August Bookstore Sales Are Up

The U.S. Census Bureau statistics are out for August bookstore sales with sales up 9.3% to 2.286 billion. estimates that those sales are still feeling the Potter effects since the “adult hardcover sales were down 21.3 percent for the month, bringing in $93.1 million, but the children’s/YA hardcovers were up 58.6 percent, with sales [...]



Amazon’s profits are down despite great fourth quarter earnings.

Amazon posted a 34% increase in quarterly sales (compare this to the decline in sales for both BGI and BN) but their profits were down 51%.
Increased sales of electronics, lower prices and discount shipping program Amazon Prime crimped profit margins, Szkutak said.

Disappointing Holiday Sales at the Chains

Publisher’s Lunch reported today that Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million had disappointing sales this holiday season with comparable sales down 0.1 percent for BN and 2.1 percent for BAM. BAM blamed the lack of a strong media tie in. Via Publisher’s Lunch.
