The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen. $ .99
From the Jacket Copy:
The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else. What now?
She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.
Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.
Also, he’s taken.
Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.
They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.
But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness – one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

I’ll second Jane’s recommendation of The Year We Fell Down. It’s an extremely well written NA. One with true actual issues, as opposed to pseudo-angst. Highly recommend it!
Dangit. I loved The Year We Fell Down. Guess I won’t be begging for that $1. ;-)
I am so tired of NA, but I can count on less than one hand the number of times you’ve recommended something so enthusiastically, Jane. Done.
NA’s not my thing, but I just bought The Year We Fell Down since you each feel so strongly about it.
@Darlynne: @Joy B: +1
@Darlynne I too have become tired of NA, but have fallen victim to Jane’s belief in this book. I will try and get to it this weekend and see if it lives up to the keen support. :-)
I bought the entire Ivy Years series after reading an arc of The Understatement of the Year. I don’t even care that I paid full price, Sarina Bowen is that good. Also read her Gravity series this past weekend, loved it as well.
@Justine: What you all said.
I’ll be standing here in the corner with my one dollar bills!!
But…I’m trying to cut back…I have too much to read already…. Oh, darn it. Click.
I bought it at full price based on your previous review. I haven’t read it yet, but I really enjoyed book 2 of her gravity series so I’m sure I’ll like it (plus, all my friends keep recommending it!).
@Statch My exact reaction. “I have too many books! But this one is so shiny!!” *one clicks*
@Jane, no need to refund my dollar. I just started it and it’s great!
Has anyone read the other books in the series? I noticed that book three comes out at the end of the month and it’s an m/m romance.
Dammit, Jane, you know I don’t read NA.
*click*
@Liz (Bugetta): I’ve read the other two including the m/m and while I’m not a regular reader of m/m I found it terrific. The second book may be arguably better than the first, but I loved this Bowen for tackling a subject rarely found in romance.
I did not love Coming in from the Cold. Kind of made me angry in fact but I did like the second book in the gravity series.
Peer pressure!
::clicks too::
And now I’m actually looking forward to reading NA…
I haven’t ready many contemporary NA novels, but I’m intrigued. I’ll ‘click’.
@Jane: Your power, it’s scary. Use it responsibly.
/PSA
:wink:
It’s a whole 92p in the UK, so $1 won’t cover the cost – see what a wild risk I take!
(Unless Scotland votes Yes, Sterling plummets, and I make vast profits on the deal.)
Thanks for the rec.
Already bought, read and loved that book. Along w/Ann Aguirre’s new releases, it has proven that I do not, in fact, hate all NA books.
@Kati: +1 from me too. She’s my new autobuy author. I liked the second book even better and the novella is great too.
Oh I am clicking too :) and what’s the name of m/m book? :). Want!
@Sirius: It’s called The Understatement of the Year. It’s out in October. I have it on the TBR but I’m saving it – I don’t think I’ll be able to hold out much longer. It will probably be next because I have no impulse control.
I clicked Kaethrin :). Patience is not my name at all.
Kaetrin and I misspelled your name in the process too :(. Sorry.
@Sirius: no worries! :)
I have been fangirling all over the place about Sarina Bowen – I’m sure I’ve become quite annoying.
I can’t pass up this $1 challenge lol! Too funny.
Plus, don’t think I’ve ever read any NA before so this seems like a great place to start:)
Kaetrin I have a hard time applying the word “annoying” to you :).
@Sirius: Awwww!
(but that might be because you’re not on Twitter!) :D
I just devoured The Year We Fell Down and The Year We Hid Away and I have Blonde Date ready to go for tomorrow (it’s way too late to start now) and pre-ordered The Understatement of the Year. I guess you could say I like Sarina Bowen’s writing. :-)
Thanks for the money back guarantee rec, Jane. Without it I probably wouldn’t have given this series a chance and that would have been sad for me!
Dang it, Jane–I SO do not need another book to read! And I don’t even really like to read NA! Gah! *click*
Ok, I’m so weak. I don’t like NA, I’m skeptical of disability in romance, but it’s .99 at BN and what the heck, I bought it.
Bought and read last night. You get to keep your dollar. :D
Another one bought.
*delurk* Bought, read, you do NOT owe me a dollar. Though the inner goddess – I mean hope fairy – annoyed me mightily, it was a minor quibble compared to the rest. Probably going to buy the next one, after the sample chapters. Arg. :)
Evil chortle…
You are evil indeed Jane :). Loved the book, in fact last time I loved new adult m/f that much was when you recommended “Easy”. Thanks again :).
You can keep your dollar. I enjoyed it – although I don’t think I loved it as much as everyone else. Adam was just a little too perfect for Corey for me to really buy him as a fully developed character. But I loved Corey, especially when decided to get over him, and in general I was really rooting for her to get her guy.
*sigh* I hate to be a downer but I just am not a fan of this book. It was all sorts of meh for me which makes me Super sad because I was so pumped about reading it after your rec. It’s not even that I don’t like NA, I read quite a bit of it actually, this book just didn’t do anything for me.
@Maria: Ahh that’s okay. Now let me make good on my guarantee. Either tell me where to send my dollar or let me buy you a book for 99c.
@Jane: I feel weird taking advantage of your offer. I didn’t hate the book, I just didn’t particularly like it either. Plus I’ve spent more money on worse books. Actually, I did it last week when I bought Little Black Book by Tabitha Vargo and Melissa Andrea. Talk about rage inducing. I was lured into bad decision making by kobo coupon codes.
@Maria: Butting in here, but you totally shouldn’t feel weird. It’s partly about the pleasure of reading. When I like a book so much that I go out and buy copies for other people, it’s not just about the book, it’s about how the experience of that kind of reading is a gift.
I started this last night and had to force myself to put it down 1/3 in because I needed sleep to face a day of meetings. I think I’m with Cleo: I don’t love it as much as Jane, but I’m enjoying it immensely and see why people do love it that much. But if I didn’t, I’d totally make her buy me another book. ;)
@Sunita: This! So much. As I mentioned before I loved this book, and I always want to share the books I loved with my friends, but especially for this price I do not want them to be upset in case they would hate it, so of course I bought it for them. I just want to have a chance to share this kind of reading with them.
@Sunita: I’ve given thought to what you said and concede to your superior wisdom. I would like to try another recommended book, because I do understand what you mean about the joy of sharing and the gift of having something shared with you. To that end maybe the community here can pick another .99 book for me?
@Maria: Do any of the box sets appeal? That would really maximize your .99. :)
@Maria: Excellent!
MaryK has a great point and if someone suggests a .99 box set that sounds appealing I would go for that. My most recent surprisingly enjoyable read (for .99) is not a romance, so I don’t know if it would appeal to you. It’s a mystery set in Cardiff, Wales, featuring as the investigative duo an agoraphobic computer whiz and an ex-con who starts out as her house cleaner and becomes her investigative leg man. It’s called
BlindBinary Witness and it’s by Rosie Claverton. There’s a second installment releasing at the end of the month and I will do my utmost to review them both soon.But I agree that your book choice is a question for the DA commentariat. After reading a really good book, the next-most fun thing is suggesting it to other people when you’re done. ;)
@Sunita:
So much this.
@everyone FWIW, I gave TYWFD a B+/A- and I loved The Year We Hid Away (bk2) even more and very possibly I loved the novella Blonde Date even better.
@Sunita: @MaryK: I like the idea of a boxed set, more bang for Jane’s buck :) I kind of have romance tunnel vision right now. I’m like “oh a book with great writing and well developed characters? Eh, sounds alright I guess. Oh wait! There’s a romance with no plot to speak of and questionable editing, I’ll take that instead!”
@Maria: Oh Little Black Book! I remember reading the long spoiler on that book. So sorry. I have lots of recommendations if you don’t like plot or editing. ;)
@Jane: Is it sad that I was genuinely intrigued by this? Yeah, the spoiler was all kinds of WTF but it totally took a backseat to the characters. If I knew people like that in real life I’d be in prison for murdering them via smacks to the back of the head.
Yep, you kept your 77p The Year We Fell Down was awesome
@Alison R: Awesome!
@Maria: Ha, well, you still have to let me know what book you want.
