I posted these at Smart Bitches, but because I’m pushy and annoying, here are some recommendations in case anyone is looking for ones beyond the usual names that are always mentioned, especially for those who like seeing diversity in the regular Harlequin/Silhouette lines
– Mergers and Matrimony by Allison Leigh, a Silhouette Special Edition from 2006, has a Japanese hero and a white heroine, and both characters are in their 40s. I haven’t read it in a while, but I remember enjoying it a great deal and holding on to a copy of it. (There’s a sequel with the hero’s daughter and a white hero, but I honestly can’t remember anything about it or if I enjoyed it, which probably speaks for itself.)
– Silent Night Stakeout by Kerry Connor, a Harlequin Intrigue from 2010, is a murder mystery with a black hero and heroine. It was a DABWAHA nominee that year.
– I’ll Be Watching You by Tracy Montoya is a serial killer thriller with a hero and heroine who are both Latino. Though it’s been a while, I also remember liking Next of Kin by the same author, which also has a Latino hero and heroine. Plus the heroine is a librarian, but an actual-human-being type of librarian, not some uptight stereotype.
– Wedding? Impossible! by Karen Templeton is the rare contemporary romance with both an Asian-American hero and heroine. They’re both of Chinese descent.
– Soldier’s Rescue Mission by Cindy Dees is a fun action-adventure story with a black hero and (I think) Latina heroine.
Marie Donovan wrote two Harlequin Blazes (well, she wrote more than that, but these two stand out) that were both really sexy, more so most in the line, and featured characters both interesting and diverse:
– Her Body of Work has a Cuban-American hero and a Swedish heroine, both of whom are immigrants, and great sexual tension.
– Her Book of Pleasure has an Asian-American, or maybe biracial, heroine.
Some of my favorite Harlequins are by Carla Kelly ~ The Surgeon’s Lady, Marrying the Captain, Marrying the Royal Marine ….
@NT: “Silent night stakeout” and “I’ll be watching you” sound good. Were the mysteries believable as well, or just there as window dressing for romance if you remember? Thank you.
This is mind boggling.
I saw this on Smart Bitches too and I didn’t list my favorites, but I tend towards English/Australian Harlequin Romance and fluffy, light hearted reads. Some of my favorites are Liz Fielding, Jessica Hart, Ally Blake, Fiona Harper, Sophie Weston.
None of them are currently writing for Harlequin I belive. So some of these may seem a bit old fashioned, but they hit my sweet spot.
Also love Anne McAllister’s Presents and her quirky characters.
@Sirius: Definitely not just window dressing. I think “I’ll Be Watching You” actually leans more toward the suspense, like Intrigues tend to, with a grittier, more mainstream feel. “Silent Night Stakeout” has more of an equal balance between the romance and mystery, and both sides are developed well.
I would also recommend All I Am by Nicole Helm. The hero is a grumpy virgin veteran with PTSD who makes organic dog treats and rescues animals. I loved it so much. I have also heard good things about the first in the series, All I Have, but it’s still sitting on my kindle waiting to be read.
Kelly Hunter–Trouble in a Pinstripe Suit and Her Singapore Fling are favorites.
I also like Natalie Anderson.
Dani Collins : Harlequin Presents More than a convenient marriage and the Wrong heirs duo. Totally loved these, ended up glomming her entire backlist.
@NT: Thank you so much for your recommendations! It’s so hard to find minorities as the lead in mainstream romance. I had no idea there was a Harlequin with an Asian American couple (as opposed to the more typical white male/Asian female pairing; and one with a black hero with a Latina heroine, too. I’m definitely going to buy some of those books to support the authors.
@CelineB: I snagged 2 in this series and I know I shouldn’t be complaining but I wonder why the 3rd book – “All That I Want” – is still showing up at Amazon for $4.49?
@Jayne:
I have All That I Want in paperback if you want me to send it to you. :)
NT thank you. I am reading “Silent night stakeout” and at forty percent really enjoying it and I very rarely go for Harlequins in the first place.
@NT: Thank you again. “Silent night” was great and I was shocked by the killer’s identity. That’s no small feat since the book is not long. And I loved the couple and insta love did not feel like such. Great book.
@Jayne I know! I wanted to get the third one. I guess maybe it’s too new?
@Amy: Glad to help. I posted a few more with diverse characters in the Smart Bitches thread if you’re interested. Didn’t want to cross-post so I wasn’t monopolizing multiple threads –more than I already am anyway.
@Sirius: Happy to hear I didn’t lead you wrong! I’m always a little nervous to give recommendations–not that it stops me, obviously–since people like different things, so it’s good to know you enjoyed the book.
@CelineB: I think that’s the case as some 2016 books from Spring are on sale but ones from recent months aren’t.
@CK: Thank you. That is so kind of you to offer. I’ve requested that my local library buy it but I’ll keep your offer in mind.
In the diversity department, Maisey Yates has a Presents with a black hero and white heroine. It’s called The Highest Price to Pay. It’s hard to find as an ebook because it’s part of a 2-in-1 volume and Amazon’s listing only captures one of the titles.

What happened to Victoria Parker?
It has been so long since I read a Harlequin book
