From the Jacket Copy:
As the only daughter of a successful businesswoman, Grace grew up with nothing but the best. Sheltered by her single mother and educated in an exclusive private school in Detroit, Grace was not ready for the harsh realities of an unforgiving world.
Grace’s naivete coupled with her desire to experience life on her own terms leads her down a path of emotional devastation and physical abuse. Through a chance encounter Grace meets Mike, a successful design artist who introduces her to a relationship very different from her usual one-night-stands and affairs with married men.
Things take a turn for the worst however when Grace’s roommate walks in on her and her married personal trainer in their apartment. This betrayal tears apart Mike and Grace’s romance and shatters the trust and friendship between Grace and Trina.
In the midst of torn relationships, Grace’s mother dies in a tragic plane crash leaving Grace with no one left to turn to except the God she thought had long since abandoned her.

Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don’t cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn’t fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.
Now, sealed in human form and banished to the DFZ–a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit–Julius has one month to prove he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever. But in a city of modern mages and vengeful spirits where dragons are considered monsters to be exterminated, he’s going to need some serious help to survive this test.
He only hopes humans are more trustworthy than dragons…
Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
In 1508, despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome. Despite having completed his masterful statue David four years earlier, he had little experience as a painter, even less working in the delicate medium of fresco, and none with challenging curved surfaces such as the Sistine ceiling’s vaults. The temperamental Michelangelo was himself reluctant: He stormed away from Rome, incurring Julius’s wrath, before he was eventually persuaded to begin.
Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling recounts the fascinating story of the four extraordinary years he spent laboring over the twelve thousand square feet of the vast ceiling, while war and the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. A panorama of illustrious figures intersected during this time-the brilliant young painter Raphael, with whom Michelangelo formed a rivalry; the fiery preacher Girolamo Savonarola and the great Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus; a youthful Martin Luther, who made his only trip to Rome at this time and was disgusted by the corruption all around him. Ross King blends these figures into a magnificent tapestry of day-to-day life on the ingenious Sistine scaffolding and outside in the upheaval of early-sixteenth-century Italy, while also offering uncommon insight into the connection between art and history.
Rachel Aaron’s Dragon books were really enjoyable. The main character is a sweetheart and there is a slight romance (the characters are not the most emotionally aware people). One thing I am amused by is how mercanary the female character is. Actually, I kinda love it.
I second the Rachel Aaron Heartstriker series. I have the third book on preorder (releasing August 5, I think).
I simply could not get into the Aaron series and DNF’d the first book. So many people seem to love it, tho, so maybe I need to give it another shot–maybe in audio.
I think I may have to pick up that book on the Sistine Chapel–it takes me back to when I read The Agony and the Ecstasy many years ago as a teen.
Another vote for Rachel Aaron’s Heartstriker series. It’s one of my favorite UF series right now. Definitely no romance, but really likable main characters and fun plots.
