I’ve never really had a problem sympathizing with damaged characters, so Lilith’s books have always worked well for me. I do agree the worldbuilding wasn’t as deep as it was in her Dante Valentine books, but her prose made up for.

But I got the impression–from what Jill stated–that she was trained to keep them quiet, and in the novel she mentions them making sounds when they’re reacting to magic.

It was really interesting reading a different point of view for a book that I read and enjoyed. Jia, you write a great review and you were correct that it might work for others. I liked Jill and will be looking for the sequel. I also have Marjorie M. Liu’s Iron Hunt on my list, so I hope I like it. I will look for your reviews on it.

You might have a different experience. Jill didn’t work for me as a narrator, but she could easily work for someone else.

By the way, is it just me or are there a lot of demon hunters/slayers going around lately?

You are correct. Those are the other two books I have to finish writing up reviews for. And despite their being all about demon hunters, they are very different from one another.

Bummer. I just bought this up a couple days ago and was hoping for some good things. I’ve only read as far as the Prelude- which did perk my interest. Unsympathetic main characters completely turn me off, though. Ugh.

By the way, is it just me or are there a lot of demon hunters/slayers going around lately? Night Shift, Larissa Ione’s Pleasure Unbound, Marjorie Liu’s The Iron Hunt . . . I’ve picked up all three. It’ll be interesting to see how their characters and books vary.
