REVIEW: Crazy Cat Lady by Ester Scholten and Agnes Loonstra
Crazy Cat Lady (noun): A badge of honor for people who know cats are awesome.
Do you often wake up covered in cat hair? Do you keep adopting more and more cats—then staying home Friday nights to cuddle them? Proclaim your feline obsession proudly! Joyfully illustrated with cheeky mottoes, flowcharts, and fun facts throughout, this little book is an affectionate tribute to cats and the cool ladies who love them. Includes a bonus sheet of colorful stickers!
Welcome to the new “crazy cat lady.” Once a dowdy, eccentric figure with at least a dozen cats shedding hair on every available surface, today she’s a hip-at-any-age woman who knows an unassailable truth: Cats are awesome! And she declares her kitty love with pride, humor, and—like her cats—an irresistible dose of sass. Her tote bag is stocked with lint rollers and catnip. All her photos get the #catlady or #crazycatlady hashtags. And she’s not alone—each tag has over 4 million posts on Instagram!
With clever text by Ms. Scholten and utterly charming artwork by Ms. Loonstra (a regular Flow illustrator), Crazy Cat Lady is a celebration of the quirky, relatable, and instantly recognizable habits of devoted feline fans. There are mottos for the perpetually fur-covered: Cat hair, don’t care. Quotes for the owners who know the more the merrier: “Cats are like glasses of wine. You can’t have just one.” Flowcharts on what to name your kitten. “How to draw a cat” tutorials. Fun facts: Did you know that a cat has 230 bones in its body, more than you? And portraits of crazy cat ladies through history, from Florence Nightingale to Katy Perry. At an impulse-friendly price, this sweetly edgy little book has the fresh outlook on cat fanaticism the modern feline lover has been waiting for.
Dear Fellow Crazy Cat Ladies,
Of course when I saw this book I had to get it because I’m a proud Crazy Cat Lady (CCL). I have the reviews of books about cats to prove it. Cat hair? I’ve got it. Believe me with four long haired cats, there is a never ending supply. Talk to them? Why, of course and they listen and totally understand me. I’m sure of it. Brushes and combs and cat toys all over my house? Got those too and will probably buy another comb just to have one in every room. I do indeed take better care of them than myself. If there’s any bad weather forecast, I buy cat food and litter first and only then stock up on food for me (but not bread and milk). There are empty boxes (perfect cat toy) all over my house. Complete strangers walk up to me in stores and smilingly say “you’ve got cats, don’t you?” Yes, I am a cat mom, cat lover, cat addict, and ailurophile. And this charming little book celebrates me and all other people who adore the kittez. B

Very cute. Even tho it’s (another) way to stigmatize women I have no problem with being called/identifying as a CCL. I only have one, but I think the many pairs of cat shoes I own/wear give me away. >^.^<
@Susan: At this point in my life, I’ve relaxed and embrace my CCL status.
