EFF Requests Congressional Hearing on Border Searches
By Jane • May 6th, 2008 • Category: Publishing News • •A few weeks ago the Ninth Circuit released an opinion that allowed searches of laptops (and presumably other devices) at the border. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) sent a letter on behalf of 40 civil liberties organizations to the Head of Homeland security requesting a hearing on searches of electronic devices.
As the commenters previously noted here at Dear Author, the border searches present confidentiality concerns for businesses. But it also presents a privacy concern. Congressional hearings rarely end up changing anything. After all, Big Oil had to head to Capital Hill in 2005 to face a Congressional hearing because the industry’s record profits. They were there again in April defending their record profits.
Thanks RebeccaJ.
Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!
