GIVEAWAY: What’s Next for Berkley
NOTE: This post will close it’s comments tonight at 8 PM CST and the winners will be posted in the A.M. Jane
I have SEVENTEEN Berkley ARCs of titles scheduled to be published in March, April and May including NYT bestselling authors like Christine Feehan and Lora Leigh. Cindy Hwang, executive editor of Berkley, has donated these books to giveaway to highlight some of their spring titles. Play the slideshow (there is a 4 sec delay) or click through the covers and then take a look at the highlights below. Drop a note in the comments with the title of three books you would like and anything else you think Berkley should know. Winners will be picked at random. I will note that Hard and Fast by Erin McCarthy has been read once (by me). It’s hysterical and contains the following line “You are the hottest biscuit this side of the gravy boat.”
****
This spring, Berkley has some really fabulous romances coming up, and it was especially hard to narrow down the list to just two highlights per month. So I cheated a bit and included three books in May. But there are many other exciting Berkley romances not mentioned here, so to find out about all the other current and upcoming books, check out www.berkleyjoveauthors.com.
MARCH
- Known for her bestselling Psy-Changeling series, Nalini Singh has written a new paranormal series, this time featuring vampires and angels. It’s darker and even edgier than her Psy-Changeling series, and I think of it as a bit of a hybrid between paranormal romance and urban fantasy, so the category on the spine is Urban Fantasy Romance–a first for Berkley. You may think that you’ve already read every possible version possible of vampires–with ANGELS’ BLOOD, I guarantee that Nalini brings a real freshness to her world, a new twist that readers wouldn’t have read before. Plus, it has all the sexual tension and passionate romance that readers have come to expect from Nalini. All that and one of the sexiest heroes ever (Raphael is definitely on my personal top 5 list)!
- Robin Schone is no stranger to romance readers–she’s been one of the most innovative and popular names in erotic romance for years–a true groundbreaker. Now, she makes her Berkley debut with CRY FOR PASSION. Set in Victorian London, CRY FOR PASSION is sexy, intense, complex, and emotional–vintage Schone. Berkley also has a special bonus for e-book readers–a free e-book of her previous historical romance, SCANDALOUS LOVERS, is bundled with the e-book of CRY FOR PASSION, so e-book readers will get a great two-fer!
APRIL
- Jory Strong made her name writing erotic romance e-books for Ellora’s Cave, and she makes her Berkley debut with GHOSTLAND, a fascinating blend of urban fantasy and sexy paranormal romance–the second Berkley title that is categorized Urban Fantasy Romance. GHOSTLAND is set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by plague and war, and where paranormals have come out of hiding, and where society is sharply divided along paranormal lines. A struggle for power among the ruling classes may allow the Djinns to emerge from their self-imposed exile to reclaim their rightful place in the world. Jory has created a fascinating, complex world rich with mythology, and grounded it with a fabulous romance as well.
- Known for her popular military-set category romances, DEFENDER is the first in Catherine Mann’s fabulous "Dark Ops Defenders" series-‘sexy romances featuring an elite squadron of fighter pilots who will do anything for their country-or their women! When a USO boat goes down in flames, test pilot Jimmy Gage pulls a scantily clad Chloe Nelson out of the shark-filled Mediterranean. Although she is grateful and he’s hot as the fire that took the boat down, the last thing Chloe needs is a jet-jock to be her bodyguard-‘until she inadvertently finds herself closer to Gage than she ever expected, and side by side in a dangerous mission. DEFENDER will be followed by HOTSHOT in May 2009, and RENEGADE in Jan 2010.
MAY
- Erin McCarthy returns to the stock car racing world with HARD AND FAST, the follow-up to FLAT-OUT SEXY. And if it’s possible, HARD AND FAST is even funnier than FLAT-OUT SEXY. Erin is fabulous combining smart and sexy with laugh-out-loud funny, and there were moments in HARD AND FAST I literally could not stop laughing. The heroine, Imogen, is a character very close to my heart (I want to be Imogen when I grow up!), and her romance with race car driver Ty is bone-meltingly sensual. One of my favorite moments in the book is the camping scene–I’ll just say I have a similar wardrobe to Imogen, and also learned the hard way that it’s not the most appropriate wardrobe for hiking.
- SEA LORD by Virginia Kantra is the third book in the Children of the Sea series, which is her selkie paranormal romance series. In case you don’t know, selkies are half-human, half-seal–on land, they’re human but transform to seals in the water–as long as they still have their pelt. Take away their pelt, and you take away their ability to transform. SEA LORD is the story of Lucy Hunter and Conn ap Llyr, the selkie prince, and Virginia doesn’t disappoint. Virginia’s selkies are some of the most fascinating paranormal creatures around, and I love how she develops the selkies through their relationships (romantic and otherwise) with humans in her books. Lucy and Conn’s romance is both epic and wonderfully intimate, and SEA LORD really delivers–both on the emotional front, and on the action front. The stakes are high in SEA LORD, and readers will feel every moment.
- From bestselling Deirdre Martin, best known for her hockey romances, comes WITH A TWIST. It’s the first in Martin’s fabulous new series about a large, loving Irish American family named the O’Briens who own the Wild Hart, a pub in the heart of New York City. Readers will love the Irish flair and charming cast of characters as they watch newspaper reporter Quinn O’Brien fall in love with Natalie Bocuse, the sister of the heroine in JUST A TASTE. They will also be pleased with surprise appearances from some of the heroes of Martin’s hockey books.
Cindy Hwang is the executive editor of Berkley who is actively seeking fresh voices in romance. In her spare time, she enjoys Bravo Reality TV and cinema remakes of comic books.

Berkley really seems to do a superior job of editing. Authors that have written for other houses in the past seem to have a stronger voice when at Berkley.

Nauti Intentions by Lora Leigh

I really would like to see Berkley offer books in an eBook format. I read so much and travel a great deal for work. It is much easier to load twenty books on my eReader than to pack and tote 20 paperbacks or hardback novels with me. As a consumer, I would purchase more books from Berkley in an eFormat and expand my interest to additional authors.
Wow, what a great giveaway – there are so many books by authors I really like and some, by authors I don’t know seem really intriguing. A wealth of choice, but, I’d love to receive the books by:
Virginia Kantra, Julie James and Erin McCarthy.
If I am chosen, I would love to have:
1. Riding on Instinct
2. Hard and Fast
3. Rewriting Monday.
They all sound right up my alley.

I was a little confused about if our 3 choices had to come from the 17 books in the graphic, or if we could include a choice from the descriptions. So if Angel’s Blood doesn’t count, I’d swap in Hard and Fast.

It’s so hard to choose, but the three I’d like to win are:
Hard and Fast by Erin McCarthy
Burning Wild by Christine Feehan
Nauti Intentions by Lora Leigh
Berkley and Cindy Hwang have again shown that they are publishers who take every opportunity to listen to what their readers have to say. This giveaway is a great idea to generate interest in upcoming books and for them to guage what really gets their audience ticking (you really have to think hard to pick three books out of that list! But the truth is if we were to have to buy the books … we are likely to choose around three).
I think Berkley is also on its way to build audience loyalty, to the publishing house for consistently choosing some of the best authors in the genre out there. There is a lot of choice out there, and I don’t know if I am the only one or if most people will flick their eyes to see who published a book, before I even read the blurb!
Listing out all their new titles like this really raises awareness that they have something for everyone. I’m impressed, eventhough I am partial to paranormal.
Their cover art is exceptional and moving fast away from the cheesy covers that have plagued romance novels and prevented them from being taken out into public (seriously, the publishers who created an ‘adult cover’ for Harry Potter knew what they were about).
Regarding the paranormal titles that Berkley has out there, I have to first qualify that I am traditionally more a fantasy/sci-fi reader, who has been driven through sheer desperation to search for fresh world building and views outside of that genre. My search has seen me foraging in YA territory (some of the best and most original fantasy is in this category) and more recently, I’ve been giving paranormal romance a go. I did read historical romances when I was younger, but eventually got bored by the eternal sameness.
I am perhaps a little less impressed by the current level of the world building in romance novels than the average. I read reviews praising the world building to the skies and I am often still dissatisfied when I actually do read the books. I think it still has quite a way to go before it reaches the levels seen in the pure fantasy/sci-fi genre. I suppose that is inevitable if a book is classed as romance – and I am aware there is a backlash from readers who think the romance is sacrificed for world building.
I am interested to see the publishers pushing sub-genres like the two urban fantasy titles mentioned here. This is something I will be watching with interest. Another neglected sub-genre is sci-fi or novels emphasising technology levels. There is a lot out there currently about shape-shifters, and other mythical creatures which I do enjoy, but technology can be as/more fascinating as elves or people turning into tigers. Would love to see someone make it sexy! ;P Sci-fi is often targeted at a male audience (the romance is often very dry and yawn) and I am sure geek girls out there would love to read about technology and great love stories against that setting.
Another thought is that a fantasy of epic proportions might be nice … you know, sort of like what they used to do with medieval romances, only populated with otherworldly creatures, where you get a sense of the length and breadth of the created world. But again, perhaps a romance novel (which focusses on the very intimate relationship between two people) is not the right vehicle for that. The series that comes to mind is Jaqueline Carey’s Kushiel books, but then, that is classed as fantasy (even though there is some pretty hot sex in there).
Another gripe I have about the current romances out there – what’s with the grisly murders, gore, serial killers and mental cases out there? In romance novels no less. I know the whole death heightens awareness of life (a.k.a. hot sex) connection, but I find it hard to avoid the blood splatters on the wall as I navigate in the bucolic waters of romance. It really spoils it for me (it is one of the reasons why I never bought into the Psy/Changeling books, though I thought that was a sure ringer for me). I begin to think that women are far more violent and bloodthirsty than men (considering the kinds of death I have to read in sci-fi/fantasy – are are present but they are not so … gross).
Anyway, enough of me yammering on, my three choices:
#1 Ghostland – Jory Strong (the cover is so good, I’m not entirely certain I was not influenced by it; it reminds me of Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy ‘Neverwhere’)
#2 The Mage – Jean Johnson
#3 Sea Lord – Virginia Kantra
I will probably also read Angels’ Blood, the excerpt on the author’s website looked very good and quite different from the Psy/Changeling books, though it did make me think of Anita Blake and Sharon Shinn’s ‘Archangel’.
Angel’s Blood – Nalini Singh
Ghostland – Jory Strong
Defender – Catherine Mann
I’m with Chenebe, I too come from a fantasy/Sci-fi reading background, read historical got a bit board, found paranormals but wish the world building was a little deeper.
Saying that though, I really like the Psy/Changling series
Catherine Mann, Erin McCarthy, Jodi Thomas.
Wow, what a selection.
1. Lora Leigh’s Nauti Intentions, because, hey, who can resist any of Lora’s super alpha heroes? :) Seriously can’t wait for Alex’s story!
2. Erin McCarthy’s Hard and Fast. She always has the fantastic ability to make her readers laugh and fall in love with everyone of her books.
3. Christine Feehan’s Burning Wild. Read the excerpt at the end of Murder Game and I’m excited to see how this book will pan out.
It looks like lots of good books coming out this spring.
