Elizabeth (both of you), I’m so jealous you got that interview. I love Hiassen, and his heros are exactly my kind of anger-driven monkeywrenching bad boy.

Actually, the opening scenes of Sick Puppy might be my favorite romantic setup ever. But that’s probably just because it was the first of his books I read.

@Lori: Hiassen has written a lot of non-standard romances into his novels, but this one has always been my favorite. I’ve read and re-read all of his books and, for some reason, I’ve always had the impression Stormy Weather is the most “romance-y.” But Stormy Weather was also the first Hiassen I ever read. Maybe Hiassen novels are like Cirque du Soleil–maybe your first one is always your favorite.

@Lizzy and Chicklet: Maybe I should have included the photo my Dad snapped of me interviewing Hiassen with this post, so everyone could judge the hotness quotient for themselves :) Or maybe not. I can’t speak for Mr. Hiassen, but I sure don’t want ten-year-old pictures of ME floating around the internet.

I saw Hiaassen at a signing for Kick Ass, a collection of his Miami Herald columns. (If you’ve ever wondered where his characters’ pro-environment, anti-tourist feelings come from, it’s all him.) Sadly, it appears the book is out of print; if you can find a copy, I recommend it highly.

And he is dang hot.

I haven’t read Hiassen in ages but I remember this book so clearly, as well as most I’ve read (including the YA books). He has an uncanny story telling ability with a wild sense of humor, a well honed gift for the absurd and a surprising romantic nature.

Many of his books include romance (if not all of them) and they’re certainly not standard but also not masculine POV with sweaty, entangled limbs and unentangled hearts.(Thinking of Lucky You and the unusual romance there).

I think it’s time for a reread.
