Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident by Donnie Eichar. $ 1.99
From the Jacket Copy:
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened. This gripping work of literary nonfiction delves into the mystery through unprecedented access to the hikers’ own journals and photographs, rarely seen government records, dozens of interviews, and the author’s retracing of the hikers’ fateful journey in the Russian winter. A fascinating portrait of the young hikers in the Soviet era, and a skillful interweaving of the hikers narrative, the investigators’ efforts, and the author’s investigations, here for the first time is the real story of what happened that night on Dead Mountain.

It Happened One Autumn (Wallflower Series #2) by Lisa Kleypas. $ 3.99.
From the Jacket Copy:
Four young ladies enter London society with one necessary goal:they must use their feminine wit and wiles to find a husband. So they band together, and a daring husband-hunting scheme is born.
It Happened at the Ball…
Where beautiful but bold Lillian Bowman quickly learned that her independent American ways weren’t entirely “the thing.” And the most disapproving of all was insufferable, snobbish, and impossible Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London’s most eligible aristocrat.
It Happened in the Garden…
When Marcus shockingly — and dangerously–swept her into his arms. Lillian was overcome with a consuming passion for a man she didn’t even like. Time stood still; it was as if no one else existed…thank goodness they weren’t caught very nearly in the act!
It Happened One Autumn…
Marcus was a man in charge of his own emotions, a bedrock of stability. But with Lillian, every touch was exquisite torture, every kiss an enticement for more. Yet how could he consider taking a woman so blatantly unsuitable…as his bride?
The story told in Dead Mountain really freaks me out. I had heard about it last year. Amazon hasn’t yet price matched it yet. I wonder what his theory was.
I’d never heard of the incident in Dead Mountain. It shows as $10+ at Amazon and $11+ at the iBookstore, so I went with the Nook version. (Every time I swear I’m ONLY going to read on my Paperwhite instead of my phone, I buy a deal from Nook or Apple, or stumble across a Kobo coupon code I can’t pass up.)
What is it with romances with restaurants in Chicago? Maybe I’m just hyper aware because I’m from Chicago, but I’ve seen several romances set in Chicago recently and they all seem to involve restaurants. Weird. Has anyone read this one (The Sweetest Seduction)?
I just bought The Sweetest Seduction but haven’t started it yet. I wonder if I should be worried about the editing? The covers of the books (Kobo had books 1 and 2 listed and the titles/covers for all seven are on the author’s website) each have the series as “The Kelley Brothers” but the blurb and other info on the author’s site have “The Kelly Brothers”
As Kelly is my first name the variation in spelling is something that really jumps out at me.
Oh, I really hope Amazon price matches the Dead Mountain book. I put it on my wish list just yesterday, and was so excited when I saw it here today. I have another book on the subject, but this new theory sounds very plausible.
The deal on the Kleypas book is over and is now back to regular price.
