually have enough items to make a list so that’s a plus. Books are a source of enjoyment and escape for me, so I truly appreciate DA, where I can share, rejoice, commiserate, learn, buy, etc. (Well, the buy part, maybe not so much a blessing all the time. :-) )
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Definitely thankful for my family. My parents are getting up there, but they are still with us and that’s a wonderful thing.
My reader is overflowing and my iPod has enough music to last me for years. Life is good.
I am thankful for my wonderful family and my health. But, I am also thankful for the fantastic group of ladies (I call them sisters even though we are not related) I work with who make coming to work more like party and less like a job. I am also incredibly thankful for all the people (like yourself) who come together and talk about what is dear to my heart…books and stories and the places they take us. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
I am thankful for health – mine and that of my family including my four legged ones. I am thankful for this place where we can discuss the books we love. I’m thankful for all my fellow bloggers without whom this blog would be the worse. I’m thankful I have a job in RL. But most of all, I’m thankful there are lots of relatives to cook the turkey so I don’t have to! Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
I’m thankful for my family – and for the years of hard work and commitment that we’ve put into building a strong sense of family and strong traditions.
I’m thankful for DA and the romance community. I was laid off this year and this is the one part of my life that’s not been taken over by networking and job search stuff. It’s nice to be able to take a break and talk books with my online buddies (who don’t know or care about my elevator speech). And I’m thankful that I owned my taste in reading and that let me find my people in Romancelandia.
I’m grateful for school libraries and public libraries and every librarian who provided me refuge when I was growing up. And to the authors and publishers who created all those books that helped me grow up.
And I’m thankful that my parents read to me, and instilled a love of reading and learning, and that my nieces and nephews are growing up with books and reading.
And I’m thankful for this thread.
I know I am repeating what everybody else said but of course I am grateful for the health and for the family and for this amazing community which introduced me to so many fantastic books and to blog owners who gave me a chance to review here. Happy Thanksgiving!
It’s been a seriously bad year, what with many months of unemployment, as well as losses amongst family and friends. But the one bright spot, and what I’m most thankful for, is the safe arrival of my wonderful twin nephews after being longed for and dreamed of for years and years by my sister and brother-in-law. While the sleep deprivation is occasionally crazy-making, they are so worth it.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
I thankful for my good health and the health of loved ones. I am also thankful to this site and the other romance blogs I frequent. This has probably been the most hectic year of my life (nephews little family moved in for short term stay) and without the romance community I wouldn’t know anything about books.
I’m thankful for the ability of books to get me through some tough times. There’s nothing quite like escaping to another world and forgetting your own sorrows. I’m also thankful for Romance review sites, who always give me a new book to try.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I’m thankful for this place, where reading the comments is ALWAYS a good idea, and the wonderful reviews/editorials/deals you all write for us. You’ve touched my life in so many ways!
Happy Turkey Day, US-ians, better late than never <3
I’m thankful for writers with great imaginations and for readers who steer me to books I’ll like and away from books I wouldn’t like and especially for readers with a romance sensibility I can ask for opinions. I’m also thankful for three days of vacation where I don’t have to leave the house.
I’m thankful for so many things, but what I’m going to say here is: Thank you, Jane, and all the others who contribute and comment here, for creating this always interesting, diverse, and fun place for all of us. I always enjoy the time I spend here!
Well, this made me tear up a little.
@Lindsay: Nicely put, Lindsay!
I’m thankful that I’m starting to make peace with the changes middle age brings. I’m thankful that we have a full house for Thanksgiving… albeit a bit overly full… despite the sad loss this year of the guest we’ve been hosting since college. I’m thankful for the romance community, which always remains wonderful even as the industry gets ugly and the places we inhabit change. And as always. I’m thankful for the MST3K Turkey Day marathon.
I’m grateful for loving family and good friends, for my health, for a roof over my head and food on the table, and for many good books to read.
Happy Thanksgiving!
@willaful: “And as always. I’m thankful for the MST3K Turkey Day marathon.”
God, yes!
It’s been a hard year in many ways and yet has had some of the highest highs yet.
I’m thankful for family, and most especially a child that was born to another who had reasons of her own for not being a mother and blessed my life so I could mother this amazing child. She changes my world daily.
And I’m thankful to this community who opens my eyes to new authors and genres, makes me feel not so alone for liking what I like and sometimes frustrates me but always keeps me involved.
And to Dear Author for not just touching my life (daily) as a reader but also for giving me moments as a writer that made huge impacts in my craft. Your First Page helps me craft, both in submitting my own and reading others. Your reviews open my eyes to issues that readers have. You have always been welcoming to not just readers but also reader/writers and I’m thankful.
I’m thankful for family and friends, blogs and books, for being alive, and for too many other things to list. Thank you to my fellow bloggers here at DA, and for the DA community. You guys are wonderful.
I’m thankful for librarians. And libraries. Sending wishes that they will not need to fight against budget cuts, again.
