I thought it might be fun to share with the readership the top ten lists of various readers, authors, and publishing professionals in the romance community. It’s a way for us to get to know each other’s reading tastes a little and find out about books we may have never read but should.

Today’s list comes from publicist Erin Galloway. Erin Galloway is a Publicist for Berkley/NAL at the Penguin Group. She received a Master of Science in Publishing from Pace University and has been a passionate romance fan for over a decade. She is a big fan of the paranormal fantasy romance subgenre and so her list is in that category. In no particular order:

Dark Magic by Christine Feehan

Warrior’s Prize by Georgina Gentry

Knight of a Trillion Stars by Dara Joy

Elizabeth’’s Wolf by Lora Leigh

Without Reservations by J. L. Langley

Lord of the Dark Sun by Stobie Piel

The Power of Two by Patti O’Shea

The Perfect Gentleman by Danice Allen

Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward

All Through the Night by Suzanne Brockmann

I’ve asked a few people to participate to prime the pump but I’ll need more to keep the feature running so please don’t be shy. Email me a top ten list at jane at dearauthor.com. Every Friday, I’ll post one of them.

Do you buy books as gifts? There’s something wonderful about sharing one’s love for reading with another, particularly kids. Here’s my last minute holiday book gift guide. Share yours!

Pre K to 1st grade: Nora Gaydos “Now I’m Reading” series. I like the collection of 10 books which help your child build her phonics skills. The books are to be read by the child and upon finishing the book, the child can place a sticker on the front. There are forty stickers, four for each book. The end of the book contains exercises to aid in reading comprehension such as questions about the content, rearranging sentences, and filling in the blanks.

I also love the Letter Bingo game by Gaydos. The kit contains four tab slide Bingo cards and an Alphabet spinner. It’s fun for adults to play with the kids.

Slightly Older Child: The books by Grace Lin are simply wonderful. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a take on a fantasy story where one girl goes on a journey to find the Old Man of the Moon to change her family’s fortune. The Year of the Rat and The Year of the Dog are two semi autobiographical books about a young girl named Grace and her middle school experiences being a Chinese American. The lessons that Grace learns about being confident in herself and being kind to others regardless of their appearance is one for kids of all races.

Teenage Girl: Forget the Twilight books. Not only have those girls probably already read those but there are really good stories out there that are more female positive. Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games and Chasing Fire as well as books by Justina Chen Headley or Sarah Dessen.

Adults: Last Night I Dreamed of Peace is the diary of a North Vietnamese female doctor, her encounters with enemy troops, and her dream of peace. Her diary was found by an American soldier who was charged with clean up. He read the diary and could not destroy it and instead violating military regulations, sent it to a friend. Thuy, the doctor, passionately believed in the North Vietnamese cause and has many an unkind thing to say against the American soldier, but it’s a poignant story about war and the cost that it inflicts on both sides. I’m not a big war book reader but I was captivated by this story.

If your friend likes fiction, I’ve been hearing awesome things about Stieg Larsson’s series starting with Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have this book set aside as part of my holiday reading.

Stay safe with your family!

All About Romance did a top 100 list a while back and in the early days of blogging, Jayne and I did a chart of how we felt about those books. It was a way for readers to see what our tastes are like and how divergent we are as readers. We decided, at the end of the decade, to do our own top 100 list.

This list, like any group endeavor, is the result of compromise and sacrifice. We all contributed a list of 30 books we thought were the “best”. The lists were then combined into one giant list of 154 books (there were some overlaps). We then voted on the books’ placement on the list but there were many, many, many ties. Is there a better way for us to have done this? Possibly but being bad at math, this is the best that I could come up with. The result is as follows. You can read each reviewers’ assessment of the books here.

Picking out the ten best reads of 2009 was hard. It was hard because I had 6 A rated books but then I had to delve into the B+s and determine from that strong group who ranked in my top 10. I based my decision on re-readability. I’ve re-read portions of all of these books at one point or another. There are other books which I loved this year that are outside the genre so I intentionally excluded them.

I noticed that I loved the scoundrel redeemed story which is pretty much the dominant theme in my best loved historicals of the year. I’ve read into the first quarter of 2010 and I have to say we romance readers have a good year ahead of us.

In 2009, I drifted away from reading the urban fantasies and paranormal romances that have been my bread and butter as a reviewer and ventured more into the young adult and manga genres. As a result, my list of top reads reflects that. None of them are romances but my fellow reviewers have putting forth some great recommendations from this year so I leave that to them. Instead I offer a short but different mix of books and manga that I enjoyed reading in 2009. You can read more of my reviews here.

We will be posting our Top 10 of 2009 this entire week. Today’s list is from Janet (aka Robin). The list is unranked. You can find more of her reviews here.

****

I hesitated about making a list this year, since my reading was largely dictated by what I volunteered to review. Consequently, there are many, many wonderful books I haven’t yet read and some books I did love that I didn’t put on this list, either because they were not straight Romance (Sinful Life of Lucy Burns, Dead and Gone), because they just didn’t stick with me with way other books did, or because I wanted to make room for a book that I think might be otherwise overlooked. So rather than my “Top Romances of 2009,” this list is more “10 Memorable Romances I Read in 2009″ — and they’re books I heartily recommend to the DA readership.

In the interests of full disclosure, Rowan Larke is a close friend. That said, however, A Love Neverending takes risks, plays with romance conventions, is generally beautifully written, and haunts me, so it belongs on my list of the Best of 2009, even if I can’t in all good conscience review it.

I was going to post about branding this morning, but in lieu of recent events, I thought it would be nice if we just shared what we are going to be reading this week or this month. It’s the holiday time for the US readers as Thanksgiving is this Thursday. I hope to be getting in some serious reading. Right now, I’m finishing up Her Bedroom Surrender by Trish Wylie and because the book is so much better than it’s title, I play to read Her One and Only Valentine after I’m done. Heck I might be done with both by the time I comment on this thread.

So for those who are looking for a book to read this week or in the upcoming weeks, will you share with us what you are currently reading (and should we be reading it too?)

This month, the recommendations shelf was quite bare. We actually considered not recommending any books but recognizing that Books on Board would give a small discount to ones that we did, we came up with the following short list.

Skin Game by Ava Gray (Ann Aguirre)

Someone reminded me that I enjoyed Skin Game by Ava Gray (Ann Aguirre). One of the hazards of reading books early is that sometimes you forget when they are coming out. Skin Game features two morally ambiguous characters who fall in love while evading the law, exacting revenge, and learning how to trust each other. The best part, in my opinion, is that these characters don’t become defanged when they do find their happy ever after.

Home for the Holidays by Sarah Mayberry

Joe Lawson has a thing for his new neighbor Hannah Napier. As a single dad, he shouldn’t be thinking what he is about her. Still, that doesn’t stop them from getting close. And the way she connects with his kids, it’s as if they’re a family. (I’m not a big fan of kids in books but this worked for me. Hannah is a prickly tomboy who is regaining her shattered confidence when fiance leaves her for prettier sister. Joe is working on coming to life again after the loss of his wife).

Christmas Angel for the Billionaire by Liz Fielding

Annie needs a break from being the “nation’s angel.” Her high-profile charity work means the media spotlight follows her every step. So leaving her aristocratic title behind her, Annie goes undercover.. and meets brooding businessman George Saxon. (This is Roman Holiday all over again without the reporter hero. It’s sweet but not treacly sweet.).

SEALed and Delivered by Jill Monroe

Kiss the first man you see. The Fate Delivery Cards were a silly impulse purchase. But thanks to one of the Cards, bed-and-breakfast owner Hailey Sutherland finds herself locked in a scorching kiss with super-hot, wet-suit-clad navy SEAL Nate Peterson. (These two actual date and you can see them fall in love. The courtship was important and made me believe that the two would be be able to withstand long separations).

Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh

Nalini Singh returns to the Psy/Changeling world and its “breathtaking blend of passion, adventure, and the paranormal” as a woman without a past becomes the pawn of a man who controls her future… (Recommended by Janine, Singh delivers another strong entry into her increasingly popular series).

Maybe you can recommend books to us this month.

(In the future, we’ll always try to post this on Tuesday so you can get the discount the day of the release).

Written on Your Skin by Meredith Duran (recommended by Jennie, Janet/Robin and Jan)

Hot Under Pressure by Kathleen O’Reilly (recommended by Smart Bitches, Jayne and Jane)

Mistletoe Mommy by Tanya Michaels (recommended by Jayne who also recommends forgetting what the title is because it has nothing to do with Mommy or Christmas)

One Week As Lovers by Victoria Dahl (recommended by Janet/Robin and no, I don’t know what it will take for Victoria Dahl to get an A here at Dear Author)

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare (recommended by Jane because I loved the immature, big hearted Lucy who had to have that fearless belief in life in order to bring about the brooding Jeremy).

Beloved Vampire by Joey Hill (recommended by Jane. The review will come at noon. Needless to say its a star crossed lover + vampire + love saves people story with a dark edge).

Since the Surrender by Julie Anne Long (recommended by Jane because even with the plot flaws and the WTFery sex scene, I still loved the characterizations).

Beyond the Rain by Jess Granger (this is a qualified rec by Jane. It was a very good SFR that was accessible but slow in some places. It’s a trade but if it were in mass market, it would be an unqualified rec. This one is not in ebook form and therefore not available under the discount).

Spider Touched by Jory Strong (I’m giving this the same qualified rec. The detail that Jory Strong has brought to her new alternative urban fantasy romance is amazing and I love that she uses the world to provide the basis of the conflict but it’s a trade).

It’s a month of good books so if you are looking something to take on the flight with you to RWA or to read on the sofa when you can grab a moment from the family or just something to relax and read, maybe our list will help.

Make Me Yours by Betina Krahn recommended by Jayne and Jane. Features a sexually knowledgeable female. A minx, if you will. It’s very fresh.

Bound by Your Touch by Meredith Duran recommended by Jane and Jennie F. It’s one of the few books to which Jane has a straight A. It’s a masterpiece of craft and romance.

What Happens in London by Julia Quinn recommended by Jane. One word ran through my mind when I read this and that is charming.

Branded by Fire by Nalini Singh recommended by Janine. The latest entry in Singh’s Psy/Changeling series pairs strong willed Mercy, a cat, with Riley, a wolf. They fight like cats and dogs and make love like there is no tomorrow.

Trace of Smoke by Rebecca Cantrell recommended by Jayne. This debut novel features a great heroine: “She’s supposedly powerless yet triumphs. She keeps most of her promises. She tries to do the right thing in the face of evil. She’s a heroine to respect and one I enjoyed meeting.”

Cowboy Comes Back by Jeannie Watt recommended by Jayne. Jayne reads far and wide within the category lines at Harlequin to find you gems like this.

Outcast by Joan Johnston recommended by Jane. This is a fast moving romance featuring a man broken by his traumatic past and the woman who is ready to sacrifice everything to save him.

I’m sorry for my delinquency in posting this. My lame is excuse is real world things interfering with my online fun. Without further ado, here is our May recommendations.

To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt. A beautiful courtesan falls in love with a scarred, tormented lord. Recommended by Jayne.
