REVIEW: I Ain’t Doin’ It: Unfiltered Thoughts From a Sarcastic Southern Sweetheart by Heather Land
Social media comedian Heather Land uses her trademark sassy, laugh-out-loud humor to remind us of the many ways that real life can be really funny.
Heather Land has something to say about almost everything in life—the unbelievable, inconceivable, and downright frustrating—and why she “ain’t doin’ it.” In her first book, Heather shines a light on the (occasional) ridiculousness of life through a series of hilarious essays, dishing on everything from Walmart and ex-husbands to Southern beauty pageants and unfortunate trips to the gynecologist.
I Ain’t Doin’ It reminds us that when it comes to life’s messy moments, it’s all about perspective—and that we too can say, I ain’t doin’ it!
Dear Ms. Land,
A friend first told me about your “I Ain’t Doin’ It” videos on you tube. She said I had to go watch some and then proceeded to tell me some punch lines. The Walmart episodes got extra special love. So I went and I watched and I laughed.
Then I saw this book title and said “Oh, my. It’s her! I’ve got to request this arc.” So I did and I was approved (thank you!) It just so happened that I got a chance to read it over the days before I was scheduled for one of those horribly invasive medical procedures that most of us will eventually have to suffer through. No TMI but reading this helped me laugh through that prep that causes people to scream and the screeching violins from “Psycho” to play in their minds.
With brutal honesty, you tell the story of your life: the childhood, the family (all good except maybe hunting deer with your dad), church the pregnancy nausea, the joys of motherhood, and the shock and emotional collapse of divorce. But you clawed your way out with the love and support of friends and family and the Lord. People who aren’t religious might feel that this isn’t the book for them. If so, they can enjoy your videos. But it is a vital part of who you are so good for you that you did.
I hope you keep mining life for comic jewels – and yes, Walmart is almost an endless supply – and that you keep entertaining us with your sarcasm and humor. B-
~Jayne
