REVIEW: Price of Passion by Susan Napier

Dear Ms. Napier:

Book CoverThis is the second of your books I have read, and it was selected purely by what was available on Fictionwise. Luckily for me, Price of Passion was a winner, an entertaining and smart interpretation of the enduring Harlequin Presents equation of plucky but overset heroine + darkly passionate and misunderstood hero = operatic drama and fiery loving. I loved every overwrought page of it.

Kate Crawford has a secret, a growing concern, and she’s come to Oyster Beach to figure out what to do about it. The vacation property she has rented is right next door to famous author Drake Daniels, who has shared Kate’s bed and commanded her heart for the past two years. But Drake, itinerant and unsettled, both physically and emotionally, does not seem happy to see Kate. When Kate — accidentally on purpose — stops by Drake’s super-secret writing haven, casually inquiring about a spare cup of sugar, she proves an irresistible disruption to Drak, catalyzing an anger and lust-fueled game of cat and mouse, although who acts and cat and who acts as mouse changes over the course of the book.

Science Dooms the Secret Baby Trope

Gizmodo has an article about an over the counter DNA Paternity test. Each shiek, billionaire, and cowboy should have one of these next to his razors because you never know whether the baby your ex-girlfriend, wife, one time shag in the back of the Lear jet, presents five years later, may be yours.

REVIEW: Bought for Her Baby by Melanie Milburne

Dear Ms. Milburne:

037312694801mzzzzzzz.jpgIn an attempt to broaden my reading horizons, I’ve been trying out new category authors. And when I say new, I mean “new to me.” Generally, my rule is that I don’t read books that have “baby” in the title. High off my reading success with other HP authors, I disregarded this self imposed rule and bought this.

I actually read about the inspiration for this book on the harlequinpresents.com author site. You said that your inspiration was from an autobiography about a young woman who becomes hooked on heroine and what her family did to bring her back from the brink of destruction. In Bought for Her Baby, your heroine’s sister is that drug addict whose habit has gotten to the point where she sells herself for sex and resorts to stealing wallets and I presume, other stuff to feed her habit.

ABC Debuts October Road: Because There Is Never Enough Stories About Secret Babies

Long held to be a staple of romances (and not always a favored one), the secret baby formula makes the small screen in the form of October Road, a drama that will debut after Grey’s Anatomy, on ABC. I wonder what romance novel they ripped off. The promo showed the female left behind wanting to immediately kiss the guy who left her behind and pregnant. Always glad to see the stereotypes holding true to form.

REVIEW: Seducing Simon by Maya Banks

Dear Ms. Banks,

Seducing SimonYou know what made me buy this book? Some people had commented on how closely it paralleled Shiloh Walker’s My Best Friend’s Lover. I had to buy the book myself to see if those accusations were true. See how well controversy sells? Suffice to say that these two books were very dissimilar despite the same plot: Friends to lovers story with a deception overlay. Oh, and in the cover contest area SS wins marginally. What the hell is with huge pager/cell phone on the hero’s pants in MBFL? But then again, what the hell is the expression on the SS hero’s face? Her Best Friend's Lover

Toni (heroine), Matt (brother), AJ Spinelli and Simon Andrews all live at Matt and Toni’s house and have for several years (which is kind of weird in and of itself but at least it doesn’t feature the three men laying next to each other. IN BED. NAKED. like some other guys we know in romancelandia). Toni decides to move out because she can no longer disguise the strong feelings she has …
