Deals for the week of May 29th – June 4th

By Jane • Jun 4th, 2008 • Category: Publishing News • •

This week features…a whole lotta nothing. Everyone was at BEA, so the list is short.

Count me in!
N.K. Jemisin’s THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS, combining the politics of George R. R. Martin with the magic of Neil Gaiman, to Devi Pillai of Orbit, in a good deal, at auction, in a three-book deal, for publication in Fall 2009, by Lucienne Diver of The Knight Agency (World English).

Spice seems to be doing well.
BLONDE GEISHA author Jina Bacarr’s BLONDE SAMURAI, the erotic story of an American heiress who flees an abusive British husband only to be captured by a rebellious samurai who teaches her the way of the warrior, to Susan Pezzack-Swinwood at Harlequin Spice, by Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency.

More westerns being snapped up. Looks like if you have one sitting on a back burner, now might be the time to have your agent send it out.
Janette Kenny’s three historical romances set in the American West during the 1880’s, to Hilary Sares at Zebra, for publication in December 2009, by Jennifer Schober at Spencerhill Associates (world).

The heroine sounds weak and out of control of her own life. And this was marketed as YA…?
Dandi Daley Mackall’s MY BOYFRIENDS’ DOGS, in which the owner of three dogs, each left to her by a departing boyfriend, would prefer a man in her life, but can she learn from her uncertain relationships with guys to chose right the next time?, to Maureen Sullivan at Dutton, in a nice deal, by Elizabeth Frost-Knappman of New England Publishing Associates (World).

Have heard good things about this series.
NYT bestselling author Lisa McMann’s third and final installment in the series that began with WAKE, to Jennifer Klonsky at Simon Pulse, for publication in Spring 2010, by Michael Bourret at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management (World).

I think this sounds good, but at the same time, I wish there were a few more historicals that didn’t deal with Henry VIII and his wives, and perhaps some of the other lesser-known figures of such an interesting time in history.
Sarah Hoyt’s untitled novel about the beautiful, spirited and cunning Katherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, who plied love as a weapon better than most, but not well enough to survive court machinations, to Ginjer Buchanan at Berkley, in a nice deal, by Lucienne Diver of The Knight Agency.

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways. She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

  1. The politics of George R. R. Martin with the magic of Neil Gaiman? I… really want to see how that works, exactly. Could be interesting.

  2. Sarah Hoyt’s untitled novel about the beautiful, spirited and cunning Katherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, who plied love as a weapon better than most, but not well enough to survive court machinations,

Hmmm, I’ve always heard she was beautiful but stupid. More a gold-digger who landed the biggest fish in town then didn’t know how survive the experience.
