Harlequin Launches Enhanced eBooks
By Jane • Jul 9th, 2008 • Category: Publishing News • •Starting with Nicola Cornick’s Unmasked, Harlequin is beginning to experiment with enhanced eBooks. According to the press release, “the ebook has been enriched with interactive buttons that hyperlink to Web sites containing photos, historical commentaries, illustrations, sound effects, maps, articles and more.”
This will definitely be interesting to look at. Obviously the drawback with these enhanced books is that you apparently need to be hooked into the internet and have to read with Adobe Digital Editions as that is the only format that Harlequin is currently offering. I’ve downloaded the book and will take a look at it.
Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.

Maybe they could work on “enhancing” their current ebooks so the readers who buy them can actually open them without much cursing, nightmarish software updates, tech forum surfing and the offering of sexual favors to Bill Gates.
Will the Spice ebooks have sound effects? (Yeah, I just giggled.)
What Shannon said. I go to Fictionwise to get my Harlequin fix because most of what I have downloaded from Harlequin’s site won’t work with my Mobipocket program. Part of the fun of ebooks, to me, is that I can buy something on a whim without having to leave the house. I love instant gratification! I get pretty testy when my instant gratification involves numerous emails that don’t resolve the problem and I’m out $6.
The idea is great, I just hope they get better software!
