I can’t help but feel that I fell for a bait and switch. I went into this expecting a traditional fantasy but instead got a post-apocalyptic fantasy masquerading as a traditional fantasy. Given how badly the post-apocalyptic subgenre has been working for me lately, this cost the book several points. I had a difficult time connecting with either Rachel or Logan, feeling that they made stupid decisions for the sake of plot more often than not.
This book is a set up for a trilogy (and a love triangle). Definitely buyer beware.

I’m glad Dessen is moving away from the romance trope. I love her books but I think it’s great that she is focusing on friendships more because, lets be honest, friends consumes 90% of a teens thoughts growing up.
*raises hand* I’ve read Defiance and…I really disliked it. I was with Jia so much on the criticism. The world attempts to tackle female oppression, yet the negative is that the book ends up supporting the notion that women are idiots. The heroine’s PoV is all “I’m awesome and badass because my dad taught me to be, and I’m gonna save him and be a hero!” The hero’s PoV counteracts that with, “Every time she tries to sneak around, she fails and is about to get killed. She does a whole bunch of stupid shit. I need to save her and be the real hero.” Needless to say, I read the whole thing because I wanted to know if it would get better for me, and it never really did. YMMV.
I used to flove Dessen, I mean fan-gurl floved. But I did not like “What Happened to Goodbye.” For me, it’s not about the romance (or lack thereof), but the emphasis on the town she’s created. It feels…stifling. I would love to see one of the heroines actually AT the fictional “U,” just to get out of that seaside town.
But I did buy her latest that came out a few weeks ago because I just can’t quit her. Yet.

I bought 5 books from the Entangled sale, including Talking Dirty with the CEO. Like you, Jane, I’m really hoping it’s good; when I read the blurb, I had to have it :-)
I liked Talking Dirty w/the CEO. Of course I bought it at full price. If I’m remembering, it’s kind of short but pretty good.
I bought the Talking Dirty book today and read it in one sitting. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely worth $0.99. Only issue: it is a Topaz file (I think), and I haven’t figured out how to deal with the DRM on those, so I had to read it on my laptop instead of my Nook.
What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen is showing up as $8.89 for me at amazon which is the cheapest I saw at any of the links you posted. Did the sale already end?
And Talking Dirty with the CEO is $2.99 at amazon for me but $0.99 at B&N; I reported the lower price to amazon so hopefully they’ll lower it? (Unless this sale is also already over?)
