JOINT REVIEW: Maurice by E. M. Forster
Set in the elegant Edwardian world of Cambridge undergraduate life, this story by a master novelist introduces us to Maurice Hall when he is fourteen. We follow him through public school and Cambridge, and into his father’s firm. In a highly structured society, Maurice is a conventional young man in almost every way—except that he is homosexual.

Sirius: I first read Maurice three or four years ago and really loved it, but I never thought I would end up reviewing it.
For those of you who have not read it yet (do!), as the blurb tells you the story is about Maurice Hall, whom we meet for the first time when he is a fourteen year old boy preparing to go to another school. In essence this story is about Maurice growing up, becoming a man, finding a person he loves and loves him back, and hopefully having his happy ending – as we all know such stories belong to genre Romance. I think this book is a Romance indeed. I remember how shocked I was when I finished a story written in the beginning of the twentieth century and finding that yes, it ends happily (or at least as happily as it could with just a touch of open ending).
Sunita: I’m not sure why I never read this book earlier, but when I recently came across some reviews and discussions about it and realized it had a happy ending, I knew I had to read it sooner rather than later. There is a terrific audio version with Peter Firth narrating, so I got that and persuaded Sirius that we should do a conversational review.
Sirius: I have to be honest that one of the reasons why I did not want to reread “Maurice” was because for few weeks after my first read I could not touch most other m/m books. I felt that no other romance could come close because this one had such an in-depth study of human nature. It reminded me of Russian 19th century books and love story where everything worked on every level. And the writing was just so good.
Sunita: I’ve read a few of Forster’s other novels and his writing is indeed impressive. This book was written early in his career, but he suppressed its publication because of its subject matter. When it was finally published posthumously in 1971, a number of critics called it a lesser work and even mediocre. While I agree with the “lesser” comment to an extent (it’s not on a par with Howard’s End, which some consider his finest), it’s still very good. I do wonder if some of the criticism stems from the fact that it has a happy ending for a gay relationship despite taking place during a period of homosexual persecution (it’s worth noting that the romance is inspired by a real long-term relationship).
Sirius: If you think about it the plot is really simple. Boy is growing up, boy meets boy, they fall in love, they are together, they break up, the man is upset but eventually he meets another man, and this time they stay together, hopefully forever after the book ends.
But we get to know the main character and several other characters to such a degree that they feel like real people. We get to know them as not just two human beings who fall in love (even though of course falling in love is one of the central themes of the books), but as “human beings”, period.
Sunita: Yes, I completely agree. It’s a simple plot and the focus is on Maurice, so the book doesn’t have the complexity of some of Forster’s other novels. It’s set mostly in London, Cambridge, and the countryside, so there is none of the wide physical sweep you get in the other works. But as a coming-of-age novel I think it succeeds well and is powerful.
Sirius: For example, the author devotes quite a few pages to Maurice’s relationship with religion.
“It was the same with his atheism. No one felt as deeply as he expected. With the crudity of youth he drew his mother apart and said that he should always respect her religious prejudices and those of the girls, but that his own conscience permitted him to attend church no longer. She said it was a great misfortune.
“I knew you would be upset, I cannot help it mother dearest. I am made that way and it is no good arguing.”
“Your poor father always went to church.”
“I’m not my father.”
“Morrie, Morrie, what a thing to say.”
“Well, he isn’t,” said Kitty in her perky way. “Really, mother, come.”
“Kitty, dear, you here,” cried Mrs. Hall, feeling that disapproval was due and unwilling to bestow it on her son. “We were talking about things not suited, and you are perfectly wrong besides, for Maurice is the image of his father—Dr. Barry said so.”
“Well, Dr. Barry doesn’t go to church himself,” said Maurice, falling into family habit of talking all over the shop.
“He is a most clever man,” said Mrs. Hall with finality, “and Mrs. Barry’s the same”.
The slip of their mother’s convulsed Ada and Kitty. They would not stop laughing at the idea of Mrs. Barry’s being a man, and Maurice’s atheism was forgotten. He did not communicate on Easter Sunday, and supposed the row would come then, as in Durham’s case. But no one took any notice, for the suburbs no longer exact Christianity. This disgusted him, it made him look at society with a new eyes. Did society, while professing to be so moral and sensitive, really mind anything?”
I do not know about you, but I was amused at how this teenager wanted the whole world (or at least his family) to acknowledge his atheism, but nobody around him took him as seriously as he may have wanted to be listened to.
I also enjoyed how the author did not shy away from portraying Maurice as not very gifted academically and at some point he flat out calls him lazy. During one of their discussions with Clive when Clive starts talking about Greeks, Maurice admits that he cannot follow. Maurice has some other very real flaws – when he is twenty three he is described as a “promising suburban tyrant whose rule was stronger because it was fairly just and mild.”
Sunita: I was struck by the role of religion in the novel too, because while I expected Forster to be anti-established religion given his background, he integrated the tension between religious faith and sexual orientation into the storyline subtly, and it worked differently for Clive and for Maurice.
And like you, I appreciated that Maurice was not particularly special (so unlike heroes in romances written today). He was quite ordinary, except for his attraction to men, which of course wound up making all the difference in his life and which turned out to make him more self-aware and more willing to take risks for happiness than many around him. In the end he was the most interesting character to me even though he didn’t start that way.
Sirius: In other words, I think what we have here is not a romanticized portrayal of the main character in the story which as I said above belongs in genre Romance, in my opinion.
And still I really liked him. What we also see here is a real character growth of somebody who from being confused as to his attraction to men grows up, learns to be honest with himself about his feelings, and becomes a man. Maurice’s relationship with Clive Durham (it was interesting how he becomes Clive instead of Durham when they grow closer) grows in intensity at the same time that Maurice is beginning to mature into a man. I liked that the author did not just tell us that they were friends before they fall in love, but actually showed that they were friends since they were friends first.
“He wrote often to Durham – long letters trying carefully to express shades of feeling. Durham made little of them and said so. His replies were equally long. Maurice never let them out of his pocket, changing them from suit to suit and even pinning them in his pyjamas when he went to bed. He would wake up and, watching the reflections from the street lamp, remember how he used to be afraid as a little boy.”
Clearly it was not easy for him or Clive to say out loud that they loved each other, and we learn that Maurice needs to sit on things before he figured them out.
“A slow nature such as Maurice’s appears insensitive, for it needs time to even feel. Its instinct is to assume that nothing either for good or evil had happened, and to resist the invader. Once gripped, it feels acutely, and its sensations in love are particularly profound.”
“After this crisis Maurice became a man. Hitherto – if human beings can be estimated – he had not been worth anyone’s affection, but conventional, petty, treacherous to others, because to himself. Now he had the highest gift to offer. The idealism and the brutality that ran through boyhood had joined at last, and twined into love. No one might want such love, but he could not feel ashamed of it, because it was “he,”, neither body or soul, not body and soul, but “he” working through both. He still suffered, yet sense of triumph had come elsewhere. Pain had shown him a niche behind the world’s judgments, whither he could withdraw.”
Those who have read the book know that the relationship between Maurice and Clive eventually ends. When I was rereading (and then listening to the audiobook), I once again wondered why it ended. I mean, I was pretty sure that Clive just was not strong enough to endure the life of non–conformism and that is why he convinced himself that he did not love Maurice and was not attracted to men anymore (and I am saying this without any kind of judgment – surely nobody should be forced to endure the persecution because of whom they are attracted to).
Sunita: That’s how I read it too. Clive seemed more pitiable to me than anything else. He wasn’t a coward, and he didn’t seem to be permanently damaged by giving up Maurice and suppressing his attraction to men. He was just not that committed to anything but a highly conventional life, and despite his intellectual gifts, he wasn’t introspective.
Sirius: But I was also wondering whether Clive really loved Maurice in the first place or did he just like being loved and adored. In the passage I quoted above there is this:
“He wrote often to Durham – long letters trying carefully to express shades of feeling. Durham made little of them and said so.”
Durham made little of them and said so could be a foreshadowing that they did not care for each other equally? When we get some of Clive’s perspective (the story is written in third person limited and we are mostly in Maurice’s head, but also we do get to hear Clive’s thoughts), we also get this:
“The man was bourgeois, unfinished and stupid- the worst of confidants. Yet he told about his home troubles, touched out of all proportion by his dismissal of Chapman. When Hall started teasing he was charmed. Others held off, regarding him as sedate, and he liked being thrown about by a powerful and handsome boy. It was delightful too when Hall stroked his hair; the faces of two people in the room would fade: he leant back till his cheek brushed the flannel of trousers and felt the warmth strike through. He was under no illusion on these occasions. He knew what kind of pleasure he was receiving, and received it honestly, certain that it brought no harm to either of them. Hall was a man who only liked women – one could tell it at a glance.”
I don’t know – bourgeois, unfinished and stupid does not sound like a very respectful portrayal of somebody whom one likes, even if it is true. As I said before, Maurice is not portrayed as very gifted academically, even if I think “stupid” is not a word we can characterize him with. I am conflicted about Clive – I want to believe that he loved Maurice, but I am just not sure.
Sunita: I think Clive was genuinely in love with Maurice, I just think it wasn’t very deep. He was very smart and gifted but he looked more interesting than he was. He enjoyed academic and intellectual study and debates, but he didn’t want to live that life. To me it seemed that when life with Maurice became too difficult, when it stood in the way of a conventional country-squire life, he couldn’t sustain it.
Sirius: One thing I know for sure – I am glad for whom he ended up. What made me smile when I thought about Maurice and Alec is that their story is a story of Insta!Love, something I whine about when I see it in contemporary romances over and over again and at the same time it worked for me perfectly. I was convinced that they will work out, I understood that Maurice’s bitter loneliness of course contributed to him falling in love so fast, but I thought that at the end Alec showed himself to be a worthy candidate for his affections. Grade: A
Sunita: The romance with Alec requires us to read between the lines a lot, because it really is insta-love. But Alec does enough in his short scenes to give us the material we need to trust him, and we know Maurice so well at that point, and we’ve been on such a journey with him, that I was able to convince myself that it would work out. And Forster is such a good writer that small moments and actions were able to convey so much. Like you, I closed the book feeling happy for both of them.

Thank you for this thoughtful review! E.M. Forester is one of my favorite writers. The man created A Room With a View, A Passage to India and Howard’s End! I’ve seen every one of these movies and I read Howard’s End more than once. I had no idea he also wrote this book. I love the idea of returning to the same imagery and tone as say a Howard’s End, but with the twist of a m/m romance. I think reading this will give me a little more insight into the author’s personal life. And I’m happy to see that this book too, if filled with the class strife, inner turmoil, and humanity that I enjoyed in previous stories. Forester at his best. :)
I read the book because I watched the movie adaptation first, and I recommend both. It’s been a long time since I read the book, but I think the movie makes it quite clear that Clive just isn’t able to accept his relationship with Maurice and go against what is expected of him. (The movie is single-handedly responsible for my 25-year-long crush on Rupert Graves, BTW.)

I haven’t read this one, and it sounds great! I think that a lot of older and more classic literature actually do a really wonderful job of covering taboo subject matter, as well as giving meaningful explorations of the human experience. Thanks for a great review!
Love the book and the film. Remember seeing it for the first time in a very fresh 35mm print at a college film society screening. They’re both so well observed, the one verbally and the other visually.

I really enjoyed this review. I’ve never read this one, but I’m pretty sure I have a copy. And now I want to re-read all the other Forster on my shelves! It has been many years.
If Sirius hadn’t reviewed this with me, I doubt I would have reviewed it on my own. There are so many layers to this book, it’s impossible to feel like I’ve done it justice. But if it gets more people to pick it up, or even see the movie, I’ll be thrilled.
I have mixed feelings about the movie, although I think many readers of the book will enjoy it very much. It was definitely a forward-thinking film when it came out, and seeing all these lovely actors in the bloom of their youth is a treat (there are few bad Rupert Graves performances, in my opinion, but I have to take this chance to recommend Different for Girls, which I think Jayne reviewed here years ago). But the film misses the lot of the interiority of the book, understandably, and that for me is the best part. It may also be that the actors carry a lot of the responsibility of conveying the complexity of their characters, and they were all so young (and relatively inexperienced) then. Still, it’s a beautiful movie and if it messes with the book a bit, it’s nonetheless worth watching.
Great review! E.M. Forster is one of my favorite authors too — if one can say that without having ever read A Passage to India or managed to finish Howards End (which I’ve started multiple times — but just can’t get into). I read Maurice when I was eighteen or nineteen, around the time the movie came out. I liked it a whole lot, but not quite as much as A Room with a View or my (thus far) favorite Forster, Where Angels Fear to Tread. I agree with Sunita that it is a “lesser” work but still excellent! And along similar lines, for those interested in Forster’s early works, he also wrote two volumes of SFF short stories, The Celestial Omnibus and The Eternal Moment, that are very much worth reading, but little read.
I really enjoyed this review. I’ve read Howards End and A Room with a View but not Maurice. I’ve also always wanted to read A Passage to India but haven’t gotten around to it. I’ll look for Maurice on my next library visit.
I really have to reread A Passage to India. It kind of traumatized me when I read it in college for a colonial literature class, and the movie made me angry, so I’ve avoided both since then. But I think at this age and with a different perspective I would like it a lot more, especially now that I know more about his background and his homosexuality (needless to say, that was not brought up in the course).
Forster also wrote a book called The Longest Journey, which has a lot of autobiographical elements and which I really want to read. It’s in the public domain, I believe, so you should be able to get ebook versions at a site like manybooks.net and sideload the appropriate one.

@Sunita: I’ve had The Longest Journey in the TBR pile for years and was just thinking I should pull it out this year! I read that it was Forster’s personal favorite among all his books.
Re. the short stories — they are also “lesser” when compared to some of Forster’s great works, but are still quite good and IMO deserve to be more widely read. He wrote some of them as early as age 24. I find the speed with which he developed into a brilliant novelist dumbfounding,
It’s a loss to literature that he stopped writing because a book like Maurice was unwelcome in many quarters. His nonfiction book, Aspects of the Novel, is also terrific.
@Janine: I don’t think Forster stopped writing novels because the issues around publishing Maurice. He wrote erotic and gay-themed short stories after that, and of course A Passage to India was published in 1924. His turning away from longform fiction seems to have been complicated and not entirely understood even by him, although I haven’t read the biographies, so maybe there is more information about it in those. But I agree that it would have been lovely to have had more Forster novels.
@Sunita: I didn’t mean that it was related to publication issues, so much as to Forster’s feeling that he couldn’t write with honesty about homosexuality without suffering personal consequences. I could have that wrong, but I know I read that somewhere — maybe in a review of Wendy Moffatt’s biography of him? I also read (somewhere else perhaps) that his mother didn’t want him to publish anything gay-themed. Maurice and the shorter works you reference were only published posthumously.
