I met her first in Mark Kurlanksky’s Choice Cuts-”a miscellany of food writing” and after “on Monsieur Paul’s” was captivated.Nice to know there is still a lot of her work still waiting for me.

Sorry about the late response, everyone. Was away at RWA and didn’t check the blogs. Only after I got home my husband told me that my review was already up at DA.

I’m glad to see so many MFK Fisher fans here and equally glad that my review might garner her new fans. (She is no longer with us, but such exceptional writing should live on well beyond her.)

P.S. MB, I did look up her info while writing the review. You are right that she did not have an easy life, but what a resilient spirit she had.

She was an amazing writer! I think I have read all of her books and own several. Some of the scenes/word pictures/images her words made in my mind are permanently engraved. I think her writing has influenced and changed how I view food–and how I see the world.

That scene you mentioned about the train to Switzerland is one of the most chilling that I have ever read.

If you are interested, there is info out there about Chexbres health/death and MFK’s life. They were very interesting people, and life was hard for/on both of them. (Maybe try Wikipedia??)

I think that I have read just about everything that MFK Fisher has written. They are all good. Some better than others, but all worth reading.

I have given “The Art of Eating” to probably 30 different people; to me it defines “keeper”. Thank you for writing about Ms. Fisher and encouraging other readers to pick up her work; she was truly amazing.

I first read The Gastronomical Me when I was about 19. It was a gift given to me by the man that I would marry six years later, chosen because he knew I liked to read about food and he hoped it would inspire me to cook for him.

At 19 I didn’t really understand what I was reading, although I had the sense that I might come to someday. Now I am 39 and someday arrived about five years ago. It’s an astonishing book, one I plan to share with my daughter.
