I think this is going to end up being a very lopsided poll! :)
My answer is the same as yours, amazement. Then laughter.
If you’d asked would I rather visit my own parents, I probably would have voted that way.
Jane, LOVE the conversation! LOL And really, I have to agree with Val. Pretty lopsided poll. I have to admit though for me, I live within walking distance of my in-laws (hey, five miles is walking distance! really!) and love them to death. I’m one of the fortunate ones who has great in-laws. And they’d understand even if they didn’t live close why a book had to come first ;-)
Ummmmm….well, I see my mom every week at church. see the in-laws on Fridays because they watch the kids so the DH and I can go out for ‘grown up’ time aka date night.
So, gimme the books.
My inlaws live only about 5 miles from me so I think that the gas would pay for, what?, maybe a fifth of a new (paperback) romance? And I’m mostly a library reader with book expenditures of about $20 a month (including late fines - eeek!). Even with these realities and thinking hypothetically the answer is crystal clear. The books, they must come first. The teeny tiny amount of guilt I feel is mitigated by the knowledge that my husband would vote the same way if “romance novels” was replaced by “WWII pilot memoirs”.
Now, my parents live 400 miles away and the $100 in gas would buy an awful lot of books (and/or represents months’ worth of fines) so… I don’t know. Maybe my sisters and I could work something out, book swapping-wise, so that we could all visit and still have our HEAs.
That’s why God invented email. :D
I don’t have any in-laws so books are on their way!
Couples across Romancelandia are having this discussion. Gotta love a man’s priorities.
Yeah, duh!
I keep getting “please pick a valid poll response.” I guess it didn’t like my choice. LOL
If it was my own parents, I’d have said yes, because my mom has boxes of those things, and she cooks a mean meatball stew besides.
Maybe I shouldn’t have voted at all, since I’ve recently shed my in-laws along with my husband…
I couldn’t really pick in this one. My in-laws are thousands of miles away, in Scotland. We would LOVE to go and see them, but I haven’t spent enough on books this year to pay for even 1/4 of the “gas” (jet fuel) that a visit would take. I take people I love over books every time — I can always get books from the library — so I’d stop buying books if it would help us go see them, but it really wouldn’t.
I bought the new Julia Quinn book today, with my “educator’s discount” (save 25% this weekend only!) at Borders. Then I spent a whopping two bucks at the Friends of the Library used book sale — got seven books for that price, and this year managed not to accidentally buy back something that I donated. I’ll have to work out what fraction of a plane ticket to Scotland $9 is.
I voted for the in laws, because they are gone now, and I adored them… I would give just about anything to drive to see them… living of course. Books I still buy, but they don’t replace people… but that could be because I am getting old and there are more funerals than births these days in the family..
Not a difficult vote. I’m blessed with the sweetest mother-in-law in the galaxy and I can get my books for free as a blogging book reviewer.
I voted for the books. However, I must confess, I don’t have a MIL, so……. :-)
Write-in vote: Sony PRS-700.
