DAILY DEALS: Three bundles and a contemporary
Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips $ 3.99
From the Jacket Copy:
New York Times bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips is back with a delightful novel filled with her sassy wit and dazzling charm
Deepest winter.
An isolated island off the coast of Maine.
A man. A woman.
Puppets. (Yes, puppets . . .)
And . . .
A mysterious house looming over the sea . . .
He’s a reclusive writer whose imagination creates chilling horror novels. She’s a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids’ puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill his characters with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill an audience with laughs. But she’s not laughing now.
Annie Hewitt has arrived on Peregrine Island in the middle of a snowstorm and at the end of her resources. She’s broke, dispirited, but not quite ready to give up. Her red suitcases hold the puppets she uses to make her living: sensible Dilly, spunky Scamp, and Leo, the baddest of bad guys. Her puppets, the romantic novels she loves, and a little bit of courage are all she has left.
Annie couldn’t be more ill prepared for what she finds when she reaches Moonraker Cottage or for the man who dwells in Harp House, the mysterious mansion that hovers above the cottage. When she was a teenager, he betrayed her in a way she can never forget or forgive. Now they’re trapped together on a frozen island along with a lonely widow, a mute little girl, and townspeople who don’t know how to mind their own business.
Is he the villain she remembers, or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes.
It’s going to be a long, hot winter.

Saving Grace (Book 1)
Grace Riley is on the run—from her past and from her fears. The victim of a violent rape at the hands of a rich politician’s son, she must “disappear” to escape his constant attempts to recapture her. Moving from cattle drive to cattle drive as a cook, she avoids her tormentor for nearly twenty years. When she discovers that the brother she gave up for adoption after their mother died in childbirth was orphaned at an early age, she is frantic to verify that he’s safe. She tracks him to a cattle ranch in Montana.
Widower Adam Morgan owns the Twin Springs ranch, but finds himself falling into a life of loneliness. Although he enjoys spending time with his grown daughter and the two men he rescued when they were living on the streets, he longs to meet a woman he can love. Living in the Montana territory where men greatly outnumber women makes finding a new wife difficult. Weary of working cattle, he is ready to make some changes in his life.
Grace falls ill on her journey, but she manages to make it to the Twin Springs ranch where her brother is supposed to be living. Adam takes her in, concerned for her health and the reason she’s searching for one of his adopted sons. Their chemistry is immediate and intense, but can Grace heal from her past of pain and fear? When her secrets are finally revealed, can Adam forgive her deceptions and learn to love again?
Runaway (Book 2)
Forced to flee her abusive fiancé, Cassandra Shay’s disappearance into Montana territory is delayed when she discovers her fiancé and uncle’s plot to murder her illegitimate brother and another innocent cowboy.
Ty Bishop hates the Shays, but accompanies Jake Curtis to meet Jake’s newfound uncle, Derrick Shay. Ty’s suspicions are confirmed when he and Jake are imprisoned and left to drown. After Cassie frees them, the men travel with her for her own protection.
When they arrive in Montana, the locals are horrified to discover a Shay in their midst, but Ty is drawn to Cassie like no other and is determined to win her heart. Despite her strong attraction to Ty, Cassie knows she must keep her distance to protect him from the hired guns the Shays send to retrieve her.
But their love will not be denied, and they must fight for justice before forging their future together.
Redeemed (Book 3)
Sold into prostitution, Sara Fuller robs a client and flees to her brother in White Pines, Montana.
Anxiously awaiting his mail order bride, rancher Caleb Young is delighted when a beautiful woman steps off the stagecoach. A series of misassumptions soon finds the two taking their marriage vows.
When Sara discovers she isn’t Caleb’s intended bride, she hides her scandalous past and sets out to prove she can be a good wife. Caleb adores Sara but suspects her of hiding something very important. Despite Sara’s secrets, their love grows and a child is conceived.
When Caleb’s real bride arrives, their troubles begin, only to be compounded by the appearance of the man Sara robbed. Now the two lovers must discover whether their love is strong enough to survive the forces threatening to tear them apart.
The Hathaway series by Lisa Kleypas is a spin-off from the Wallflowers series. Cam Rohan, the hero of the first book, is featured pretty heavily in Evangeline’s novel, “Devil in Winter.” I liked all of them quite a bit, but they are absolutely vintage Kleypas, so if you like her stuff, you’ll like these. I don’t often see her titles for any cheaper than the occasional $1.99 Kindle Daily Deal price, so $2.50/per is pretty decent, plus apparently there’s a bonus story. If you’re into that kind of thing. :)
Rose gave that SEP book a D.
I’m generally a huge SEP fan, but I really REALLY disliked this one, which is too bad because her books don’t seem to be discounted very often. Extremely different in tone than the usual, and lacking in her usual light touch.
When I clicked on the links the Lauren Blakely set was $2.99 at Amazon and $7.19 at Kobo.
That last book set had to win a prize for improbably. Grace was raped by a rich man’s son who is chasing her, trying to “recapture” her for 20! freaking years? And she never goes to the police. Next, her brother, who presumably was given up for adoption 20 years ago (Or did this child appear 10 or 15 years after Grace becomes itinerant? Did her mother also become an itinerant cook for cattle drives?) So Grace becomes “frantic” about the fate on an adult brother whom she has not seen since he was a tot.
Then she conveniently falls ill when she meets the hero. Does she swoon at his feet?
I really, really liked the SEP, but it was different from her usual tone (and the puppets did take a little getting used to). It also took me a chapter or two to get into it. I’ve noticed that readers seem to either love it or hate it, so I think it’s one of those ‘your mileage may vary’ things. If you’re looking for SEP’s typical romantic comedy, this may disappoint. But if you’re open to a contemporary gothic that makes you smile and laugh in all the right places, you may want to give it a chance.
Off to get a digital copy. Thanks for the headsup, Jane!
The Lauren Blakely deal ended very early this morning.
This promo for Hui by Camille Leone is driving me crazy! Does it exist? When? I want to read it!!!
Heroes are My Weakness, was the first SEP book I read. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. It was a bit dark. I didn’t understand why she was so popular. Then I read Natural Born Charmer, and I love, love, Loved it!
@jenns I agree with you. And one who has been on the other side of a book with strongly feeling camps (really loved Sherry Thomas’ RAVISHING THE HEIRESS, for example), I’d just say that if you’re expecting SEP romantic comedy, this book isn’t for you.
I had initially pre-ordered the SEP… but cancelled my pre-order after reading all the negative reviews and ended up borrowing the book from Overdrive. It reminded me in too many ways of other books of hers and at the time was glad I didn’t buy it. At $3.99 I’ll buy it. It was over $10 for a lonnng while!
Buying the Kleypas is a no-brainer. I haven’t purchased any of that series, I either read in pback, listened and/or borrowed from Overdrive. I know I’ll revisit the series in the future.
Poor TBR doesn’t like it when I re-read. It only gets longer. :)
