I’m both irritated and fascinated by the recent Kindle exclusives. Lyons Press has biographies of both Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama but are making them available only to Kindle readers. This irritates me because I don’t have a Kindle but am still an avid ebook reader and see little hassle for Lyons Press making the books available in multiple e formats.
I’m fascinated by the offering, though, because Lyons Press intends to publish in print, only the winning candidate’s wife’s book. I think that the idea of testing the market, so to speak, by offering an ebook first is a great idea and a business model that could generate more varied and cutting edge fiction if adopted by mainstream publishers.
