DAILY DEALS: Quirky YA, a boy in need of a makeover, and a photojournalist in need of protection
Ryker by Sawyer Bennett $ 0.99
From the Jacket Copy:
The rugged men of the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team are winning hearts once again in another scorching novel from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett.
The stakes have never been higher for Carolina Cold Fury goalie Ryker Evans. With his contract running out, he’s got a year left to prove he’s still at the top of his game. And since his wife left him, Ryker has been balancing life as a pro-hockey star and a single parent to two daughters. Management is waiting for him to screw up. The fans are ready to pounce. Everybody’s taking dirty shots — except for the fiery redhead whose faith in Ryker gives him a fresh start.
As the league’s only female general manager, Gray Brannon has learned not to mix business with pleasure. And yet even this tough, talented career woman can’t help breaking her own rules as she gives Ryker everything she’s got. She hopes their hot streak will last forever, but with Ryker’s conniving ex plotting to reclaim her man, the pressure’s on Gray to step up and save a tender new love before it’s too late.
A year or so ago, I’d say it’s preposterous that there’s a female general manager but you know, books should be aspirational and with the first full-time coach in the NFL hired by the Bills along with the success of Becky Hammon at the Spurs, we should have more women in power positions in sports romance. As I was driving my kid home from the gym, she told me that she was thinking about being a coach in the NFL and thought that by the time she was ready for such a position, there’d be a lot of women coaches. I hope she’s right.

Honor Reclaimed by Tonya Burrows:
Former Marine sniper Seth Harlan is new to HORNET and anxious to prove he can still do his job despite an ongoing battle with PTSD. He remembers all too well what it’s like to sit inside an enemy camp, praying for rescue and waiting for death, so when a wounded veteran contacts HORNET to rescue a buddy that got left behind, all sorts of nasty memories strain his newfound stability.
An interview with a runaway Afghani child bride leads photojournalist Phoebe Leighton to an arms deal involving a suitcase bomb powerful enough to wipe out a mid-sized town, and she realizes this is one battle she can’t win on her own. Forming an unlikely alliance with a ragtag team of military and government delinquents, she meets Seth, a sniper carrying as many emotional scars as physical, who impresses her with his steely will and ignites passions within her she thought long dead.
Suddenly this mission is about a lot more than an abandoned soldier. Racing against the clock, Seth, Phoebe, and the rest of HORNET struggle to stop that bomb before it reaches its final destination: The United States.

How far will you go for perfection?
For “Perfect Paige” Westfeld, today is “D” Day. As in, she just got one on her calculus test. With her dreams of Stanford, her reputation, and her parents’ expectations at stake, Paige needs to find a way to save face before everything she’s worked for goes up in flames.
Ben Franklin (yes, he’s related) is from the wrong side of town, with the wrong clothes and the wrong kind of life. He also knows an opportunity when he sees one, and he’ll be happy to tutor Paige-if she makes him into the kind of guy her best friend, the hottest girl in school, will date.
It’s the perfect arrangement. And Paige is determined not even the inconvenient-and utterly imperfect-attraction simmering between her and Ben will ruin it…
The Night Gwen Stacy Died by Sarah Bruni $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
An offbeat love story about the adventures and mutual rescue of a young woman out of place in her hometown and a mysterious stranger who calls himself Peter Parker (and begins to cast her in the role of Spider-Man’s first sweetheart), The Night Gwen Stacy Died is about first loss, first love, and finding our real identities.
Jane, I hope your daughter realizes her dream, or whatever shape that takes in the years to come.
THE HUMMINGBIRD WIZARD by Meredith Blevins is free today at Amazon. Its the first in a three-book mystery series about Annie Szabo and the outrageously eccentric Romany family she married into. Widowed, she cut ties with them, but the murder of her best friend puts her back in their arena. It’s been a long time since I read it, but I do remember how much I loved the characters, the curses/magic and Annie’s former MIL, Mina.
