Chalice is one of my very favourite books. It’s a slow, measured rural fantasy about a young woman trying the hardest she can to hold everything together in a land ruled by tradition, and feeling utterly inadequate and unprepared for the task. If you’ve read any other McKinley and are familiar with her meandering writing style, I think this is the best of her books published in the last ten years. I reread it every year or two and always feel happy and relaxed while immersed in Mirasol’s demesne.
