DAILY DEALS: Unusual setting, boss/secretary trope, a book about food and football
Sleeping with the Boss by Marissa Clarke $ 0.99
From the Jacket Copy:
For the last five years, bookish Claire Maddox has been living for the dying. Now that her stint as caretaker is over, she’s off to see the world. She needs quick cash first, so a temp job at Anderson Auctions seems perfect, especially with the unexpected benefits, including the hottest man she’s ever laid eyes–or hands–on.
Former Marine William Anderson has been burned one time too many. His military training makes him the perfect man to flush out the spy undercutting his family business, but no amount training can prepare him for the kind of undercover work he’ll have to do when the sexy new temp is implicated. Desire lands them in bed… but duty may cost him his heart.
Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson $ 2.99
From the Jacket Copy:
It’s Carnival time and the Caribbean-colonized planet of Toussaint is celebrating with music, dance, and pageantry. Masked “Midnight Robbers” waylay revelers with brandished weapons and spellbinding words. To young Tan-Tan, the Robber Queen is simply a favorite costume to wear at the festival-until her power-corrupted father commits an unforgiveable crime.
Suddenly, both father and daughter are thrust into the brutal world of New Half-Way Tree. Here monstrous creatures from folklore are real, and the humans are violent outcasts in the wilds. Tan-Tan must reach into the heart of myth and become the Robber Queen herself. For only the Robber Queen’s legendary powers can save her life . . . and set her free.
Written on My Heart by Cole Gibsen $ 0.99
From the Jacket Copy:
A new adult romance from Entangled’s Embrace imprint…
Some words last forever…
It’s been six months since Ashlyn Daniels was kicked out of her home. Six months since she stood up to her abusive stepfather and got a busted rib-and seeing all her things set ablaze in a backyard bonfire-for her trouble. Never going back. She doesn’t need trouble…especially if trouble is tattoo artist Lane Garrett, who’s six-feet-plus of tattooed hotness and a complete ass.
Lane has spent the last decade fighting to support his family. To protect them. There’s no room for romance, even with a fragile (yet amusingly feisty) stunner…even if she somehow manages to invade his world and his heart.
But while some secrets are as visible as ink on the skin, others must remain hidden at all costs…
Nowhere but Home by Liza Palmer $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
Bestselling author Liza Palmer carries readers to North Star, Texas, in the amusing and poignant Nowhere But Home.
After Queenie Wake is dismissed from her restaurant job, she returns to North Star to cook meals for death row inmates.
Hopeful that the bad memories of her late mother and promiscuous sister (now the mother of the captain of the high school football team) have been forgotten by the locals, Queenie discovers that some people can’t be forgotten—heartbreaker Everett Coburn—her old high-school sweetheart.
When secrets from the past emerge, will Queenie be able to stick by her family or will she leave home again?
Liz Palmer’s Nowhere But Home is a funny and touching story of food, football, and fooling around.
Midnight Robber is $9.99 at iBooks. Darn!
Nowhere But Home is NOT TO BE MISSED.
I’ve read and enjoyed all of Liza Palmer’s work and Nowhere But Home is one of her best. A heroine who finds her truth and realizes where she belongs while cooking last meals for prisoners on death row? Seriously? But it works. Queenie, her sister Merry Carole, and nephew Cal are such wounded but wonderful characters that you feel their pain and share their triumphs. Small town Texas life is presented with both flaws and benefits, and the cooking is seamlessly integrated into the plot (I hate it when novels that include recipes feel like they can’t make up their mind if they want to tell a story or serve as a cookbook). Only the romance falls short; IIRC the heroine deserves someone better.
Finding Master Right by LA Witt is $2.49 (half off) at ARe.
This is one of my favorites by L A Witt. M/M, bdsm erotic romance, friends to lovers at a leather convention. It’s definitely not for everyone – besides the bdsm, both heroes do scenes / have sex with other partners before they finally get together. And there is a fair amount of mental lusting / whining – but it didn’t bother me in this story.
@Angie: I was going to buy NBH just because of that cover, but it’s nice to know the inside is just as good.
