Daily Deals: Two words (okay four) dirty talker and geek girl
What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. $ 2.99
From the Jacket Copy:
Since her parents’ bitter divorce, Mclean and her dad, a restaurant consultant, have been on the move – four towns in two years. Estranged from her mother and her mother’s new family, Mclean has followed her dad in leaving the unhappy past behind. And each new place gives her a chance to try out a new persona: from cheerleader to drama diva. But now, for the first time, Mclean discovers a desire to stay in one place and just be herself – whoever that is. Perhaps her neighbor Dave, an academic superstar trying to be just a regular guy, can help her find out. Combining Sarah Dessen’s trademark graceful writing, great characters, and compelling storytelling, What Happened to Goodbye is irresistible reading.

Defiance by C.J. Redwine. $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
Defiance by C. J. Redwine is rich postapocalyptic YA fantasy perfect for fans of Graceling and Tamora Pierce.
While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.
When Rachel’s father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city’s brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father’s apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.
As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.
I can’t help but feel that I fell for a bait and switch. I went into this expecting a traditional fantasy but instead got a post-apocalyptic fantasy masquerading as a traditional fantasy. Given how badly the post-apocalyptic subgenre has been working for me lately, this cost the book several points. I had a difficult time connecting with either Rachel or Logan, feeling that they made stupid decisions for the sake of plot more often than not.
This book is a set up for a trilogy (and a love triangle). Definitely buyer beware.

Chasing Justice by Danielle Stewart. $ Free.
From the Jacket Copy:
Piper Anderson has been given a fresh start in the picturesque town of Edenville, North Carolina. But her plans of settling into a normal life are derailed when she witnesses a prominent judge in her community committing a violent assault. Running from her own past and fueled by a passion to make the judge answer for his crimes, Piper is forced to decide if she’ll play by the rules or achieve justice in her own way.
Complicating things further, Piper finds herself fighting a powerful attraction to rookie cop, Bobby Wright. Although she’s increasingly enamored with Bobby, his staunch belief in the justice system is in stark contrast to her own. She may not share his opinions about the effectiveness of the law, but she certainly can’t deny how safe she feels when she’s in his arms or how every kiss leaves her desperate for more.
For Piper, the idea of finally living an ordinary life with a man to love is tempting. However, fate keeps placing the judge, quite literally, in her path. Will she decide the only way to win is to be as wicked as the judge, but with righteous intentions? And more importantly, will Bobby choose to let her go, or follow her as she crosses the line and takes justice into her own hands?
I’m glad Dessen is moving away from the romance trope. I love her books but I think it’s great that she is focusing on friendships more because, lets be honest, friends consumes 90% of a teens thoughts growing up.
*raises hand* I’ve read Defiance and…I really disliked it. I was with Jia so much on the criticism. The world attempts to tackle female oppression, yet the negative is that the book ends up supporting the notion that women are idiots. The heroine’s PoV is all “I’m awesome and badass because my dad taught me to be, and I’m gonna save him and be a hero!” The hero’s PoV counteracts that with, “Every time she tries to sneak around, she fails and is about to get killed. She does a whole bunch of stupid shit. I need to save her and be the real hero.” Needless to say, I read the whole thing because I wanted to know if it would get better for me, and it never really did. YMMV.
I used to flove Dessen, I mean fan-gurl floved. But I did not like “What Happened to Goodbye.” For me, it’s not about the romance (or lack thereof), but the emphasis on the town she’s created. It feels…stifling. I would love to see one of the heroines actually AT the fictional “U,” just to get out of that seaside town.
But I did buy her latest that came out a few weeks ago because I just can’t quit her. Yet.
@Sarah:
Speak for yourself! :P I was only a teen a few years ago and sad to say, most of my thoughts were of boys and crushes. >_> Take that how you will.
I bought 5 books from the Entangled sale, including Talking Dirty with the CEO. Like you, Jane, I’m really hoping it’s good; when I read the blurb, I had to have it :-)
I liked Talking Dirty w/the CEO. Of course I bought it at full price. If I’m remembering, it’s kind of short but pretty good.
I bought the Talking Dirty book today and read it in one sitting. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely worth $0.99. Only issue: it is a Topaz file (I think), and I haven’t figured out how to deal with the DRM on those, so I had to read it on my laptop instead of my Nook.
What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen is showing up as $8.89 for me at amazon which is the cheapest I saw at any of the links you posted. Did the sale already end?
And Talking Dirty with the CEO is $2.99 at amazon for me but $0.99 at B&N; I reported the lower price to amazon so hopefully they’ll lower it? (Unless this sale is also already over?)
I hope I didn’t miss out on two awesome sounding sales!
@Anya: The Dessen was a one day sale. Not sure about the Entangled books. I saw several still at 99c.
@Jane: Darn! Well I bought the Talk Dirty book. And I added the Dessen book to my amazon cart since I use that to store books I’m interested in. Too bad I didn’t check my RSS feeds last :( Thanks for posting them!
