DAILY DEALS: Letter writing, uber-cool spy, historical, and a YA
Where the Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller $ 2.99
From the Jacket Copy:
Stolen as a child from her large and loving family, and on the run with her mom for more than ten years, Callie has only the barest idea of what normal life might be like. She’s never had a home, never gone to school, and has gotten most of her meals from laundromat vending machines. Her dreams are haunted by memories she’d like to forget completely. But when Callie’s mom is finally arrested for kidnapping her, and Callie’s real dad whisks her back to what would have been her life in small-town Florida, Callie must find a way to leave the past behind. She must learn to be part of a family. And she must believe that love-even with someone who seems an improbable choice-is more than just a possibility.
Trish Doller writes incredibly real teens, and this searing story of love, betrayal, and how not to lose your mind will resonate with readers who want their stories gritty and utterly true.

Meanwhile There Are Letters by $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
In 1970, Ross Macdonald wrote a letter to Eudora Welty, beginning a thirteen-year correspondence between fellow writers and kindred spirits. Though separated by background, geography, genre, and his marriage, the two authors shared their lives in witty, wry, tender, and at times profoundly romantic letters, each drawing on the other for inspiration, comfort, and strength. They brought their literary talents to bear on a wide range of topics, discussing each others’ publications, the process of translating life into fiction, the nature of the writer’s block each encountered, books they were reading, and friends and colleagues they cherished. They also discussed the world around them, the Vietnam War, the Nixon, Carter, and Reagan presidencies, and the environmental threats facing the nation. The letters reveal the impact each had on the other’s work, and they show the personal support Welty provided when Alzheimer’s destroyed Macdonald’s ability to communicate and write.
The editors of this collection, who are the definitive biographers of these two literary figures, have provided extensive commentary and an introduction. They also include Welty’s story fragment “Henry,” which addresses Macdonald’s disease. With its mixture of correspondence and narrative, Meanwhile There Are Letters provides a singular reading experience: a prose portrait of two remarkable artists and one unforgettable relationship.
The Harry Palmer Quartet by Len Deighton $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
The first four ‘Secret Files’ from the master of fictional espionage, Len Deighton, containing the international exploits of Britain’s uber-cool sixties spy, Harry Palmer, together in one e-bundle for the first time.
When Len Deighton wrote THE IPCRESS FILE, HORSE UNDER WATER, FUNERAL IN BERLIN and BILLION-DOLLAR BRAIN he not only reinvented spy fiction, but he created a style icon and literary legend: ‘Harry Palmer’.
The nameless, working-class spy of the books was given a face and identity when he was played by Michael Caine in three classic films. Since then both the books and the character have become international icons.
Now it’s your chance to delve into the mysteries of the four ‘Secret Files’ as Harry Palmer investigates conspiracies, secret experiments and even a deadly virus, with all the cockiness and dry wit a reluctant spy can muster.
Now I see all the code instead of the blue box. Sorry.
I’m running Linux Mint and the blue boxes are correct, border, text and all. Weird.
Sorry, running Google Chrome on Linux Mint.
Where is the Henry Palmer Quartet priced $1.99?
@LML: Shoot. It was at Amazon earlier this morning.
I’m getting blue boxes, but everything (fonts, graphics, and the menu bar is on two lines now) is weirdly huge. It all seems unbalanced. (Android tablet. No idea what specific OS.)
Damn, too late on the Deighton. That was a GREAT sale, those books are classics.
I’m running Chrome on a Chromebook and the blue boxes and bookstore buttons look like they’re supposed to (they didn’t yesterday).
Ninja at First Sight by Penny Reid is currently free at amazon. Prequel novella to Happily Ever Ninja releasing later this month (Fiona’s story in Knitting in the City series).
The last time I responsibly attend to chores before checking in with DA and SBTB!
Thanks, Maria F., for mentioning Ninja at First Sight by Penny Reid.
@Lostshadows: I’ve got the developer working on the font issue.
Thanks for the Penny Reid, Maria. And boy did I grab that Len Deighton; it is on sale, even in Canada!
The buttons and the blue boxes are working for me too, on iOS Safari.
