I’ve had the opportunity to purchase a gently used Kindle from a friend of mine but I’ve held off, thinking that there might be a new Kindle coming out in October. According to a report to the Times, though, Amazon says that there are no new Kindles slated for release in 2008.
Update to Add: I wanted to include a link to the Business Week article I had read (but misplaced the article until just now) that had “confirmations” of the new Kindle.
I can confirm what McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman is saying — that Amazon.com plans to unveil a larger-screen model of its Kindle e-book player, aimed at students, in the coming months. And I’m also hearing some details, similar to TechCrunch in July (my apologies to TechCrunch for the use of “Kindle 2.0” in this headline; I somehow missed this post that uses the same phrase while writing this post), about an upgrade of the base model, that I’m told is coming in September (though Wright Ragen thinks it may be in October). My sources say the new version is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances with the first version.
On the one hand, Amazon doesn’t want to be stuck with alot of old stock and with rumors swirling that a new, better model is coming, many people are waiting. I thought that Amazon’s credit card special might be one way to usher the old Kindles out the door. So is Amazon bluffing to Times or are these “sources” not in the know.

Fine with me. They look junky, anyway. I think I’m going to get a Sony Reader, now that they’re improved.
I am one of the people who is waiting for the upgrade. I’m spending my money instead on a iPod. But not for books. What I want (need!) from the Kindle is the ability to download manuscripts and make notes.
Thanks for the update. I’ve been quite tempted by the Kindle-ade, but decided to hold off until the rumored October update. I may hold off for a bit anyway… just in case.
Does any one know if they solved the problem with the battery? From what I read from some of the reviews there was a problem with the battery running low in the second to third month in use and some times not even charging.
