Even though publishing is facing dire economic times, it is still spending furiously for celeb books. Galley Cat points out that these rarely earn out for the publisher so why the overspending? Dan Stone, agent for many of these celeb authors, argues that publishers must know where the market is otherwise why spend the cash? I can’t remember the last celeb book I bought unless you call The Audacity of Hope a celeb book.

Lauren Conrad, socialite and reality TV star of The Hills, has signed a three book deal with HarperCollins. The trilogy will be about a reality TV star. Hmm. Self referential much? I don’t doubt that these books will be wildly successful. At least Conrad has a wealth of experience upon which to draw.
The real question is whether she will be writing these herself. Also, how many brand names will be included in the book? I’m going to go for 3 per page myself. Thanks Jana for the linkage.
Lynne Spears' had contracted to write a book to be published through Thomas Nelson, an inspirational publisher. The book was to be about parenting and when I originally heard the announcement, I laughed myself off my chair. Today, Lynn Spears’ fans will have some bad news. Given that her 16 year old daughter has announced her pregnancy, the impending parenting guidebook is being put on hold “indefinitely.”
What could she possibly say about parenting at this point that would not draw laughing and pointing? I could understand a celebrity biop about how she and her husband leveraged their daughters to stardom, but on raising your kids to what? Dress as provocatively in public as possible? Become a laughingstock before the age of 30? Treating your children like accessories? Do parents really need help on raising their kids to be Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears?
