No one creates realms like New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans.
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
Mercy Thompson’s life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn’t exactly normal herself.
I wish I could find another UF series as amazing as Anne Bishop’s The Others series- those books are soo frickin’ good. Can’t wait for the next book!
Jane, thank you very much for the ‘ safe ‘ reassurance about the next Anne Bishop- I have been apprehensive about it. Now I can just enjoy the anticipation.
I love The Others series, as well, and completely agree about Anne Bishop’s incredible world-building. It’s so impressive how she made the inhabitants of the Courtyard so merciless and even brutal at times, but she still makes me want to live there (and go to Howling Good Reads :-)).
The Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, and The Others are three series that I’ll pay full price for in order to have the minute they come out. And, cheapskate that I now am, that’s saying a lot. The sale prices are a good way for new readers to dip their toes into 2 of these great series. (Gateway drugs!) The audio books for The Others are also good. (I haven’t listened to the Mercy Thompson ones so can’t vouch for them.)
I’ve stopped buying Patricia Briggs, and only borrow her books from my local library. Horrendous prices from the UK publishers for her eBooks ranging from NZ$13.99 to NZ$19.99. Moon Called is currently listed on Kobo for NZ$16.99. Night Broken (released nearly 2 years ago) is NZ$19.99. Even though I rarely buy from Amazon, I always check their prices. They aren’t much better and are still over the amount I am prepared to pay as I still have to purchase the UK edition. Thought I might try Anne Bishop as I haven’t read her, but the prices for her eBooks on Kobo are even worse!
@ShellBell: I cancelled pre-orders for three books I’d been looking forward to this year because of the prices. I’m passing on Karen Marie Moning’s Feverborn ($13.99), Anne Bishop’s Marked ($13.99) and Briggs’s Firetouched ($13.99).
If I could truly own ebooks, I wouldn’t hesitate. As things stand now, essentially publishers are demanding that I pay nearly $14 to lease their books, and I won’t do it. No, nope, un-unh.
I love The Others series, but I have seen a comment from one person who had their self harm issues triggered by it. So, proceed with caution if that an issue for you.
@Lostshadows: I never thought of that. Will add.
@Jane – read your comment re Sinful Desires. One-click. ;p
@Susan:
Totally agree. Those are the three series I actually buy full price on day one and don’t (too much) wince when they price drop a bit later. I console myself that my utter cheapness on the rest of my book buying subsidizes these. LOL.
“I’ve read ______ and am happy to report that it’s safe.”
That is why I visit this site.
I have always really liked the Mercy Thompson series but I could never get into the other series in that same world. It was actually too much of a romance for me.
Thanks a lot, Jane.
I bought Written in Red and just blew through it. And the next one. And I’m on the third…
My poor wallet…but happy reader…
I love the Others with a great passion. I agree, the eBook prices are way, way too high. I like them so much I bought the hardcovers used, so I am just going to buy the HC when the new one comes out. It’s more than the eBook, but at least it’s mine. I’m one of those people that read books from the library and buys the ones I really like, and this series is one of those, so I figure I’m just taking a shortcut. It’s _so_ different from the Dark Jewels series, and the Ephemera series–it amazes me that she can switch and create such different worlds. I hadn’t thought about the self-harm issues–I’m glad someone mentioned that. It’s a very intense part of the books.
Haven’t read Patricia Briggs–tried to get into the series but couldn’t. Sometimes it just takes a different try at a different time. (I think different is my word for this). Moning is library.
