@DS: You're too funny! But I remember the beard bothering me, too. Sorry about the deputy/Sheriff confusion.

Really, it's not worth thinking about. :)

I downloaded the sample from Amazon to my Kindle. The bailiff is a deputy not the Sheriff. That makes sense. Unfortunately the sample ended before the judge made his appearance.

And I should be ashamed writing this-- but I checked and deputies in North Caroline aren't allowed full beards except those working undercover and having a medical exemption.

I'm going to go away now and try to stop thinking about this story.

Sheriff as bailiff seems wrong to me for a variety of reasons, even for the smallest of jurisdictions. At the very least, it makes me wonder who acts as bailiff if the sheriff has to testify in a criminal matter.

It's *a* judge and *a* prosecuting attorney. I'm not sure that they've ever worked together. But the bailiff/sheriff has worked with both the judge and the attorney and is having sex with the attorney.

I'm not sure about the legalities/precedent of the sheriff working as the bailiff. Seemed that it was part of his duties as sheriff to work as bailiff for the court?

Do I understand this right? The Judge and the Prosecuting attorney go on vacation together. The Sheriff is a part time bailiff? I know its North Carolina and all but this sounds very wrong-- especially the vacation part.
