If the drawing is still open, I too would love a paper copy (I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was little, so perhaps that’s why I don’t mind being a technological dinosaur).

For me – without question – the best debut book is Broken Wing by Judith James. It’s not only the best debut I’ve ever read, it holds the numero uno spot on my all time favourite of any book list.

I think it’s quite telling that a number of those books mentioned are not actually debut novels after all (The Spymaster’s Lady and Devil’s Bride, for instance). The ‘breakthrough novel’ is probably more important in establishing an author’s reputation. Sometimes, the debut novel is the breakthrough, but not always. And in those cases where it isn’t, the earlier novels are often best forgotten. I recently bought a re-released early Stephanie Laurens and it is truly dire.

Avon put together this really lovely giveaway to celebrate the start of the new Stephanie Laurens‘ series, The Black Cobra Quartet. The premise of the Black Cobra Quartet is that there is a British traitor who is the head of the Black Cobra cult, an organization that is terrorizing villages and setting up a reign of fear in Bombay. Evidence has been gathered to deliver to the England but given the scope of the Black Cobra influence, it is determined that the four British officers who have this information will split up and make their way back to England separately in hopes that at least one of them will be able to deliver the incriminating evidence and put a stop to the Black Cobra.

Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for November 2009

Welcome to the November Promotional Thread for Authors. What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of October would be a November release)
You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.

DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

A google bomb is really the only way to fulfill Scott Baio’s desire to regain his fame. If you aren’t helping, then you are standing in the way of a true American grain from finding his destiny.

Teachable Moment: Someone’s New Twitter Addiction Is Running Amok

For those in their 30s and 40s, Scott Baio is best remembered for playing Chachie, a wannabe punk, nephew of The Fonz. He was also Charles in Charge, a manny. Today’s generation might best remember him for a three year stint on VH-1 as a reality star and now for his Twitter addiction run amok.

He started tweeting about how his wife calls President Obama a “shitfuck” and other pretty rude things. Gwen Hayes, an aspiring romance author, decided to unfollow him. Charles got upset and compared Obama to Michael Vick (not seeing the connection here) and then when Gwen tried to respond, Chachie engaged in what we shall now call the “chach block” which is the Twitter equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying “I can’t hear you”.

Things have escalated to the point where Charles in Charge has taken his show about “being the grain” (yeah, I have no idea what that means) to the Glenn Beck radio show.

BAIO: I don’t know which is worse. But and somebody said on the Twitter, why am I going against the grain in terms of my beliefs. And I said, I thought I was the grain. I thought the things that I believed in were the things that this country stood for. And there’s very few things that I truly believe in and

GLENN: Hang on just a wait a minute. I’ve got to go back to that. Why would you go against the grain on what you believe in?

BAIO: No, no. They felt that what I believed was against the grain.

GLENN: Yeah, but what difference does the grain make if you believe in something?

BAIO: Well, I don’t know. And my argument was I thought I was the grain.

GLENN: You are.

I don’t suggest reading the transcript unless you are drunk or high because sober, it makes no sense.

Let me sum up this wtf-ery for you. Charles in Charge is upset that some random person on Twitter unfollowed him and then a few other random people on Twitter told him his actions were stupid. Chachie/Charles claims that his life is great and that he is very very rich and that others are pathetic for wanting to engage with him and then threatens that he will sue people like Hayes for … unfollowing him?

I think Charles needs to wind down. Play some golf. Read a romance. Here’s your teachable moment: If you are ever compared to acting like Charles in Charge, it’s time to take a break from the keyboard. Don’t be a chachbag.
