A gorgeous bounty hunter. A wanted woman. A passion they can’t deny.Accused of a horrific crime and on the run, Kat has been rejected by everyone she loves. She’s a fugitive from her past, flitting from town to town with nothing but the clothes on her back—until she meets a man who literally stops her in her tracks.A notorious bounty hunter with powerful instincts, he never fails to capture his prey. But there’s something about Kat that gets under his skin–and it’s not just the naked innocence he sees in her pretty eyes. Behind his ice cold demeanor, he has his own darkness… and now his lively, vulnerable mark is about to crack him wide open.
As they travel across the country together, both captor and captive are unable to deny the spark of attraction between them. Will their journey bring them together…or will their dangerous secrets tear them apart?
On the run and terrified, Katherine Percle has been hiding for the last month while running from being prosecuted for the murder of her stepfather. She’s been changing cities routinely, running as far and as fast as she can. Little does she know, she has a bounty hunter, Steel, on her tail. He’s been watching his mark, impressed with her ingenuity and awaiting the moment when he can grab her, return her, and collect his fee.
Steel is heartless, hard, ambitious and determined, but once he catches Kat, he finds that he’s attracted to her genuineness, her ardent belief in her actions and her deep desire to escape prosecution for the murder of a man who routinely brutalized her mother. Though her mother seems completely ungrateful for Kat’s interference in her relationship with her husband. Kat is also in possession of data that is critical to the running of her stepfather’s business. She knows if she goes back, not only will she lose everything, but her very life might be in danger. She tries multiple times to escape Steel. When that doesn’t work, she tries to forge some sort of connection with him. Despite the fact that she knows there is chemistry and attraction between them, he’s not biting at all. But then, in one hot moment, every thing changes, and they connect. Soon Steel is aiding and abetting his mark, helping her to escape prosecution and the horrible fate that awaits her at the hands of his client.
This book was entertaining enough, with lots of twists and turns. The heroine was plucky and definitely smart, and the hero was interesting in that he was hard on the outside, but once he softened toward the heroine, he switched into Caregiving Alpha mode. So why didn’t I connect with the book? I think part of it was that the connection between the characters felt forced to me. It felt like you were trying too hard, between the “I hate you/I want you” sexual foreplay between the two and then the sex itself and their subsequent reactions, to when the hero’s light turned on, and all of a sudden he was in protect mode. The entire thing felt forced to me. And I felt that the ending was wrapped up into a bow that tried believablity. While you authorial voice was effective — I read the book in two sittings, but a week later, I can’t tell you a whole lot about it. Sadly for me, Held Against You felt like just another book to me.
