I've never really had a problem sympathizing with damaged characters, so Lilith's books have always worked well for me. I do agree the worldbuilding wasn't as deep as it was in her Dante Valentine books, but her prose made up for.

But I got the impression--from what Jill stated--that she was trained to keep them quiet, and in the novel she mentions them making sounds when they're reacting to magic.

It was really interesting reading a different point of view for a book that I read and enjoyed. Jia, you write a great review and you were correct that it might work for others. I liked Jill and will be looking for the sequel. I also have Marjorie M. Liu's Iron Hunt on my list, so I hope I like it. I will look for your reviews on it.

You might have a different experience. Jill didn't work for me as a narrator, but she could easily work for someone else.

By the way, is it just me or are there a lot of demon hunters/slayers going around lately?

You are correct. Those are the other two books I have to finish writing up reviews for. And despite their being all about demon hunters, they are very different from one another.

Bummer. I just bought this up a couple days ago and was hoping for some good things. I've only read as far as the Prelude- which did perk my interest. Unsympathetic main characters completely turn me off, though. Ugh.

By the way, is it just me or are there a lot of demon hunters/slayers going around lately? Night Shift, Larissa Ione's Pleasure Unbound, Marjorie Liu's The Iron Hunt . . . I've picked up all three. It'll be interesting to see how their characters and books vary.
