Macmillan Finalizes E-book Settlement, Will Pay $26 Million – Macmillan has agreed to pay $20 million toward the refund pool along with attorneys’ fees and $1000 to the named plaintiffs as a “service award”. The settlement will be up for approval after a period of public comment. Publishers Weekly
Why Still So Few Use Condoms – David Masciotra – We want our characters to be smart and safe and that means condom usage. But condoms are not romantic so we’ve resorted to the mid coitus “I’m safe, are you safe” exchange. While frustrating (and dangerous) this type of exchange may be far more believable than actual condom usage.
Despite widespread HIV awareness campaigns and knowledge about condoms, 50 percent of gay men do not use them, and the HIV rate among gay men is on the rise because of it. Mark S. King, an award winning author and leading advocate for AIDS awareness in the gay community, who is also gay and HIV positive, recently gave a perfect summary of the motivation behind unprotected sex: “We keep talking about barebacking as if it’s some kind of psychosis, when really all it is is men behaving naturally.”
Bill Gates is asking people not only why they don’t use a condom but how to improve the condom so that its usage is not only sexy but feels good. Come on science. I know you can do it. The Atlantic

Not about condoms, but Slut Shaming driving SDT rates up. I think there’s something to the idea–young women may avoid seeking help, getting/carrying contraceptives in order not to be considered promiscuous/sluts.
