Time for a Halloween road trip … Nessa hates her full name – Agnes – which she inherited from her great-great grandmother – but is that all she inherited? Because rumour had it that Great-Great Granny Agnes was a witch, and a few unusual things have been happening to Nessa recently … First, there’s the strange book she finds in her local coffee shop, and then the invite from her next-door neighbour Ewan Grainger to accompany him on a rather supernatural research trip. What ensues is a Halloween journey through Scotland in a yellow camper van (accompanied by a big black cat called Schubert), a mystical encounter in an ancient forest and maybe just a touch of magic!

Last year when I read “A Christmas Secret,” I said that I’d go back and read the first book in this novella series. Ta-da. I think I adore Schubert even more after reading his first adventure.
Nessa (No, her name isn’t Vanessa. She wishes. Instead she’s named for her great-granny Agnes who might have been the mistress of King Edward VII or a witch. Or both.) likes her upstairs neighbor, author Ewen whose book has been optioned for a movie but his girlfriend Fern? Nope, nope, nope. Schubert isn’t a fan either. When Ewen asks Nessa to join him on a trip to do research for his next book, Nessa is delighted even if she first thought he was asking her to do something else.
While out in the woods where witches were supposedly executed hundreds of years ago, Nessa and Schubert have a very interesting meeting and learn lots of interesting things. Will what this person tells Nessa oust Fern and snag Ewen while Schubert makes refreshments?
This story is a little more twee than the second one though the execution of the witches is sad and listening to the people who utter ‘sin, dex, sin, dex’ is a little spooky. I can’t say that the romance is quick given how long Nessa and Ewen have known and been friends with each other but the realization and actualization zips along. One thing I really do like is when everyone is figuring out relationships, Nessa is very ‘don’t rush your choice just because of one stupid night’ to Ewen and is otherwise darn nice to the real witch in the book when Nessa could have been catty. Ouch, sorry Schubert.
Does Schubert understand what is being said? It certainly seems like it. Is he the sidekick to have on hand along with his pet toy, Catnip? Of course. He also has excellent taste in people. B-
