Rumor: Amazon to Debut Larger Kindle on Wednesday

AllThingsD, an arm of the Wall Street Journal, headlined by Walt Mossberg, puts forward its opinion that the Wednesday news conference Amazon is holding at Pace University will feature the debut of a larger Kindle designed to target the newspaper reading crowd. The NYTimes is apparently partnering with Kindle on this device. The question I had is whether the Times will offer a subsidized Kindle in exchange for a higher subscription payment. There was an article that suggested printing the Times was more costly than sending every subscriber a Kindle.

Last week, Amazon announced it would increase the charge for converting documents sent to the Kindle from $.10 flat rate to $.15 per megabyte. A PDF can easily be 1 megabyte or larger.

Last fall, Times had approximately 10,000 Kindle subscribers.

  1. Hmmm which might be why they bought Stanza.
Converting and transferring to Kindle through that desktop app was free and easy. I wonder…
